ITT one-off quotes (from books or people you'very known) that changed how you drew things forever

>Accuracy isn't just about knowing how to draw what you have to draw, but also knowing what NOT TO draw that you may subconsciously think you have to
>Struggling to fit something into perspective that wouldn't even be visible from the angle of the picture is a far bigger and more common obstacle than just not knowing what looks like what from an angle

>Don’t just copy from life and photos. Rebuild the object in your mind. Refine it, digest it. It may not be accurate, but it just has to appear accurate. Create your own version

The entire manga is about what a fuck up the artist/author is (the girl he's talking to). It's a great read tbqph.

Think 3D. Just had this eureka moment a few weeks ago, I realized that you have to really feel the 3D-ness of whatever it is you're drawing. Pretend that those lines are actually receding from you, out of the paper. This is the key to creating depth and volume in your drawings.

So basically youre looking for magic words to transform you into an artist instead of just practicing?

I like hearing people's stories and lessons. It's interesting as fuck to hear the different ways that people have come to the same understandings on their journeys. All the advice is only as good as the application, though.

>"Drawing is just measuring."
>Alla Prima by Richard Schmid
I can't find the page to get the exact quote, but I remember reading that and thinking it was a pretty cheeky thing for a painter to say. I thought about it more and realized he's mostly right. Most of the work is just measuring accurately.

For life drawing/photo drawing, yeah, you just measure and draw clean lines. Then you render. That's all drawing is, easy shit. Drawing from imagination, though, you're going to need other skills. Perspective, being good at eyeballing proportions, construction, etc. I'm not sure why people don't make this distinction more often. Life/photo drawing and imagination drawing are significantly different. Knowledge of the fundies is useful for classical drawing, but far from necessary. If you're good at measuring, seeing lines and noticing proportional relationships in the subject like I am, you're bwsically there already, all you need are rendering skills.

>The pace of learning of any given subject, after the initial rapid advancement, seems to move upwards in ever shortening steps, while the time between those steps seems to stretch out longer and longer until we begin to wonder if there is any movement at all.

It might not be super revelatory or inspirational, but it always keeps me grounded when I'm feeling like I'm not making progress.
