IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

You're referencing ctrl+paint and that's a bad exercise since you're not aiming at any specific ellipse so you get no feedback if you drew it correctly or not. Exercises like drawing ellipses between two lines or points are better since you get immediate feedback if you failed and you can correct your movements.

Building incorrect muscle memory will hurt you worse than having no practice at all.

You gotta get out of symbol drawing and become able to properly represent forms in order to produce (and understand) cuteness reliably.

Figure studies are obviously best for that, but a form is a form, stylized or not. It's not impossible to improve while drawing stylized, but there's a lot of traps and pitfalls that trick you into thinking you've "got it" when you haven't.

Try drawing the same face from 3/4. Feel free to look at how other artists do it, and post results here.

The proportions seem fine.

Next step is to get rid of symbol drawing. Work those forms, give your limbs top, front and side planes. Do some perspective exercises to commit the fundamentals to mind (bottom plane of a shape visible above horizon, top plane visible below horizon, etc.)

Nothing wrong with dressing up your characters but if you wanna git gud you'll have an easier time to practice drawing them naked, in the long run.

>> No.3004043

>>3004012
It's not bad, but I feel like too much of an accent on "lines" rather than forms - basically the problem of seemingly every beginner.

For example, you've outlined the nose, or the ear. Bags and wrinkles under the eyes, some wrinkles on the brow and above the nose. A very pronounced nasolabial crease. These are all just lines, rather than proper representation of volumes.

You're not quite symbol drawing, there's some 3d construction. The head has a top and side plane, and the features of the face are consistent and respect that alignment. But your forms are a bit shaky, and I feel like you're not doing a good job of representing them. The ear is basically a symbol - it's a pretty complex structure to nail down, mind you, but I don't see any attempt at putting forms in it, it's just a bunch of 2d outlines.

My recommendation would be to work on two things in conjunction - learning more in-depth facial anatomy, with a heavy focus on volumes and planes of the face, and practicing drawing these volumes (and maybe shading, if you want.)

Good anime art is constructed over an understanding of body and face anatomy, shapes and volumes, perspective, basically all the things that are important in traditional drawing. For example, techniques to stylize the eyes or mouth are based on understanding the much more complex and complete elements of those features. Even knowing where to place the simple "dot" nose of moe requires an understanding of form and perspective.

Of course, you can just rely on formulas, but if you don't understand them they'll only look good under certain angles, and you'll struggle a lot in adjusting them (because you won't know what makes it "click"). The fact you can still achieve somewhat decent results without understanding why is the pitfall (because that path is very inefficient and limiting.)

The study trees. They have unique overall forms, how they grow, how big their leaves are, and will be shaped differently if they're in a forest, and if they're alone in the middle of a field. You can draw the overall shape, and imply the leaves as an overall shape, or you can render the leaves as actual objects that have their own shape and lighting.

Trees are plants. They grow according to the rules of nature, and their own nature. An oak tree will look vastly different than a willow tree, it's up to you as the artist to render that.

Hint - leaves are not scribbles.

But now I'm all sad and wish I never did that thing.

I have been drawing for a while to call me competent and I think that inflated my ego. I now know better to not feel to high and grand on my skills.

I have been drawing for a year and a half, fairly young in my drawing career/hobby/etc, so criticism and people pointing out my mistakes should get easier over time.

I spastically draw a couple of scripples on the page without any though going into them. Then I use those lines as the gesture drawing and draw a human on top of it. You can get some crazy poses out of it.

Eh, draw figures along the way if you want to. Some people act like you can only grind basic shapes until you master perspective, but I think it's important to also throw subjects that interest you into the mix while studying. As long as you're paying attention and pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone you're still learning.

Do forms, try to apply them to figures, do forms again, reattempt figures and see how you've improved from last time, etc. Feels more dynamic and engaging than just boxes in space for all eternity until you "level up."

I have very explicit instructions and specifics, which I've heard some artists prefer and some dislike entirely - so I'm wondering if there is a type of artist who specializes in manga and can take my really bad sketches and redo them in proper style and where the faces don't look hilarious and the hands arent circles and hot dogs.

Getting back to drawing, doing the lines/ghosting/circles/cubes etc. I used to draw a lot when I was younger, but gave up years ago because I was a little shit (people said I was depressed, I guess?).

I don't know if I should just say fuck it to years of fucking around with no basics and no real growth and try and start from scratch or if I should try and pick up.

Pic related, literally the newest/shittiest thing I could find (~6 years old).

it depends. there is actually a technique to get canvas's to look like its old a cracked, pretty much whatever you want it to look like. in digital you can usually just set a textured canvas to paint on, depending on the program you use. or you could just add a filter. theres alot of ways to make it seem like you painted on real canvas.

Practice. You're probably pressing too hard on the pencil, too.

Here's the assignments we did in beginning drawing in college (I had to take it, ugh.):

Draw a box 10" wide, one inch tall. Fill the box with a smooth gradation from 0% to 100%, with smooth transitions the whole way. Minimize the pencil strikes with even pencil pressure and even coverage.

