This fills me of despair
Please tell me this isn't common
And don't fucking dare even thinking of doing it, ever.

books tutorials and practice

I'm quite smart. I passed my high school final exams with almost max scores studying just the day before. Yet art is really something beyond me.
In school or uni you just open your shitty book, study it or do some exercises and it's done. When I was playing the guitar and the piano I just practiced on the same song again and again until I was getting better. Sports are 99% matter of continuos training.
But art, art feels so confusing, I don't know where to start, it requires concentration, autistic amount of grinding and you are not guided as much as when you were in school.
This is pasta potential, right?

Couldn't agree more OP.

Cancelled my schoolism membership, sold my tablet, and threw away all of my sketchbooks.

Such a waste of time. And for what? It's completely unnecessary and serves no purpose.
Art is not needed, especially in today's society where the intellect, personality, and face reigns supreme.

To be honest, the "artistic lifestyle" seems almost like a childish endeavour at this point, and I don't mean any disrespect, but it seems like the most serious artists (asides from guys who are legit conceptartists/illustrators/porn artists but they represent a very low % of dedicated lifters) are also the people with nothing else going on in their lives.
I know this was true with me, I was biggest and most serious about drawing when I was still in uni, working only 15 hours a week, and pretty much just plucking around all the time, going out, with no real life.
To all you kids out there who are getting sucked into the comerical art , try to stop yourself.
So long as you have and maintain decent facial aesthetics, you'll be fine.
Art just not worth it.

Cheers.

Jeff Watts was talking about how one of his students was a neurosurgeon, and that guy told him that learning how to draw was the hardest thing he's ever done, and that he eventually had to give up art because he couldn't pursue both at once.

Bullshit. I've been drawing all my life, but didn't seriously start studying until last march because of a stupid reason (inspired by a movie). Went to /ic/ and lurked. Bought a stack of books a foot high. Got two tablets and a sketchbook and started drawing every minute of every day, and when I couldn't, I read the books. And it worked, I got better in 1 year than the previous 22 put together. If you aren't willing to put in the work you don't deserve to get the results. /ic/ only respects the very best because people that are worthy of that respect have put in countless hours perfecting their craft. Not everyone has that motivation and if they can't hack it, so be it. I hate hearing from people who complain that they aren't good enough yet refuse to dedicate the necessary time and effort to become skilled.

I know nobody is ever gonna believe this shit but I am close to graduating with an MD. AND HOLY SHIT, It is hard to draw decently, Whenever you get close to someone you aspire the threshold keeps going up.

I can safely assume that in a few years I will feel comfortable with most medical situations of the primary care kind... But art, Jesus, I'd be lucky if I got the hang of it before 60.

most of art beginners that aren't little kids will lose interest. mainly because getting better requires commitment and effort, and people are lazy.
that's another reason why giving specific advice to beginners is a dumb thing to do.
see a beginner? tell them to learn loomis and that's it. if they are smart and can commit to art, they'll listen. if they are dunner krugers without a future, they won't. simple as that.

What are you talking about? As a beginner, this place is great, it has many resources and a critical eye to tell you when your shit sucks. It's even sort of nice to newfags who post out of the /beg/ threads, compared to some other places I've been. I've learned more here in a month than I thought was possible. I learned drawing is an immense task, but that makes it all the more sweet when you succeed.

Of course, I practice two hours a day and mainly lurk. But /ic/ is pretty great. It may look harsh because 90% of posts are criticism, but we all want each other to make it.

more than likely he just stopped posting his work cause he became self-aware or got better at self-critiquing his own work.

being able to self-critique is such a huge bonus for any artist, you save so much time and you learn a lot more when you do seek out critique because it won't be basic level stuff anyone with a pair of eyes should be able to see.
