it is pretty bad compared to what everyone else can do but this is honestly the best that i've ever drawn armor. now i just need to figure out how to progress, because i know it isn't perfect, but my eye isn't trained enough to see how to make it better. would someone mind giving me some pointers or maybe a redline?

Sweet drawing, but the painting is not doing it for me. To be honest it's really muddy, both in values and in colour (that secondary greenish light is a bad call in my opinion as it makes no sense and doesn't fit in colour-wise).

I think too that you are not painting it as though it is underwater. You lose out on a lot detail underwater and I think especially in the shadows you can play this up. I did a quick paintover trying to get a clearer value/colour read on the image and make it feel more like an underwater scene. Hope it helps!

mate, first of all those white spots dont work well. Make an underpainting. As some1 mentioned b4, you should use what youve got there as one.
Second, you cannot be afraid of screwing up. Go at it, be bold. its a fucking paint, (oils?) meaning you get almost infinite tries at it. Fuck it up, learn something, move on. It realy isnt that nice in the first place- just being honest

Effective as a representation of a plant, the rest needs work but not too much, I find a lot of artists ruin paintings by labouring at a piece until it lost all the character it had. Those fresh and confident brushstrokes can easily be replaced with timid and self conscious ones.

You can (at least I can) also lose the overall conception of the whole when going back to the same painting again and again, it's a little like repeating the same word until it means nothing. I'm just talking generally, not specifically that painting, which as a I said, still needs some work.

>> No.2887718

>>2887714
well generally, you are right.
I stand by what i said earlier tho, it looks like an underpainting. And the white border around it is noob- paint over the white spots, and work from there. this unidentified plant can use more studying. Also are you sure about the background? it kinda blends with whats on the foreground. And the red who-knows-what in the corner is a bad decision, draws the eye.

For me, best parts of the drawing are palms and the mountains in the bg, they are actually quite nice (although kinda bland) the rest is kinda boring and lifeless to me - cause of the perfectly straight lines. Perspective looks ok in the foreground, but in the bg its all screwed up
Id make the same drawing by hand only and see if it looks better. Unless its suppoused to be architectonic.

Honestly it is missing the impact of the type of image you are going for. The shapes are all very generic rounded, the colours are muddy, the contrast is low. I think you need to try to bring in more interest--see where you can push contrasts or shapes to be more interesting. Use references too, maybe you will find some interesting way the fabric will fall that you couldn't have invented, or a positioning of the hands that is a bit better. It's very symmetrical so automatically is somewhat static, but it can lend itself to some interest graphic things if you want.

The bottom half of the image is basically dead space too. See if you can't come up with a way to make it more interesting. Maybe add in a faint underlighting, or some designs on the robe, or some cool swirling mists (they can help break up the symmetry too), or something else of your own.

The story here also can be made clearer. Who is he? Is he evil? Good? Wise? What is he holding? Is it a gift for us? Is he using it to charge up and cast some spell? Using it to meditate?

Sorry the drawing is kinda bad, I took a picture of it. And they don't have legs because I didn't really finish the drawing. I was waiting for something to come up and maybe that something would cover the legs, so I didn't really drew them. They are both attacking each other: notice the orc's hand flying away and the axe lodged inside the warrior. And no, I'm not coloring it because I am very shit at coloring.

I think your overlapping strokes are holding this back. Try doing a bit of blending. I did this paintover in probably around 3 minutes with a smudge brush and a soft brush so it really doesn't have to take much extra time. It will really help the forms read if you have some gradations in there and try to avoid the muddy values from overlapping strokes.

definitely does look significantly better, but i really don't want to use soft or blender brushes, i'm trying to discipline myself and have a painterly style. I didn't spend as much time blending as I should have, as I was just trying to recognize the muscles and their protrusions. Thanks for the paint over, makes me realize how much blending actually makes a piece lmao

I feel the composition doesn't entirely work. The focal point is presumably the lighthouse/space shuttle, but they are crammed into the corner and the more interesting parts are the clouds and sky. It's also super flat as an image.

I would try changing it so that the image isn't focused on all the dead space of the sky and clouds, but rather that empty space supports the lighthouse and shuttle.

I tried a few things, maybe not all that successful but it might help in some small way. I tried moving the lighthouse out of the very corner, and I put a cloud in front of it too to help get more layering in the image and give it some more depth. I threw a darker value over the lighthouse and shuttle and turned on the light, both these things create some contrast and make the focal point stronger. I still felt the sky wasn't working so just threw in a photo of some rings from Saturn but to be honest it's probably not the best call. A more subtle thing like a shooting star would be nice maybe, or a faint nebula.

Yes, try studying a walk cycle and see how humans walk. The back leg is not sitting in space properly, the shoulders would turn a bit, the arms are in the wrong spots for walking etc. Unless he is meant to be doing something else, in which case you need to make it more clear. The hand poses are just confusing things really.

I also think you should be careful with the lighting, like the colours are weird and the highlight on his head is not anything like how light behaves on forms. Might be good to get some ref on anatomy of the chest and torso.

Who is he supposed to be? Might be good to think through his character more and work on his design. Something as simple as some well researched tattoos might help add interest to this piece.

