You can tell someone's been studying Loomis by how stiff their drawings are.

Obviously your interest is in anatomy. This is not an anatomy drawing. It's manga. It's meant to be drawn quick so you can tell a story. Also those leg proportions are very appealing to me for some reason. (It gives her a tiny round butt.)

You'd have a point if the drawing on the left wasn't superior in spite of its anatomical inaccuracies.

Your drawing lacks all of the femininity, cuteness and charm of the original. While truer to life, the more precisely drawn anatomy is completely contrary to the mood of the drawing.

Toriyama stylized her anatomy that way for a reason. He draws his girls pudgy and dumpy to emphasize their softness and make them appear more childlike and thus more innocent and attractive (Japs gonna Jap).

Basically you missed the point entirely. Not just the point of this particular drawing but of drawing in general. As Vilppu said, there are NO RULES ONLY TOOLS. The ultimate purpose of drawing is to create something worthwhile, and all of the technical knowledge and skill only exists to serve what is being created.

In short, you're a faggot who needs to get off /ic/ and actually make something.

the japanese have a different way of creating images than the european/italian way. because they used to have ukiyo-e etc. the form has symbolic rather than realistic value. it's just another way of communicating information with an image. different languages for different cultures. the rules of composition and flow that the japanese apply to their drawings are just as difficult to achieve as realism. art is just lines and color on a 2d medium. people have found different techniques in making lines and color on a 2d medium appealing to the eye and saying one is better than the other when both require mastery and study is like saying the english alphabet is "better" at communicating meaning than asian alphabets or something. it's just a different way of seeing it. you close your eyes when you are exposed to forms of thinking and ways of doing other than the one that has been dictated to you. it restricts your freedom in making things because you will only ever stick to one way that has been dictated to you instead of creating yours by studying different teachers. you follow a defined set of rules and cannot get out of it because you are insecure about your art and do not see any value in it so you believe that if you have managed to adhere to a specific set of rules your art will have more value. but it won't, and your drawing looks really bad.

That's precisely how art works.
Deconstruct, analyze and understand the process.
Looking for mistakes and fixing them is literally the only way to get good at anything.

You can make things feminine, cute and soft without butchering your anatomy or using repulsive sausage shapes. See some of Glen Keane's work, or hell, even Vilppu himself. The thing is that unlike Toriyama, Keane got good at interpreting the real life before he delved into heavy stylization.

Good taste.

Asymmetrical shapes on human body are created by active and passive muscle groups working against one another. A symmetrical form is stiff, because it's literally stiff - both muscles are either flexed or relaxed. I assume this is the same for men, women, apes and everything that has muscles on it.
I guess I should've added fat pads to her hips, although hiding some of the anatomy, it would have sold the idea better.

And oddly yes, I do plan on teaching figure drawing classes. My biggest influence is Hampton, but Vilppu and his "feeling of the form" makes your head go poof! once it starts to click.

>Asymmetrical shapes on human body are created by active and passive muscle groups...

Man, you're spewing out words like you're just now learning about anatomy.

It's a design, not an illustration. When you tell a story it doesn't matter if all the anatomy is correct. Mignola even talked about it at a panel. It's just distracting when you tell a story.

Toriyama is a good character designer, he can do a convincing character with few brush strokes. Deal with it.

I agree that he is not an ideal for drawing women though which is the point of the thread.

Also, if you keep studying Vilppu, you'll end up drawing with Vilppu's style. You'll end up with how HE sees the human body, not your own vision of it. If you end up teaching, you'll teach Vilppu's technique, not yours.

First of all, you're possibly the biggest dunning kruger I've seen in a while. Did you actually think your redling was better than toriyamas original drawing? I'm not saying toriyamas original drawing wasn't flawed but your redlining if anything made it worse. You worsened the shape design and appeal, you screwed up the proportions of the figure by making the torso too small, you can't draw a proper clavicle to save your life, you don't understand how to properly construct a pelvis, I could go on and on but i'll just leave it there.

You're clearly a beginner level artist, unless you don't want to embarrass yourself again, don't redline artists who are leagues ahead of you.

Holy shit did you mess that one up. The original gesture of the inner leg is an "S" curve, not 2 "C" curves, there is no mistake there. The form is great and gives a sense of softness/ squishiness that makes her thighs seem thicc and juicy. In your version her legs looks like dried meat. No gesture, weak form and don't get me started on the leg to torso connection and those akward proportions.

80s/90s Toriyama illustrations are absolutely based and Dr. Slump and early Dragonball are fine works for their respective audience. While not being a fine artist, Toriyama has/ had a destinctive and pleasant style, while you have massive dunning kruger and don't know how to properly stylize. If you think Toriyama didn't study the fundamentals of figure drawing you couldn't be more wrong.

The blue lines are structural, not gestural, but that's not the point -

The car is nice, I like it. And yes, if it was drawn with bad perspective, I'd redline it too. How does that not make sense to you?
Do you people just trash anyone who questions your manga idols for the sake of it, or do you think about the criticism for a second? Guess what, everyone makes mistakes, Kim Jung Gi, Vilppu, every manga artist ever, even fucking Michelangelo. Nobody's work is a slice of their soul that you put on a piedestal and shield from opinions of others. Are you guys even trying to improve? Geez.

>> No.2960020

>>2960002
>The blue lines are structural
Are you this dense? Do you really think Toriyama lacks the underlying fundamentals? It's good to question stuff, but you're comparing apples with pears.
It's not that great artists don't do mistakes, but you should really think twice if you want to redline them when it's so apparent that you lack not only in drawing fundamentals, but in an understanding of what drawing fundamentals are.

You seem to be really proud that you did your figure drawing 101. And there is nothing wrong with that. How about you help out people who actually need it instead of making yourself a fool? I have a hard time taking someone serious who thinks it's a good idea to pay more emphasises on anatomical correctness than gesture and appealing forms.
And even then - heck your drawing is not only unappealing and stiff but just as stylized as the original. You know what quads are, congratulations.

Don't get me wrong, it's great that you analyze and study, but you seem and act fucking arrogant, while not having the skills to back you up. Not even closely. What you did wasn't trying to deconstruct a drawing, but shitting on it by your dumb doge meme and then getting defensive when others point out your drawing is shit. You're Nosebro tier at best.

I really don't want to enter yet another sterile argument on /ic/ but all you novices posting and trying to correct artists that have established themselves a long time ago really fail to understand the most basic thing about art. Wanting to improve doesn't mean you need to look at a great artist's work and try to fix the flaws. Sure you're not forced to pretend you like someone's work, but you're an idiot if you think you can judge art like mathematics. The best thing you can do if you actually want to improve as an artist is to be humble and always look for something new to learn from other artists.

and yeah, in this specific case, your redline is just bad. Not only do you lose everything about the softness of the original drawing by focusing on the muscular and bony aspect and completely ignoring the fat and connective tissues, but you also made some pretty blatant anatomical mistakes. It wouldn't be as big of a deal in my opinion if it was an original drawing rather than pretending to fix someone else's work.
