IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

What's the difference between drawing from a picture and drawing from real life

>> No.3050998

>>3050943
One is drawing from a picture, other is drawing from real life.

Or do you mean the psychological "artgains" difference? Some people say that drawing from life is more benefical since you can see the object in a true 3D environment (different angles etc.) but it doesn't matter if you have a decent grasp of visualizing 3D objects in your mind.

>> No.3051022

>>3050943
Drawing from real life: It is easier to understand perspective and form, and you don't see too many details so you are forced to draw values more. You also know where the light sources are and can control them.

Drawing from photos is only better for things that you can't find in real life, like exotic animals or insects, or very weird poses that a model can't hold for too long, and in general is more convenient because you don't have to move your ass from the chair.

Also, in real life you don't have a limited value range like in photos. Our eyes are the best cameras there are, so in real life you can see shades of value that gets lost in a camera or through editing.

>> No.3051025

>>3050943
A picture is 2D, reality is 3D, which you need to bring down to 2D so it fits on your 2D paper. With a picture you can much easier see how long something is, the ratios, the angles compared to another thing in the picture or the borders. In 3D you need to be able to measure that yourself.

Thanks for asking the question I was wondering about. I can't draw from the head myself but I think that's because I still don't know anatomy and lines are only now starting to appear where I want them to be. After modeling in 3D a high-resolution leg where I had to study the anatomy, I noticed that leg shapes now come naturally when practicing pose drawing.

I think the size of every part of the body with respect on each other it's decent, and the posture is all right, if that's what you wanted.

Yo can you tell me how you build up that grid? Like, the squares on top close to us need to be bigger and they get smaller as you get away.. I get that, but how do you measure it? How do you know where to divide them? The lines used to create them don't seem to be vanishing towards a point.. I swear I got to this point on the Loomis book and the moron just kept showing these grids and never explained how to make them and I ragequit his book.

You can't force inspiration into her. I like that drawing and with full practice on exercises and studies daily she would belong in the /draw/ thread in no-time. But if she thinks she's hopeless and she's NGMI then she is just NGMI. A lot of us here are busting our asses.. I personally can't afford to stop and think if I'm ever gonna "git gud" or not, if I stop and wonder I'll fall behind. I just practice practice practice, she should do the same. No one is putting a gun to her head, there's no point in sweating about being good or not.

The Bean: are these exaggerated, if so how much? They seem to work as caricatures which is good practice, but remember that the head is approx. 5 eyes wide as a basic rule of thumb. Deviance from this rule in the top-right head makes it look as if the left eye is asymmetric and deformed.

You don't need to study loomis per se, but you don't to acquire your fundamentals. Obviously, you can learn fundamentals from other resources like krenz, hampton, bridgeman, etc.

2 hours a day is an OK amount. That's about 700 hours a year. I imagine getting good would take anywhere from 2-5,000 hours. 10k if you're trying to become the cream of the crop. It also depends what you do with those 2 hours and your level of talent. Realistically, it would take you about 4 years unless you're talented.

Beginners are supposed to focus on drawing well realistically, right? No one debates that. You're supposed to git gud before stylizing.

But you're also told to study pieces from artists that inspire you. What if an artist that inspires me draws stylized. Will it be productive at all to copy it?

I am a wagecuck working irregular hours and don't have the time or energy to invest, however, I do want to get good. I know loomis is one of the many things I need to study, but how do I do it ? Is around 20-30 minutes a day good enough to get good at this ?
I know I am being unreasonable, but I do not want to be an artist, just want to get good at drawing whatever comes to my mind . It all seems too much , does a casual needs to study that much.

I don't understand these questions; you can do both. If you want to draw in a stylized way you can learn both the fundamentals and the stylization at the same time. That's what I did when I was an art major (spoiler alert: colossal waste of fucking money, don't do it) I focused on the fundies in class and for projects, but half my sketchbook was fun shit from artists I liked. The more fundies I got under my belt the better my stylized works looked and the better my stylization got the more aesthetically pleasing my art projects became. The fundies teach you how to construct the skeleton of a piece and the fun stylization teaches you how to present it in an interesting way.