Still some kid was playing with a toy gun in like a junkyard I believe. He finds something strange, I remember. In the shot at that time of the episode he makes that pose and stands in front of a big fridge from what I remember. So I got the idea as if he opened a door to another dimension kind of.. Basically pausing the video and making a different scene out of the same pose.

I'll share some of Moebius' wisdom with you: "When you draw, you must first cleanse yourself of deep feelings, like hate, happiness, ambition, etc."

Logic is the better than self-loathing. It's fine if you're not satisfied with your work, that means you can improve, unlike most "artists" who delude themselves into complacency. Just don't get angry and crumple up your work, please. You put in a good effort and you should let yourself feel satisfied. You actually DID something, that's more than a hell of a lot of aspiring artists can say.

As for critique, I would say draw directly from life to get a better grasp on 3-dimensional forms, learn how to manipulate your pencil lines to express those forms.

If you want more Moebius wisdom (I strongly recommend to everyone who hasn't read it yet): http://www.openculture.com/2015/03/moebius-gives-18-wisdom-filled-tips-to-aspiring-artists-1996.html

ive also got story behind this- gimme your thoughts if you will;

"Human race is at war. AI rebelled after 200 years of serving our cause, and we are slowly but surely losing the battle. “The Seed” is our last desperate effort, our only chance, to save the humanity. Project in which we put all resources – chance to colonize distant earth-type worlds. Handful of many volunteers has been chosen to serve as the seeds, to spread across the galaxy. It was a great sacrifice- to survive travel at high speeds and then administer the preparation and colonization of new earths, the bio-engineered parasite was injected to their spines and skulls. It strengthened bones and tissues allowing to survive the journey, but more importantly, it turned the volunteers mind into a human-machine, completely erasing any traces of personality leaving only one purpose; to build. To coordinate efforts of countless nano-bots, stored in “The Ark”, ships on which they traveled, alongside with hundreds of thousands of embryos (I guess people dying to protect the laboratories and ensure the launch of nearly 50 Seeds needed something dramatic but not necessarily original). All Scientists who knew routes to the new worlds committed suicide after Arks launched, and all data was turned to ashes, so the AI could not chase the beacons of hope. Once – or if – The Seed arrived to its target, the Ark would burry itself in the ground, and turn into a factory. Then, nanobots would start the search for necessary elements. Once the bridgehead has been build, process of resurrection of our race may start – with the seed buried deep underneath the city, as its forever beating heart."

For starters lay down your background color first. Get it to match the ref as closely as possible. Use this as an anchor to compare and establish other color relationships.

A white canvas makes it hard to judge value and color accurately.

Could use more overlap in the midground, why do you have this little gap in foreground rocks, it doesn't help lead the eye - the figure + value contrast + smaller clusters of details should be enough to pull the eye to that part of the image, the hole detracts more than it adds.

As is its a really dull \ / valley. These should be quick for you to generate, I expect the next time you post for you to have 4 more variations on this idea!

I just wanna say I love the view of the middle piece. The way the perspective on the hills in the background is slightly birds-eye makes them feel as tall as mountains, fitting for a world with boars the size of elephants.

I also like the fact that all three have characters actually interacting with the world. I think this is the best way to portray a setting, rather than a large open view with the cliched silhouette looking forward. It's just that I can't get immersed in a world full of slack-jawed wanderers who find themselves suddenly awestruck by this fantastical world that they apparently LIVE IN.

I look forward to seeing where the third one takes your characters. I just hope it's not some boring old volcano.

>> No.2894106

The figure is awesome, but the environment doesn't match tonally. It seems way too bright and simplistic. Even if you just went over the planets with darker shades that could help the mood. Also, I think by making their shapes so defined it really betrays their scale -- at first I thought the scene outside the window was the horizon of a black sea and blue sky, with two mysterious floating orbs. It's mostly the lava one that bothers me -- it's kinda cartoonish and sloppy, completely unlike the central figure.

>>2891430
Sounds interesting, but the "space Ark" is kind of a cliched plot device, and not exactly a plot in itself. I'm interested in the potential aspect of humanity needing to essentially become the AI that they're running away from in order to survive space travel. Ironically, your story seems to focus on the worldbuilding aspect over characters, while your image focuses on the singular character over the environment he's situated in. They have potential, but right now the ideas seem a bit adrift in space, if you will.

You really could take any number of approachs - Make a selection of the areas and use masks while painting over the lineart, merging as you see fit so you can keep looser less computer generated clean edges. Or as in 3. try painting under your lineart for a while and using it as a guide for general values and color before slowly painting over it when you have a better sense of what you want.

Theres many ways to go about it, it depends on how you're using your lineart as a stepping stone - a general guide or a concise one to make neat selections from.

You might find; https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTPD-Im7Fls_7hhdvi79jfg - his process interesting, its very clinical but it works well.

The dude's foreshortening is ok if taken separately. It just doesn't match the perspective of the rest of the scene at all. It's like he's leaning way back (but the shadow is like he's standing). Maybe you were going for a fisheye perspective but again the rest of the scene doesn't match. You should see this kind of thing in the early stages of the sketch where you take the whole scene's perspective into account.