Do this for every weight pencil, from 2h to 2b (2h, 1h, f, hb, 1b, 2b)

Next, draw ten boxes, in a line, same size, spacing should be equal. Using one weight of pencil, like HB, fill each box, going from 0%, to 100%. Stroke evenly to fill the entire box, no gaps. You have the gradations from the first exercise to judge the values.

You should not see any shininess from lead in any of the examples, that means you pressed too hard, or built up too much lead.

Once you get HB done, move onto another weight, like 2h. Do the common weights from 2h to 2b.

When you're done with that, draw a 3d scene, with simple shapes, like cubes, on a plane, with one light source. Use the values you've just learned to light the cubes, plane, and environment/background. Use solid blocks of value, no transitions/gradations.

Then, do one with gradations of value.

Final exercise, get an egg, put it on a white piece of paper, and a string light source, and draw the egg, and shade it. Use gradations of lead. Bonus credit if you do the egg using pointilism or crosshatching.

This was the first couple of weeks. We learned to control our pencils, and how to gauge/control values.

Why does anyone need/deserve blame. You asked for opinions, you got them.

They don't have to match.

Here's the thing - all my teachers said, "if you can't hang your art on the wall and defend every inch of it, you have no business being an artist."

If someone gives a negative critique, listen to what they're saying, look at your work to see if there's any truth there. You can learn from that.

If someone says it looks great, listen to what they like. That will clue you in on what other people see. You can learn from that.

You don't have to agree with a critique. But you should be able to defend your art, instead of placing blame. You're doing it wrong, you're not learning, you're shifting the responsibility for your art onto other people. Own your art.

Here's the biggest flaw:

You stage everything tightly to a grid - everything is either straight on from the front, 90's to the side, or straight on from the back.

ANGLES. They're your friend. They add drama and interest.

Get off the grid. Start studying movies and how they frame things, especially Hitchcock. His movies are a class in framing for suspense and mood.

>> No.3005421

By looking at both, and learning how to measure and compare distances and proportions visually.

A legit method of starting something is to grid it - cover the source with an even grid, then blow up that grid onto your paper lightly, so you can erase it, and use that to capture the overall shape and proportions and measurements.

And, if any of the tryhards here say it's cheating, it's not - Michelangelo and DaVinci used this exact method to blow up their fresco designs onto the walls and ceilings, by gridding small work onto large stitched together sheets of paper, called cartoons (that's where the word comes from). They'd poke holes in the lines, and use charcoal blown or rubbed through the holes onto the walls.

You did well identifying a lot of the colors. In the future, do not use a black background, it's just going to overpower whatever you're doing. Also, do not use black to paint, use dark values of the colors, that's what there, your mind expects black, because of the cliche of "black is shadows".

Try to find something with a neutral background, like an earthtone that's not the same as anything in the still life, like a blue, or violet, or a 50% grey.

Learn the structures of the neck, and how they connect to the chest, shoulders and back, and the skull. Everyone thinks a neck is a tube, when it's a collection of tubes, muscles and tendons, with the spine in the back.

One thing you learn in anatomy is where the origin of muscles and tendons are. By knowing where they start on the chest, along the collarbones and such will give you an instinctive idea of where to put your lines. Feel your own neck, where are the masses. How do they change, according to position? Where do they start, and end. How does an adam's apple for men?

This is why we study anatomy, so when we don't have a model or reference, we can approximate where muscle and tissue masses are, and how they are shaped in different positions.

So I just attempted the upside down Igor exercise. This is literally my first time drawing anything since I was a child and I have never had any sort of artistic talent. But this morning I woke up and decided that I needed to learn a new skill and get my brain working and moving in new ways.

I thought I did a decent job on his body and clothes and chair, though my angles and sizes are way off. When I got down to his head I was running out of room so just kind of winged it and it turned out a little rough.

Anyway even though it isn't a masterpiece, in a strange way I am very proud of it because I made a first step into learning how to art. I knew I needed to share this with you /ic/, because you are the only people who could possibly appreciate it.

Please provide constructive feedback, thank you.

You're not looking at what's there, you're drawing what you think is there. LOOK CLOSER. You have the angles of her limbs all wrong. You have her right leg completely wrong, and failed to draw the actual shapes that are right there in front of you - not only did you get the knee and calves wrong, you didn't even capture the contours. You have her hand against her breast, but havent drawn how her hand is changing the shape of her breast. Her hand is on her hip, pushing in on the skin, and you've completely missed that. Your shading is competely irrelevant and just hides the flaws in the form. The head is too small, and her face is a cartoon.

The forms are right there, and lit to be easy to be seen, for drawing, and you missed all of it. Her left arm, from her wrist to the elbow has a distinct shape, and you drew a noodle. Her right foot is flat on the floor, and you have it at an angle.

This is classic beginner's mistakes. You're not paying attention to the form, the contour, and the measurements and angles and proportions of the figure.

Try it again, and don't scribble on it as "shading". Draw the form. Study it. Measure it. Draw what is actually there, not what you think is there. Capture the contour, and the lines. PAY ATTENTION. This is one of the better sources I've seen used here, and you can learn a lot from it if you pay attention and THINK while you're drawing.

Also, if you're going to use construction, erase them afterwards.
