is it possible for a single person to make an animated movie?

if you're skilled in all required areas, yeah
it'll just take a long time. one of the required skills by the way is management and planning and all that stuff. you could be great at animating but shit at planning and turning your movie concept into something organized and workable

Nick Cross is an animator that worked in Ren & Stimpy a long time ago, and currently works for Cartoon Network.

>The film was single-handedly created by Hiroshi Harada. Given the subject matter, Harada had found it impossible to gain sponsors. He then used all of his life savings to make the film over a five-year period. Over 5,000 separate sheets of animation were hand-drawn by Harada.

>> No.2820352

Well, 26 fps is somewhat standard for animation. If we assume you have god-like speed and can draw one frame per minute, that's about a half hour per second of animation; or 150 hours for a five minute short (excluding coloring, writing, recording, storyboards, sound design, editing, and mistakes, of.course.).

So, to answer your question: yes, if you have no life to live.

if you want to do it yourself, do it in 3d. Still a hell of a lot of work, and you'll have to compromise your vision in areas to get it done, but its doable in a feasible amount of time.

yes but it could end up looking too smooth (like those after effects flat animations) for software i think the most used ones are tvpaint animation, opentoonz, adobe animate and synfig.

there's an anime called shirobako where they go through the process of animating a tv series it seems pretty accurate.

that's technically the way most japan animation studios work, only the color is applied digitally nowadays (although some animators are finally picking up digital animation nowadays)

but yeah if you want, you can get some acme hole punch tool (really expensive) some acme punched sheets or so and do it.

It really makes me sad 2d animation is kind of dead outside of japan.

>> No.2820454

>>2820447
OH I forgot to mention the peg bars and a scanner.
for convenience just use digital, is way easier (you have to manually scan those sheets by the way, think about how long that takes, as you have to do it one by one since they can clog those automatic scanners since they're punched sheets)

It is, but it's extremely laborious. There was a feature-length film that came out last year called Nova Seed that was done, for all intents and purposes, by one person. I think it took him a year or two, but unlike the other shorts posted in this thread it was a full hour or so in length.

He was shopping it around at festivals last year and did a talk at one I was at and explained what he had to go through to make it. He forced himself to finish one shot a day, from rough layout, to rough animation, to clean, to composite, and worked 16 hours or so a day. Aside from the music, voice acting, and some writing credits that went partly to his brother, he did it all, and a lot of the time it meant that once a decision was made it was kept without question. The film looks relatively nice and is entertaining, though the story meanders a bit and doesn't make a whole lot of sense. He quit his job to work on it and was under extreme pressure from his wife, but in the end it was well received from most at the festivals.

Here's a trailer, a lot of it looks rotoscoped, but apparently almost nothing is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ADm0BSHMeA
