IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

It did need more light but you lost some of the contrast.

The inconsistency was more to do with the lighting. It's not clear which direction it's coming from. The right cheek is lighter than the left cheek. The left has rim light but doesn't show on the nose or anywhere else. The nose is in shadow and side plane is too dark. The right eye should be in shadow but is highlighted. Basically lighting is all over the place.

Are you trying to draw them exactly as you see them? Are you drawing different ones? Some of these look normal, some look fat, some look shorter. That;s an extremely bad habit. Your drawing surface should be well lit. My drafting table, where I draw the most, has two swing arm lights with 75K bulbs in them - that's bare minimum to me, they should be 100K, but the lamps aren't rated for that high.

>> No.3038419

>>3038338
That's pretty good anon! A little rough but fine altogether. I'd say you're passing through symbol drawing now. Did you feel like this exercise helped you?

Next, if you're goal is to learn to draw faces from imagination, you'll first need to draw a bunch from reference. Pick one gender at a time and do a series of them. In between, go watch study sessions from Vilppu or Proko about how to draw the different parts of the face such as eyes, nose, mouth. So draw your faces, insert some feature studies in between, then at the end draw some faces from imagination. Keep repeating this and you'll start to internalize the process and you'll be able to draw heads no problem.

If you haven't yet, you should do form/light studies. If you understand how light works and how it applies to form, it will save you time from having to guess where shadows and highlights go. You can just look at a face, figure out its light source, and know how the shadows, midtones, and highlights will look.

Keep up the good work and keep posting so you can get feedback.

I used to do cloth studies a lot so I at least have the slightest clue about how light works, but obviously not enough so I'll do more. Thanks for all the advice and the specific study I should try. It definitely helped, it made me realize that an eye is nothing but squishiness surrounding a ball, that the almond shape is just the squishiness. If you draw it on small piece of paper you should simplify shading, so that it enforces form and light and shadow areas.
But it'd be best for you to just get a bigger page and get more detail in single drawing.
Figure drawing classes usually use B2 format or bigger.
>>3038455
You can use reflections and highlights to show that something is metallic.
For slimy things also add translucency and for fur add random lines in shadow areas.
You should pick a photo and study from it or see how other artist draw them.

My parents just gifted me a Wacom Intuos Art since they noticed I've been practicing lately.
Thing is, it feels awful to draw on, my lines aren't nearly as firm as they should be and it's also very small.
Do I just return it or do I keep trying to get used to it?

>> No.3039167

In the end your parents gifted you the tablet because they want to see you happy and succeed. If you feel like the gift was not really what you wanted after all, I would just make this known. Make sure they know you appreciate the gesture and exchange the gift for perhaps a bigger size version. It's not like it's a handmade product, so I don't think there will be much emotional attachment by them to the gift itself.

I mean don't get me wrong, I really apreciated it, but I don't think the quality of the tablet itself is that great, so I considered returning it and saving money to buy a better one. Seems like small tablets can cause a lot of wrist pain, not to mention the tablet itself doesn't feel very accurate. I was mostly trying to see if anyone here knew about this specific model and if it was good enough for a first tablet.

>>3039168
My computer screen you mean? if so it's the usual 1080p, the tablet is also the smallest model apparently, it really doesn't feel comfortable no matter what I try, but I was hoping that is just me not being used to digital drawing, the lines are all wobbly but I can draw just fine on paper.

>> No.3039179

>>3039172
yea, maybe get a bigger model, the small model is bad if your screen is 1080p, especially if its like 21-23 inches. It's just too small. I'd recommend getting the wacom art medium, wacom one medium, or huion 1060 plus. The wacom art medium is good, but it's 200 dollars.

your shading looks pretty decent honestly, your anatomy is wack though. dude on the right has huge fucking eyes, nose look smushed in like a pancake, jaw is kinda crooked.

Also don't be afraid to use just straight black lines to convey when one shape ends and another begins. I see this most around the ears, where the ear connects back to the head. your drawing looks like the ear just kinda morphs into the cheek because you did some fine shading from cheek to ear. just draw a dark line between cheek/ear to let the viewers know they are two seperate shapes.

Also, this is kind of a more advanced idea, but sometimes it's better to use shadow to bring attention to the light. For example, people will often shade in the ears or neck because that brings more attention to the face

>splint
Cock-up splints are great to wear at night, but you gotta wear them all the time for the first month or so. One with metal in it will last you a lifetime as long as you keep it clean.

Otherwise, my wrist healed up mostly from physical therapy. They slowly worked out scar tissue and massaged my forearm, then had me do stretches there and at home ( I do them without thinking throughout the day. As I'm driving, while I'm standing around, waiting for food in the microwave, before a fap, after a fap, etc etc). Apart from that, get some light weights (1 or 2 lbs) and do some simple wrist curls to build a little muscle just for support. Also don't forget supination exercises (get a hammer and rotate it as if you're hammering something sideways without moving your arm, just your wrist.)

