Has anyone on /ic/ been to FZD? Is the experience really difficult, yet rewarding? Are the teachers engaging? Do they always favor their favorite students? Are people in FZD secluded, or are they open to meet new people? Is FZD generally worth it?

If you're from outside Singapore. No. IT cost like £35,000 just for ONE year. You do 16 hour days. You will need about another £10,000 for living for that year. So with food about £50,000.

Thats basicallyl a deposit for a house. It's pointless, you might aswell just teach yourself, plus they don't teach you any of the tricks he shows in his videos, he just keeps going on about the fundamentals. It's pathetic.

>> No.3004649

>>3004624

Sticky in /beg/inner thread is one that was updated. But yeah, generally when people think "fundamentals", they mean knowing perspective up to third point, laying down values properly to show the form and to use Loomis/Robertson/whatever type of construction. Some fucks add to the fundamentals anatomy, gesture and color theory/color interactions.

If you watched every FZD video you should know that Feng chooses students portfolios based on the ideas that they have and ofc some level of skill that they already posses. He relies on heavy grind, some are mockingly saying that his course is based around Robertson book (which isn't entire truth), but honestly, it's mostly it. A lot of "high-school" tier art can be improved tremendously by sticking religiously to heavy constructon in proper perspective.

I'd be better if I didn't waste time on the internet. :( Only draw ~3 hours a day T_T Trying to get it up now my husband is in bootcamp though. Tips on how to quit /ic/ for good?

But I make a living out of it. I think this is awesome for one year of improvement. Also, I did my first $450 gig during the first term break. Namely, the amateurish looking mammoth thing in the middle. So that's after just 3 months. Before FZD, my record commission was $20.

There's such thing as "help yourself first and others will come in and help you more". I uploaded the files in the first place because someone asked me per email and kept them up for a few weeks. Hi, thanks for coming back. Draw through so basically if I was to draw a chair, redraw it but imagine im behind it? Or actually turn it around and draw it then. I'm guessing the latter because I saw something in an FZD video once one of the early ones he put up.

I've been practicing but I lose heart sometimes specially with figures, I'm definitely more comfortable with hard surface

One major question I want to ask is, did he show you any quick ways of learning perspective? Any tips or tricks of the trade or is really just practise?

>>3007413
Thanks for the kind words.
You're probably looking at Design Sketching? That one gets worse over the course of the term because I spent a lot of time in the beginning, then fell behind at one point and started rushing it. And I knew nothing about design, as you can tell by the later weeks when we're actually coming up with designs.

Not the same as school deadlines, but you could try logging your time. Pic related, blue marks is when time spent drawing.

Can you get clients to create deadlines? Even if it's cheap work.

When I realized I wasn't good enough to get hired in-house, I started learning about self discipline and mindfulness 'n stuff. Went from 9 hours of drawing a week to 20, lots further to go :)

Ridiculous story before I go. I'm building a library habit, and at first I hired someone for $15 to just wait for me at the library at 10:00. So I would actually get up and go to the library. Right now I just buy myself a coke when I get there. Went 5 times this week! Only for an hour each time, but it's progress! :D

Also, I like the app Freedom. It blocks your internet.

I really want to get to your level now, I know I have the potential I just need to apply! DEfinitely an inspiration and probably one of the best threads I've ever seen in my 30 years of life.

Oh that brings me to one other thing what were the age ranges? One of my biggest fears is that I'm too old. Currently I'm coming up to 35. But i have a rich history of sci-fi stuff I grew up with 80's and 90's media and loved books and alll sorts growing up so I have a crazy imagination, but the age thing always puts me off because I think some fresh 18 years old tight skinned youthful spunky cadet will outshine me.

When you draw the vehicles and planes in perspective, is there like a set perspective to learn as a template? I've seen Feng in his videos very quickly rough out a template before drawing a vehicle in perspective, like 2-3 lines.

The teachers tell you how to do it. Term 1 was a lot of 100% referencing to learn the drawing techniques. Design came later.

They love extensive use of reference, but some designs (like certain buildings) are copyrighted, so that's no-no.

Feel free to reorganize, redistribute or make new notes and derivatives.

My generic advice, after mastering the sticky stuff, add in draw-through. (>>3007417)

Draw-through is great because:

1. When doing a study, you have to figure out what it looks like in the angle you are using, so you are forced to UNDERSTAND what you are drawing.

2. If you have to draw something for the very first time, you can just use a reference and draw-through. Tadaaaaam, it's magic.

Obviously I still don’t know how to get an in-house job or how to get to master-painter level. Draw-through is just great to go from beginner to low-tier professional.

Hi! I already thanked you for everything in previous thread, but I just wanted to do it again- THANK YOU! I really wanted to go to FZD, but I could never afford it, so I just grabbed books by Scott Robertson, and I grinded it on my own. It took me a while, but I finally get to do some low pay comissions. THB I keep doing them to keep me drawing as I work full time fixing computers and I couldn't force myself to draw after 12- 16 hours of work in the first place, that actually made me completely stop practicing for like 2 months before I started doing comissions.

If you don't mind answering a few more questions:

1 One Anon already asked about visual library- I was also wondering if you have any tips on that

2 More personal question- can you draw with a fixed opacity brush the way Feng does? I was trying so hard to do that, but I just cannot. I use opacity jitter all the time when rendering.

>> No.3008141

>>3008089
Sorry, few more:

3 I noticed Feng tends to use some badass pose references for his character designs. Do you have your favourite source of pose references?

