What's your experience with PayPal? How safe is it?

I've been thinking about trying to sell some trash tier commissions but I've ever used PayPal for buying online with my real name and account. There are tutorials about making an invoice and such but what about all the other details?

Do I have to have my real name visible to the commissioner? Should I make a new "fake" account just for commissions? Can I store money I make on PayPal and use it to buy things (I cannot have any income on my bank account)? What if you deliver as agreed but the tumblr/deviantart kid is just feeling malicious or tries to scam their money back saying otherwise. There's been horror stories of people getting their funds frozen for barely any or no reason at all, then all that work would be lost. Can this be prevented by having the client agree to certain terms but how much credibility does that hold in the end?

Discuss everything about the non-art side of doing commissions.

P sure you can make a Paypal business acc or whatnot and put the name as your artist name. No one will have to see your real name.

I think people can see your info even with invoice shenanigans when they look at transaction details after they pay. I never tested it, but that's what it looks like to me. You could give Paypal bogus info, but that will make support calls difficult.

Luckily the doxing is mutual, so it's usually not an issue.

In a bussiness account you can choose what info you give to your clients and what not, I mean it's a bussiness account so it makes sense that it may not have a single person behind. Personally it has worked, people only know my artist name and some my fake name I use on everything but Paypal.

Does it really matter if people can see your real name? I mean, I know the real name of virtually every professional artist I follow, most even go by their real name as their online handle.

I'm from a small country with a rare, local name making it unique in the world and I hate being that easy to track.

It does.

Example: As an artist you can often find people who will want to label you and if it's controversial you can find the discussion getting heated with your personal life getting dragged into this. Next thing you can find a family photo you uploaded on Facebook being used to ridicule you and others in it as a typical artist of "label" type.

Anonymity is your greatest protection on the internet. Don't slander it.

Does it require a legit business to be able to make a business account?

>> No.2899943

Honestly it's kind of hard to sell things without attaching your real name due to the whole taxation thing.
You could incorporate and then use the business name, but I'm pretty sure your name would still be on the articles of incorporation if anyone really wanted to dig on you.

The best bet is to use a business account and hope no one wants to dig into the paperwork of the business to find your name. There might be a way to have someone do the paperwork on your behalf but you'd have to ask an accountant/business lawyer.

I don't get it.
You don't even need buisness acc.
Invoices hide your name.

As others have said, upgrade to a business account (I don't even remember what I had to do for it, so it must be really easy). Always send an invoice for payment with your terms and conditions listed on the invoice (there is a box for this). You can also go to Tools => Invoices, then Settings => Business Information and edit what appears on the invoice (so change the name to a pseudonym, remove address, etc).

I would not keep your money in your PayPal account. Transfer it out to your bank account when you receive it. PayPal CAN freeze your account if they get suspicious or for whatever reason, but it's never happened to me. Just in case, best to not have a bunch of money sitting around in there.

As far as people doing malicious things, I've never had it happen to me. It's possible that it could happen, but as long as you have clear terms in place and deliver in a timely manner it shouldn't be an issue.