The eyes, and surrounding eye areas, seem just a bit flat. And the curvature of his forehead seems to flatten on the right (would be his left side). Also the glow/reflection from the far sides of his face next to the ear seems to carry into the ear, particularly around the lobes, maybe just trim that down a bit.

I like the colouring on the lower half of his face, but if you were going for pure realism, it's a bit too much contrast between midface and chin area, even if he had stubble, and the bubblegum lower lip makes it just a bit too much.

Yeah, now the chest is a bit small I'd suggest not focusing on the arm for this one just render the head and shoulder.

But keep the lesson in mind because you constructed poorly everything needs fixing and it over shadows the neat head you did pretty well.

Next time draw the shoulder a bit bigger and rememebr that your hand is practically the length of your head. Like put your hand over your face. If you're drawing a bust it could still benefit you to draw the full figure to make sure your proportions are sound.

I'm having issues with my tablet and I don't know what to google to resolve them. Posted in /v/ drawthread but I figure this is the better place to be asking because I wanna get better at digital art and I'm not a certified drawfag yet.

My issue is that when I pick up my stylus from drawing a line, and then put it back in the exact same spot, the cursor on my screen moves downward and to the right, sometimes as far as 4 to 5 inches. So I skate the cursor back into place and it's alright, until I lift up the stylus again. Then it happens again. I used to be able to move the stylus up towards a corner of my monitor, then lift up when it doesn't move the cursor any farther, then reapply and go some more and continue the line. Now if I do that, the second time I put it down, it puts me in the middle of my canvas. I updated my drivers to the latest possible today so I don't think that'd be it.

I'm using Krita and my tablet is a Wacom Bamboo CTL 470 if that matters.

It's kick tits! So you moved the light source to bottom left, made ears and eye anatomically correct and deepened the background to make the image pop more. And changed the skull to be more oblong which is basically more anitomically correct.

That's bullshit though, the difference in distance from the sun is usually way too small to have any effect. A bulding will be just as bright as the car below, unless the building is like thousands of kilometers tall, and even then its brightness wil be more affected by the lack of atmosphere compared to the car below. With other sources, like lamps and such, yeah, the distance matters. Even the moon recieves pretty much the same amount of light per square unit no matter where it is on its orbit.

This is like my 2nd time digital painting. I used a reference and every now and then I used the eyedropper to get the feel for what color I should use. I am somewhat satisfied with capturing the general likeness, but still don't understand how to pick colours and such. I think I can remove the painterly brushstrokes by overlaying lightly?

Probably gonna start reading some color theory books and watch a couple of tutorials of people digitally painting.

One of the first exercises from a recommended book is to do a self portrait from a mirror and it's just painfully impossible to do as a beginner, and looking at some of the authors students supposedly doing it shows them shadowing in stuff, knowing how to do perspective and whatnot
Feels like the sticky is aimed more at advanced beginners

First of all, don't try and draw a fucking tree using the color palette from Miami Vice, dumb neonposter. Get some regular-ass pencils to sketch with. Second, draw bigger; get bigger paper if you need to. Third; DRAW WHAT YOU SEE. Study the FUCK out of that tree; get in there and check if the bark is smooth or gritty, if the leaves are long or fat, which branches are larger or thicker. Step the fuck back, where's your light source? Where's the shade focused? Which branches bend towards/away from you? Can you make out individual leaves from here or do they all mush together into a single tone you can draw a shape around?

Don't worry if you lines aren't exactly where you want them; there are no lines in real life to begin with and you're not trying to draw a fucking masterwork anyway. You're getting a feel for what the tree is, and how you're representing it. Take what you learned from Draw a Box - don't forget to make long, confident strokes just because you're now using a pencil. How's your perspective, do further branches LOOK further?

Draw that tree again; take a good thirty minutes to an hour. Spend at least half of that actually looking at what you're studying. And at the end of your study your drawing will probably still suck, but you will have learned something in the process

Stop using this neon shit, it looks terrible. The guy from drawabox already told you not to do this. You can do it for fun, but on actual exercises, try pen/pencil and paper. You don't even look like you tried. The reason why this is is because you don't _know_ how to draw trees yet, you don't know how to structure them. Wait till you get to that part of the lessons.
