Cool, rendering is way way better. Design is improved in some ways, but oddly in other ways I feel you made things more generic on some parts. For example for the knight, the original had a nicer breastplate shape, and I think the fat space marine legs worked well on it as it's something a bit different and helps keep the design in that nice slightly stylized place, whereas the new one the legs are just like off a generic existing old armour. Personally I preferred the studded straps hanging from the waist too, but maybe if you made the gold strands on the new one more interesting and graphic is could work equally well. Even the gauntlets before were nice to have that mix of leather and metal, and makes him seem more like a functional brutish guy instead of a fancy knight in expensive armouur. The new gauntlets are fine but again seem to be just taken from some existing old boring armour. Otherwise on that one things like the helmet and pauldrons and sword are better.

For the girl at the end, I know they are two very different characters, but again I can't help but feel you were doing more interesting design in the first one. The second is ultra generic bikini babe. First one is nice in that it's a woman wearing some interesting shapes and that isn't showing off her body like in every other fantasy design. She also seems to be a skilled fender which is a more interesting design that a massive oversized sword.

The Marine at the top obviously is improved in every way. I think it could maybe use some simplification of the values and lighting (better organization) as it's a bit muddy at the moment, but overall it's pretty cool.

Out of curiosity, when were the ones on the left done, and the ones on the right?

>> No.2914282

>>2913916
I'll just talk about the middle one cause the other two were a request and a commission so I didn't really design them.

Basically the shift was because I wanted to have a more practical armor design that could actually function, so a lot of the overall design is pulled from plate armor ref, and then I mixed in some designs from Roman legionaiires like the overlapping pauldrons and skirt.

I'm fairly OK with it being kinda generic since he's just supposed to be a baseline infantry guy

First column was 4 or 5 years ago, but I'd say most of my progress has happened in the past year

Last summer I started doing some photo studies, mostly portraits. I painted like 3 20 minute portraits and then an hour long environment or portrait. It taught me how to really look at an image and break it down into how I could paint it. Once I learned, I could just start rendering whatever I wanted using ref, and doing that enough leads me to being able to do it from imagination. I still look at a lot of ref if I'm unsure of what I'm rendering.

Before last summer I didn't really do any studies at all and kinda just drew and painted until I thought it looked right, which more often than not wasn't right.

I actually don't practice as much as I should, spend maybe an average of 15 hours a week? Hard to say because some days I don't draw at all and some days I'll draw most of the day.

I've been casually doing #1 and #2. I guess I should put more effort in #1 from now on. My real life studies are no problem, I just prefer not to post them on /ic/.
My only problem at the moment is #3.

Whenever someone's around, I drop whatever I do on the spot and pretend to act like a normie. I think that takes up a lot of my time which could've been used for gitting gud, especially since I always forget to continue whatever I was doing until the next day comes. Or probably because I'm just a lazy fuck. I guess I'll do as you say and put some more effort into learning.
Thanks anyways.

I do sketch from imagination when relaxing, but I know that imagination drawing is just muscle memory, everything I can do from imagination is because I've drawn it a gorillion times from life or image reference. Another time I use it is when putting ideas down quickly, too.

>became a photocopier
It's my first year painting and doing studies is a really fast way to get used to new instruments and techniques, no regrets, they've helped me a lot.

I hope no one falls into this sort of trap, if you want to stop drawing in circles and stop wasting years of your life, learn how things work in real life then do studies, they help you put the things you dream up onto canvas.

>What is that?

Design an image with ONE strong focal point with at least one figure or animal that tells a visual story. Include 50 different recognizable objects in your illustration.

1. You may not count items that are attached to the interior or exterior of a structure such as flooring, lighting, cabinets, signage, roofing, windows, shelving, fencing, trees, etc. If you need tools to take it out of a room, out of the ground, off of a building you can’t count it.

2. You may repeat objects like candy canes or heart boxes but only count one of them in your 50.

3. You may not count parts of an object, i.e. a cupcake has 3 parts: cup, cake, and icing but you may only count it as one object. A person is only one object - you can’t count each article of clothing they are wearing...however if they are carrying something in a pocket, on their shoulder, or in their arms you can count it.

4. In order to be counted your audience must be able to identify each of your 50 objects.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vX-J5ADXdc

Do complex illustration. You have skills, but usually use pretty simplistic backgrounds and composition or none at all.

I think doing this would help you challenge yourself because you kinda look like you stagnate.