>>3039538
If your finger tips are getting numb, do some finger stretches. Aka, make the asl hand shape for E, then extend your fingers and repeat like 10 times.

Get some good vitamins in you, B6 and B12 definitely help. Any sort of vitamin that helps joint flexibility. Take frequent breaks, but don't go on /ic/ during your break otherwise it'll take you out of the session.

This is coming from a guy who draws, paints, plays guitar, drums, piano, and bike-riding. CTS got me down for the first two months or so, but after that everything became habitual and the change in lifestyle actually helped tremendously.

When I was doing the redline, I was solely basing it off of what I was looking at. Just bear in mind that I literally had no idea you were working from reference, lol. That was my mistake.

HOWEVER, I still have some good critique. First off, your eyes are slightly too far apart, but they are at the correct angle. The right brow needs to come down in order to match the eye-line. Or, actually, raising the left eyebrow might match the reference better.
Next, her cheekbone is way sharper and higher than the one you have. And look how much you rounded the far side of the face. In the ref, you could simplify that into one graceful line. Her nose it pointing a totally different direction than what you painted. Take a look, the bridge of her nose makes a nice tangent with the far wing. It creates this cool little curve underneath the nose. Actually looking closer, there's this super cool S curve underneath the nose that wraps around the mouth barrel, then fades as it curls around the closer nostril. Just be sure to check the angle that her nose is descending in comparison to yours. In your painting, you have made sure to include the entirety of both nostrils, but in doing so flattened the nose and created the illusion it was going somewhere else.
Your mouth is way too small and at the incorrect angle. And her chin in the ref is actually quite large desu. The lips don't curve away from the face in your painting as they should in the reference. I'm not going to bother with the hand, but just know it's wrong and tiny.

Overall, the eye angle is good, but everything else seems to be angled as her head was level with the ground. It's not, and I'd suggest constructing noses and mouths from ref/imagination at many angles.

Don't just draw to say you did it, analyze your drawings, spot your mistakes and weaknesses and go from there.

I used to just draw shit using references and post on social media to fish for compliments and honestly I did not improve much for years.

I still can't draw from imagination or properly use construction to make a decent drawing, but in the last few months I can see and feel my improvement, sometimes just because I decided to draw 10 boxes a day for a month.

Trying to get better with gesture. Stuff still feels too stiff. One thing I struggle with is where to start from when sketching, I try and start from major curves such as the first guy's back (has a long curve from his leg to his hand.)

I also struggle with depicting weight I feel, making them look off.

Any feedback is much appreciated.

Holy shit. It's just a front-on view. The head is literally like a rectangle. Can you guys seriously not draw a rectangle with a centerline at the same angle she's tilting her head?
Are you guys really struggling this hard to match angles too? Are you guys incapable of literally lifting the wacom pen and comparing angles right in front of you? It's literally all there. You just have to measure and be super analytical for the first few times to really understand the relationship between features and forms of the face.

I've done a few projects after that but now I want to get back to basics, but this time on paper because I've been told that good skills on paper transfer to great skills digitally. Also accurately measuring angles and proportions is not hard. A lot of beginners just don't use it because either they aren't patient enough or they just don't understand how it works.

All I'm saying is that if beginners can learn this skill easily, you will improve much faster than if you're slowing drawing spheres and loomis heads.
Not knocking on loomis, but being able to closely examine a person's face and to recognize certain relationships between features, in order to represent that specific person on paper, is just as important as everything else.

If you aren't utilizing this fundamental skill, then it will take you much longer to improve. I'm not even joking.

Really study certain forms on the human body. Practice drawing, say, the isolated form of the deltoid from many different perspectives.
Secondly understand how perspective affects forms. Things get visually smaller, but they aren't actually smaller in reality. Things also begin to overlap when foreshortened.

Thirdly understand you don't have to draw every single muscular form. Know that things get visually overlapped and thus creates a new silhouette in comparison to the silhouette of that same thing in a more basic view. Aka you don't have to draw every single feature/muscle

trying to get better at rendering (and making better use of hard vs soft edges as well as color)

i tried to get the hard, shiny, 'iridescent look of the beetle from the ref ('ocala deep digger beetle' on google) i especially need help with that around the highlight areas on the thorax. there seem to be so many minor changes in hue to keep track of.

also, tips for improving workflow? as in, proper steps for rendering? rn i fill in dark colors and improvise from there but that doesn't feel efficient

Retarded question that i'll probably get bullied for:

Why is the side that the light would be touching be darker? Surely the other side of the disk thing would be darker as it's sunk inwards and hidden from the light? That little triangle with the arrows that he drawed is this light source.

that only happens because of linework, as the concentric circles get closer together it looks like a thicker, darker line. in a rendered piece that wouldn't happen.

u should also consider that black-and-white lineart often sacrifices accurate shading for clarity with regards to edges.
