Animation is an expensive and difficult process, so you have to pick between detail and animation quality

SU has a lot of elaborate animation sequences, so it was decided to go for simple characters that make simple expressions because they are easier to animate quickly.

By the time SU had a big enough budget to get a more detailed style, they had already established a look for the show, and it was too late to turn back

See, on tv, they don't have the budget to do all of the animation in house

The layout/key animation, which consists of all of the important drawings and poses is done in house

the key animation is then exported to some shithole third world country like korea, where they animate the less important things like walk cycles and the frames inbetween still poses.

They also do the inking and coloring in said third world countries, most of which employ wagecucks that hate their jobs and hate their lives

As a result, you end up seeing a lot of mistakes in the less important drawings, because the guy drawing them couldn't give any less of a shit about what he was drawing

Look at the fight scenes in SU, and you'll notice that they look a hell of a lot better then the rest of the show

It's because most of the animation in the fight scenes is done in america by people that actually care about what they're drawing

I mean for instance Ren and Stimpy is a pretty ugly and gross cartoon but the main chracters have some pleasing designs that kinda off set the more gross moments. You need that balance. Art is hard. It's a very cutthroat world and HUGELY competitive, so it's understandable that once in awhile you're gonna be a little jealous or envious of an artist you feel doesn't deserve the attention they get.

but that's the art world in general. It's why I fucking LOATHE abstract work most of the time, because while i get some elements and principles of design go into it, it's still bullshit anyone could make and duplicate and I don't think that deserves to overshadow work that takes skills over money.

So I think this is just part of the problem. They're not a terrible artist, they aren't a master, they're okay and it's okay people find the style appealing. It's better than some people doing professional work these days (Like some of the WoW artists for instance. Some are great others obviously have some anatomy issues)

Depends. I think artists who do more stylization can adapt that cartoony look to their human art too and sometimes come out well. It's the ones who try o do too much of a humanish-dog look that end up degrading a lot because that relies more on morphing both proportions.

Compare Mickey Mouse to anthro Balto work or something to get what I mean.

But then you have people like bunnybooboo (or whatever her name was) who are great and then one day something happens and their work is absolute garbage. Used to follow her in my furry-phase in high school (I was more on the cartoony side but god the sexualization of my doodles people gave me and the creepy porn of my character turned me off it) and when I found her again recently i was shocked by how awful she'd gotten.

So i guess...Balance? If you're gonna draw furry, don't ONLY draw furry. Furries are way too forgiving on bad art too..

The do sometimes add more detail when it's needed for a scene similar to Adventure Time, but you have it pretty on the money. The biggest tell is comparing pilots to their real counterparts. Sometimes they're already simple and it shows how it benefits it (Gravity Falls pilot for instance) while other times like SU it's a little bit more detailed and the characters have more weight (Compare the pilot Steven to the premiered Steven for instance. He looks like he can float away while the pilot steven I legit thought was like a fat high schooler when I first saw it (and I did see it before the show aired).

This is why I prefer fanart that pushes past the show's style and does something original with it.
