Prefer imagination, but ofc i won't say no to ref if i'm having some issue
Still, i never 100% copy from a reference, or at least i never had so far

Imagination. I just think it's more fun and liberating.
I still use references if I don't know what a thing looks like, if I need the finished result to actually look acceptable, or for practice.

>> No.2936532

Imagination, but I use refs to make the drawings more correct and lifelike. Example, you draw a hand from imagination, it can be pretty nice but there are so many small imperfections you can't do from imagination, in this case I use refs or from life.

If you're not using imagination when using a reference you're using references wrong.

>> No.2936674

I prefer drawing from ref and then modify shit with imagination.

However my goal is to be able to quit using refs altogether while maintaining solid anatomy and all that.

>> No.2936796

>people think these are seperate tasks
There is nothing at all wrong with using ref to see what something looks like, in fact it's purely beneficial, the problem comes when you are reliant on ref, and aren't capable of posing or design ffrom imagination

Sorry bud it doesn't work like that. If you're not actively drawing from imagination and applying, you aren't creating neural pathways.
I've seen several other forum members who have said the same thing and only do studies. Their imagination work never improves because of it.

This

Drawing from imagination while using ref is the key

>> No.2936934

I sketch my drawings from imagination, then maybe look at some refs to fix mistakes.

I also look at ref for stuff I'm unfamiliar with, like a specific piece of clothing, machine, building, etc.

ref, Im p close to a human photocopier and in the past the guarantee of a good looking ref study over imaginary exercises that could fail appealed to me, now Im paying for it
