I know a lot of artists use Pinterest for reference and inspiration, as do I. But they been fucking around with the UI and now you can't view other users likes. This sucks because a lot of artists I followed had normie boards and then used their likes for references so I was able to see their inspiration, but now it redirects to their main page. Anyone know how I can stop it from redirecting? I just wanna save some stuff before Pinterest nukes the feature altogether.

Ok, how do I indicate chainmail with pen and ink without making it look too busy.
I've been trying so hard to figure it out. Study after study, I just can't get it the way that looks good and non distracting.

Any artists come to mind that I could look at for some master studies? I'm trying to avoid the generic cross hatch look. But I can't seem to make anything other than a scribbly mess of shit.

I've been trying and failing to do the same thing for a while.

You might want to flip through this book, you can find it on CGPeers I think, probably the art book thread too. It's mostly pen illustrations of arms and armor.

A lot of the chainmain stuff is pretty intricate still, though. I don't really know an effective way to abstract it.

How do you jump from mediocre to good? Sometimes it feels you are so close, yet so far.

>> No.2912766

>>2912761

I think it's just mileage. Jumping from bad to mediocre is a lot quicker and better defined than mediocre to good, and I think it's also a lot more subjective.

By the time you're mediocre you probably know your fundies but haven't mastered them, so getting good is a matter of refining. The big trap for mediocre artists, I think, is the comfort zone. Avoiding refining fundies they're not comfortable with and focusing too much on what they're already better at. It makes their end product unbalanced, because one or two flawed fundies will make it look bad even if, say, the rendering is good.

That said I'm in your boat, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

How much time do you actually spend looking at your own art? Discounting drawing. That means actually looking at it without a pen in your hand or any way to mess with it whatsoever.

I think that the majority of artists just get sick of looking at the same thing for many hours and then never look at their own piece again.

I-m asking this because I was forced to look at my art for some time without being psychically able to draw or erase stuff. And the kind of ideas that popped into my head were different from the kind that I get while drawing. Then I think about how oil paints had COULDN'T work because they had to wait for the oil to dry, therefore they were forced to stare at an unfinished painting unable to do anything. Maybe this actually helps creativity?

And then this fag

Says that tools control our thoughts and not the reverse. Surely if you were holding a flamethrower RIGHT NOW your ideas would be different than your regular self right?

I'm going through Keys and doing daily portraits, but I can't seem to get rid of symbol drawing when it comes to eyes and lips.

Should I really try hard on getting it right through observation alone or should I look up tutorials on how to draw eyes/lips?

I fear if I look up those tutorials, I'll reinforce symbol drawing.

Thoughts?

>> No.2912953

>>2912934
I'm having a lot of trouble too but I'm getting through it by drawing them from different angles because a lot of the symbol drawing thing (at least for me) is due to the fact that I only think about them in 2D and forcing me to look at them in other angles starts hammering the fact that eyes are 3D objects.

Eyelids are pretty fun to draw. Also never forget that eyes are spheres and eyelids wrap around.

>> No.2912964

Do you just draw them or do any construction before getting the more minute details right? I feel construction would help me, and it's what I'd try to get through tutorials.

Alright so after hours of scouring, I asked a friend of mine who has read the Berserk manga if there was any chainmail. Since the art is pretty detailed, I thought it might be a good shot. My friend was able to find this one instance that I feel is the best way to represent chainmail without being overbearing.

What's nice is you can get highlights, midtones, and darks all the while using simple c strokes. Make sure you go AROUND(Rows) the form and not WITH(Columns) the form, though, otherwise you'll lose the illusion of chainmail.
Though, the outline seemed a bit simple for my tastes, so I added slight bumps to the outline at each row.

I'm trying to include what is practical into my decision making. I can bring Nintendo with me to play onsite or while I am commuting. I can't really bring all my markers with me. I would have to do Switch bring up tonight and how portable it is.

does anybody have that infographic talking about the importance of value in indicating form?

it had a black bg and showed 4 donuts, like this:

good color, good value | good color, bad value
bad color, good value | bad color, bad value

and the point was that even with bad/messy color as long as the value was good it still looked 3d

If by burnt out you mean "I can't draw anymore as I am burnt out", then go outside and enjoy life for a day or two. Go and do something, experience something. Art is partially your view and experience of the world distilled into art itself.

If you don't experience life to some extent your art may come out nice, but it won't have that injection of life. So go out for a walk, or go ride your bike for a while. Get some fresh air and take your mind of off things.

what's a good guide for formally measuring in 3-point perspective?

i want to know if there's any video lecture-type material where someone's going through the steps of setting up 3-point grids and using that compositionally.

something similar to erik olson's material on 1 and 2-point. it seems like he'll be putting out 3-point lectures eventually, but not for a while.

i read through most of handprint's guides, and while they were informative, the measurements of distance using trigonometry and all the other dense information give me a headache.

Why do you need to "formally measure" whatever it is you are drawing? Why not just trace a CAD model? Or better yet, why draw it at all?

The point of drawing something by hand is that it is quick, not that it is accurate. You don't use pencils and pens if you want something to be accurate. We don't live in the 19th century anymore. You can just use CAD. Use the right tool for the job otherwise you're just wasting everyone's time.

