Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I started on the 6th ..ish... of January.

Shooting for a cartoon style, not photorealism, but I want to avoid good-enough-itis. I am shooting for correct proportion, perspective, anatomy, and lighting... Obviously exaggerated or stylized, but consistently correct.

I'm constructing from imagination. I dig up a reference if I get stuck somewhere. I have a smattering of guides, and I've read Loomis.

Here's a few from yesterday and today.

Maybe eventually somebody will give some advice...

I'm extending my 20 minute limit to 40 as I get further along, because I found I can't finish in 20 anymore.

Sorry for the late reply, it looks like you don't know how to make things look 3d, I recommend learning to understand form first before anything and then learn the laws of light. Your proportions are messed up, you should learn proportions then do 10-50 Reilly head constructions a day. Practice them frequently and study the skull as well so that you get a better idea of why the head looks the way it does. When you're settled up then study Asaro heads so you can get a better feeling for the planes of the head and so that your drawings stop looking flat. As they stand now, your self portraits make you look as if you have black blotches on your face rather than shadows. Good luck, anon.

PS: I have sketchbooks full of me doing form drills, Vilppu exercises are great for this, you'll gain a lot from them. If you want to learn head proportions then look up "Steve Huston head construction" on youtube.

Usually you mark down your darkest and lightest areas in the beginning so you have a reference. Or at least that's what I do. Some people are amazing and can see value itself, but I'm a bit blinded by color. Anyways, this is how the value gradient chart applies. Once you know your darkest and lightest areas, everything else is in-between and just make sure to have enough of a range by looking at your gradient chart or with your eyes. If you're not used to rendering, you won't be able to tell though. Even one stroke is enough to make a change in the value of an area.

Use a bigger brush to block your value. A medium brush will instantly give you this dirty result.

As in a landscape draw rear plans first. In exemple, Draw the eyeball and iris, then eyelids.

Think and paint in mass. In exemple your hair is a mass connected to the top of the head, not a scribbled wig.

Mark your plans more.

Trace some vertical and horizontal lines to check if the proportions match your model.

Very close, be more careful with the diminishment of the far arm. Also the legs should be a bit thicker. The movement of the line on the back looks really stiff, you should try to curve it a little so it's a bit more natural.

The head is too small, you're stylizing too much right now. The design decisions were slight better in the left drawing.

What you need to understand about facial proportions is that very few people have the "perfect" proportions (1/3,/1/3,1/3) Most people will have 2 that are the same and one that is a bit bigger or smaller(which you did in your drawing on the left) What I'd recommend is printing out some pictures of heads, getting some tracing paper, and tracing out the loomis construction on top of a few, then trying it out by eye on the same picture. This will help you understand how you simplify things in your brain, and hopefully should help you overcome it.

Also just draw on some actual drawing paper, a pad of newsprint costs $2, or a pad of cartridge paper will set you back $4 whole dollars.

Getting the proper supplies shouldn't cost you much more than ~$20 to get started ( pad of paper, piece of wood and some clips, pencils and an eraser)

I went for more or less the same designs just with different proportions.

Thanks for the advice. I'll probably put away drawing from imagination for a while. I had a two week break while doing DOTRSOTB and some portraits.
I also wonder. Is it a good idea to draw portraits at all at this point? Or should of focus on keys to drawing and do it after that (or even after other books?)

>Also just draw on some actual drawing paper, a pad of newsprint costs $2, or a pad of cartridge paper will set you back $4 whole dollars.
Oh, that's what I normally do. It's just that I was on a 3-hour bus ride, got bored and turned out this was the only thing I had with me. I also thought the squares might be useful to show the proportions differences. Basically I also used 1:1:1:1/2 but the upper border of the second part from the bottom is where the eyes end not the brow.

Bretty good I'm not sure if you're going for anime or your own kind of style though but it looks nice.

You really need to bone up on your fundamentals though, you can never do that to much. day 1 or year 10 you should always work that.
Even if it seems stupid as fuck you might want to dedicate a couple weeks or months to practice depending on how serious you are about it.

>Week 1 shapes
>Week 2 perspective shapes
>Week 3 get boxes, arrange them, draw them repeat
>Week 4 involve other house hold items
>Rinse and repeat for long as necessary
Don't draw characters during that time it'll muddy the waters of what you're trying to teach yourself.
All things are mass and all mass is represented in shapes, drawing is the illusion of 3d space placed on a 2d plane. To create that illusion
we must understand and master how we set it up rather than how we finish it.

Once you get done with at least 1 month of this you'll understand where you're weak and what you need to improve upon without much need for guidance.
All flaws stem from their origin more often than their ending so this will help you trace back many of your problems and it's better to fix the underlying problem than
it is to try and build around the final flaw. I could think of a million metaphors to explain it but i think you'll get the idea.

Nobody ever likes the idea of "go back" or "start over" but you'll always have easier and better results if you just take care into the foundation rather than
scrambling to patch over a flaw that didn't make itself so apparent until you were almost done.

Make sure to take a step back too, you draw the way you do because your brain thinks it's fine as is some times and if you give it a moment to rest and look at it again
you'll see where something might be off that wasn't apparent to a weary mind before. Often that's why complete novices might be able to spot something you over looked.
