How did you learn fabrics and folding? From reference or Shit tons of reading? Both?

Fold, pose fabric in real life, on a chair, see what it does, even better if you have a mannequin.
I just do studies of that and look at other artists work at the same time, see how they painted what I am trying.

Like in books that explain how fabrics behave.

reference as in pictures of fabric? Jesus this have to be one of the easiest things to set up yourself and draw from life.. Reading about folds.. ffs man. Get that sheet, throw it on the chair, and start drawing it.

practice all the time. If you are not strong in an area try drawing and painting that subject until you become better at it.

Keep practicing. This is one I did from a John Singer Sargent painting. Study the folds on your own. Try posing in a mirror with folded fabric so you can get the fabric drawing or painting from life.

Here is an example where I folded up a towel and draped it over the washing machine. Then I had a reference for the shadows. It in in my painting, but has a few issues. It looks too flat, and I need to make it pop out more. I think I need to focus on shadow and half tones in ti to have it stand out more.

Don't you think that it will be better to paint a still life from life than copy a photo of the same subject?