So guys, i'm working as a colorist on a 40 page comic that is about to be published. thing is I'm also better than the ink artist so I was asked to redo some faces here and there, really easy shit since the original inking was horrendous, told him i would for 1k more which he agreed to, so i'm being paid 5.5k for about a month worth of work which is not bad.

What I wanted to know is, do artists working on the comic usually ask for a sale percentage or just take the work's worth of money ? He just asked me if I would agree to take a percentage of the sales for some more modifications.

what percentage should I ask for if I do ? and should I have asked for a percentage before agreeing to the work ?

>> No.2919905

A comic book is a "like" a business. The sales for the book are "like" equity in the business. Usually the business will offer you equity, you don't ask for it, because it's an unreliable source of income, as in, what if the book doesn't sell? Get your paycheck for the work that you did. Don't ask for a percentage in sales unless you are actually one of the creators of the comic book, not just working for a creator.

Stop reading about video games on the internet and getting involved in all the 'hype' and whatnot too, because a lot of it is just getting caught up in the big new release, or whatever people are talking about.

Web browsing is probably the more difficult thing to deal with. Just keep yourself conscious of the fact that once you start, your schedule is going down the toilet, so start any work before you let yourself on 4chan or youtube. Keep yourself away from it until you've got a significant amount of work done. You mean actually paying for it? I paid for nacorda's class but life got in the way again so I just had to rip the videos for later use. Waiting for the final Q&A before they lock me out. Here is my mini review:

Is it worth it? An honest yes and no for figure drawing. When you check their facebook page you'll see them boasting about how their students submissions reflect their teachings--it's a bullshit lie honestly. Many people already come in with talent and 50/50 use what the teacher lectured but mostly sprinkle their own experience. CGMA's marketing in general is snake oil and questionable. Nacorda is a better explainer than hampton, but when it comes to the crits and Q&A don't expect anything eye opening. He'll talk about his brush settings and irrelevant shit the other students ask him and by week 4 you won't have any questions because even /ic/ can critique anatomy so a Q&A is almost pointless. But yes put money down because it's Hampton's course revamped and taught by a younger person who understands your confusion.

I also took a perspective class, the teacher on there is a big weeb and I really enjoyed his content so $700 well spent there no complaints. Very humble guy and contagious laugh and good information. He really enjoys what he does and actually tries to help.

Peter Han no longer is teaching at CGMA. And CGMA is starting to hire youtube celebs and hacks like Robert Cheng. They're quickly going down the toilet in skilled teachers.

So, "avoid symbol drawing" means basically "Draw what you see, not what you think" and to overcome it I have to (among other things) "reduce and dissemble" the drawing object to its basic shapes and forms, right?

Imagine a face. Now imagine this face is caught partially in shadow. creating a bunch of dark shapes all over the head.

If you just draw what you see, you won't be drawing a """head"""", you'll be drawing all the 2d shapes you see in front of you. you'd try and match the 2d shapes as best as you can.

On the issue of drawing 3d shapes, this mostly used when you want to study a subject's form in space or capture depth in your drawings (whether from life or reference.)

Hey folks, so I am pretty beginner tier and this random person from a thread that I frequent is asking me to do a portrait of their dog (see green text below) I tried asking how big they wanted it and if they would be ok with watercolor (my main stick these days) but can't get an answer. I have never really worked commission before.

I could in theory do a 12X18 with the materials I have right now but I don't want to think about shipping it. If it is that big.

What size do you think I should do? What should I charge them?

>Hey, /###/ drawfag, how much would you charge for a portrait of my doggy? Yes, I want a big portrait of my doggo to hang on in my living room because he's qt af. Include shipping and all that shit. I'm very interested in your services and such.

It was soon exposed that my sense of beauty is quite a bit away from everyone else's and my knowledge of literally all fundamentals is gravely lacking. Even so, the fourth or fifth picture I made still looks fine to me and the others, despite being very beginner-tier.
By now I'm usually able to produce a picture that looks good to me, but my female faces still look meh to others and my knowledge of most fundamentals still requires a lot of improvement. A regular 2B pencil can do quite a lot and might be easier for you than starting with a tablet. But since you have the tablet anyway, you might as well try it. It might be more fun for you than a pencil. I think having fun when you start out is more important than getting good right away. If drawing = fun, you'll do it more often.

You could try an art class. It doesn't even have to be "good." It'd just help you get in the habit of drawing, because it can be difficult to self-motivate.

Well, I won't wait and just tell what my problem is. I want to learn how can I draw an animation frame by frame (to better understand how it works) about rotating f.e a cube. I don't know how dimensions and shape would change after moving it in any direction. I've been reading about perspective but for me it seems like this is more useful for static images (but as always, I can be wrong - I'm beginner). Any advices, links to books, youtube's tutorials etc?

Deltoids dislocate if there's too much bending and swivling. Also, the edge of the legs can be caught by the pelvis and scrape it up, making the leg all fucked on the inner thigh.

That you produce a product that merely looks like it's half finished, but not quite, where time and focus on study is taken into account.
