First off, tracing backgrounds and using reference books doesn't count as "cheating," and it doesn't matter if a lot of Asian artists do that to speed up the work process. As long as the finished product looks somewhat presentable (and otherwise original) to the consumer normies, all is well amd good, regardless of the method. I'm not going to use these methods for porn specifically (maybe in the future), but thanks for the vehemently delivered advice :P

They're not nearly the same. Comiket is a madman's paradise of fanwork, where your average convention over here is both
A. Not nearly as large
2. Has not nearly as many artists
III. Doesn't generally feature fanworks of the same type or quality in the artists alley, usually it's just prints. Comicket features everything from comics to music to full fledged indie fangames. Western companies are a lot more aggressive about copyrights when it comes to fanworks that aren't just fanart.
