As usual I will gladly accept any suggestions about what could be added and changed about the text and links from the current OP.

Also, for the arts used for the OP and this very post, I usually pick at random from my folder but if you guys would like to be showcased then feel free to tell me.

I made this roughly a year or so ago. One of my friends asked if I could draw his character so I made some pixel art. I really need to get back into this.

IIRC it was over a period of about 2-3 days. At that point I made no pixel art for about 6 years so I had to re-learn some techniques.

no I mean it that guy is obnoxious and his character is fugly as fuck
the "pixel art" itself is okay even if the shading gets wonky and shadows aren't cast, but it's so high res it might as well just be a drawing at that point

to me it looks like you're not really commiting to any shapes/surfaces and just make stuff rounder and rounder to the point of everything becoming balloon-like.

desu this artist has some anatomy issues but I think his rendering is topnotch and it might give you some ideas on how to stop thinking with spheres

>> No.2847168

So you're saying I'm using too many soft shapes in placing the shading and I should try for more hard lines in my rendering? Just trying to figure out what stuff is too round.

the right upper arm has basically merged together triceps/biceps and are about 3 times larger than the deltoids, which by the way lack any sort of definition.

I think if you're going for a more cartoony style you should be more comfortable with having more flat surfaces and more hard edges.

He also has big round tits (I'm assuming they're supposed to be large pecs) and the ribs arent really visible at all below his pecs (exaggerated for effect on the right)

You're saying this as if these people don't realize this themselves, like they're purposely trying to get into Pixel Art despite lacking skills just to annoy people.

A lot of people truly want to get into Pixel Art because the medium resonates with them, because this is where and how they envision their artistic journey to be and they don't have the strength and patience to grind never ending fundies with a piece of a paper and a pen like /ic/ always loves to parrot. Drawing what you want to draw is important, art is hard and not always very funny, people do what they can manage to do. I've seen Pixel artists starting from the very bottom, being shit at art in general, not giving up, continuing on and they did become relatively decent eventually.

On a side note I believe it's possible to learn art in general by applying fundies to pixel art.

Obviously they can be total shit and eventually improve, but it's a lot easier to practice the foundations in media other than pixel art. It's like learning shading and anatomy and form by making mosaics instead of paper and pencil.

I think you might be insinuating what goes inside people's head a bit too much.

Besides even if we roll with that, it is indeed true that some parts of pixel art are more noob friendly than traditional or digital art.

I have a hard time finding my own "muh style". I already got the basics done by the way, but I'm just not sure how I should pixel, although I know I want to. I'm working on a game but regarding this I'm fine because it inherently has limitations so it helps (like, sprites size, etc), but when it comes to draw or make an illustration in general... I'm a bit lost.

Should I study a lot of artists every day until I develop my own signature and hope for one day to have something of my own?

just edit sprites.
I loved super metroid, saw the trailer for MSR388. I loved every second of the trailer. Fucking amazingly smooth animations, all edits of the original SM.
I figured, how hard can it be? Small sprites, easy palette, nothing but interpolation.
Holy shit did I learn a lot just making "in between" frames to smoothen out animations.
instantly got a hang of all the shortcuts... making blobs of pixels as replacements for different body parts, gettin the flow of the animation down, key frames, etc.

Start by making simple things. Make a ball, a box, a cube, a sphere, smilies, emoticons, your own text font by hand. Mess around with color palettes and the color wheel. Make stick figures, then embolden the lines. Make heads and faces with the aim of not being a smilie/emoji. Make super shitty hands. Make better hands. Make strong hands. Make furniture, floor tiles, carpet tiles, wall tiles.

That's how I started and progressed. Recently got into legit animation even though so far I've only tried simple stuff like gif related. If you want inspiration to improve your spritework, play sprite-based games! They'll give you a really good reference for dynamic poses and the different styles out there.

Whatever you do keep this in mind: it'll always look really shitty until you zoom out quite a bit. Don't get hung up on the details and stay zoomed in the entire time!

No idea if you're into (retro) RPGs or not but I heavily recommend them if you need fantasy inspiration. From 1 to 9 (10 is good too but maybe not as your first). For a lot of the early ones you'll have to dig over /vr/ (or /v/) to know which versions would be best to play though since they've had a lot of different remakes.

fa/tg/uy here. Currently working on Tiled spritesets for mapmaking. Trying to get some creative criticisms/suggestions on what I've done so far.

Currently have Engraved floors/Smooth walls with rough floors done so far.

I'm going to flat out say this isn't 100% mine, I'm using some sprite sheets from Dwarf Fortress, Specifically Ironhand, for this. Mainly, this is for people to make free maps for things such as RollD20, Tapletop Simulator, and the like that aren't just photoshopped messes or black/white squares.

Since /tg/ doesn't seem to be interested in anything expect trollposting and 40k, I'd figured I'd ask here. Do note the colors used are suppose to be for Microcline, Bauxite, All shades of rock ranging from Andesite, Granite, Chalk and the like, Marble, and Sandstone/Red Sandstone/Iron containing stone.

I was thinking of experimenting with non native colors, such as dyed stones and the like.

Also I don't know how much it changed since.

I'm not against recommending it and didn't mean to sound like bashing it (which my initial comment absolutly sounded like, sorry for that), what i mean with shilling is that there seems to be people who go against the very idea that other people prefer other software to pixel. I haven't seen any justification for putting it above others, other than personal preference (which is the same reason I don't like it, I know, I know..)