Also I wanted to share a trick I came up with. If you want to use half to black rule, you can simply use local value on bottom layer, then add a "pattern" layer where you would put your decals on mechs etc, and then on top of that you put an overlay layer set to 50% opacity. That way black color will turn everything below that layer to half to black, and white will do half to white. You can then add color layer on top of that if you want to turn b/w into color. Also you can change everything below that overlay layer and half to black rendering you already did will work.

>> No.3008143

>>3008141
Me once again, to make it a little bit more clear- 100 (white) is fully lighted surface (perpendicular to the light source) while 0 (black) means half to black shadow. 75 grey is 45 degrees etc. You can use greyscale slider as % of how strongly it is lighted.

Eh, I don't completely grasp designing yet, so not a streamlined answer. It's like trying to give an answer to "any tips for fundamentals?” when I just started. This is mostly parroting the FZD teachers:

The little details like bolts do indeed come from studying, that's why we did so much sketching. Feng critiqued my term01 homework as having too little reffed detail, but at the time that was the max of my skill.

- shape design: push it until you break it, then dial back 10% (I'm still learning shape design myself)

- Ground your designs. If you think about games like Assassin's Creed, they are 80% based on the real world. It's tremendously difficult to make up an in-depth history and culture on the fly.

- relevant to previous point, there's a lot of crazy stuff in the real world that's not well-known. Just use it. Check these plants my aunt posted on Facebook. They'd fit right into an alien-world design. I don't do this even though I should, because I got sold on the idea that everything has to be new and made up. It's a mental hurdle that I need to get over.

- I thought there was a Design Cinema about designing shortcuts, but I can't find it right now. Like, take something and make it huge (think about how many giant trees pop up in games and movies and books), reskin (mech that is actually a spider body with armor plating), taking the real world but changing one thing (Ancient Egypt has space travel), ... Maybe it was a Feng presentation somewhere else.

- Entertainment touch. Say, you got a rhino. In a video game his horn will be a lot bigger and pointier. Or whatever. He will be the real thing, but cooler.

- In entertainment design, everything has to be visual. Your aircraft got a special radar? Needs some blinking visual to show it's working. Also, functionality. Always be able to explain WHY you made a design decision (like my beetle cab design is completely based on applying the evolution of pigs and horses to potato bugs).

>More personal question- can you draw with a fixed opacity brush the way Feng does?
Yup. You'll just have to force yourself to do it. It's good to throw yourself into discomfort because you'll focus more. For example, the Alchemy cover I painted on a single layer because I was starting to become dependant on using layers.

I like the head design on your dragon. It's memorable.

>Also, I did my first $450 gig during the first term break. Namely, the amateurish looking mammoth thing in the middle. So that's after just 3 months. Before FZD, my record commission was $20.
what's the difference in getting a 20$ vs a 420$ gig? how do you go from one to the other?

Concept Design Academy for older folks anon. I've been stalking Uncomfortable on reddit (drawabox guy) and he said that there were people in their thirties at CDA, and who come out and make enough money for . Also check out CG master academy for online pro instruction.

I worry about the age thing too, though I'm at that fresh 18 year old side of the range. Always was afraid of those prodigious kids who started earlier with actual teachers and not just self learning. Keep drawing with all your effort is all I can tell you, and myself...

Maybe I'm just autistic, but my visual library is from just studying lots of real life and being observant. Its like bookmarks for reference.

How do you set up a perspective grid like that in digital art?
Like no rulers and shit.
How do you do it?

I work fulltime (with lots of overtime), and I force myself to do 35$ comisions (3 sketches, then client chooses ne tat I refine and then do orthos). That forces me to practice. I never let my mood control me. I am not an artist, I manufacture cool designs.

YEa well unless that full time job is stacking shelves it's easy to come home and do some art. but if youre a supermarket/retail faget like me you are literally shattered by the time you come home, and after eating and resting up a bit your body aching from being standing up all day you are literally tired to draw

I used to work as waiter. terrible job, couldn't draw shit after my shift. Right now I work totally different job, and whenever I end my shift after usual 8 hours I am good to go on drawing. But for like 6 months I worked like 14- 16 hours a day on average. Last winter I had to sleep at work because it didn't make any sence to commute 1h one way back home. I know your pain. Keep that shit goin, Anon.

I was there. What did it for me was to switch to half time job (as a waiter, so you get tips on top of hour salary). That way you have enough time to grind foundamentals.be ready to be hungry, I ate rice with canned tuna and soya sauce for like a year and a half. after that you can get low pay commisions like I did, that pushes you to keep drawing. also drawing itself is more fun because you can actually draw a lil bit better.

For PSA, guys, limit your porn consumption to 3 times a week. Not 3 days a week, 3 times a week.

You can jack off 20 times every day and the only thing to worry about is keratinisation. But consuming porn a bit too often will affect your brain.

is the 3 times a week the limit for masturbation then? or the porn?

No limit on masturbation.

Masturbation does affect your hormone levels (source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/135817)), but no negative or positive correlations have been found yet (with the exceptions of orgasms improving sperm quality).

For porn consumptions, negative correlations have been found with depression, addictions, loneliness, unemployement, domestic violence, etc .

Causal effects haven't been proven. In my personal opinion, the unemployment correlation probably is unemployment leading to more porn consumption since you have so much extra time, but I think it's the porn consumption that causes increase in partner abuse. For erectile dysfunction there's strong indications that it's caused by increased porn consumption ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5039517/ ).

The "three times a week" I got from a study that showed that men's sexual preferences changed when watching porn more than three times a week but were not affected by three times a week or less. Can't find that study right now.

I actually use the rule of three times a week for lots of stuff in my life. If I can't cut back something leisurely, whatever it is, to three times a week, the substance is controlling me instead of me being in control. At the moment I fail to reduce my sugar consumption and my 4chan visits to less than daily.
