Post your current drawing here and provide helpful criticism and advice to others!

This is not a thread to discuss your autism, the rest of the board is for that.

Please make sure your posted image is clear, DOWNSIZED TO AROUND 1000 PIXELS WIDE, ROTATED TO THE CORRECT ORIENTATION, and that any unused space is cropped.
If you want critique on a drawing from the previous thread, you can delete it there and repost in this one and then kill yourself.

Haha, nice to see that someone really did take a look. It's true with that rear, it was thinking to trick more with dust and so on, but perspective is perspective.

I have to point out, that your example is really badly hacked t16 and most likely not a real Group B car. Real one does feature front flaps at the end of rollcage, since the whole front end comes off in two big pieces. There's no point attaching it to a hollow front end.

I'm not going to paint it for you, but I can tell you what I think.

Anyway, 1, Your lightsource is vague as shit. I want to believe it's a strong light coming from the top right based on the shine of her hair and the strong shadow by her neck, but the cast shadows in the rest of the painting do not reflect that. The lack of inconsistent lighting makes her face look flat.

2, You want to avoid doing the strand-by-strand painting for hair like you did here. Treat it like a block rather than thousands of strands. and then after you've blocked out your values, maybe try some fancy detailing or what have you.

3, Your skin values are fucked. Reel it back in because they all kind of stay extremely high. It sort of has to do with my first point and it's why idk what your lighting situation is like. I want to thing it's a very powerful light but your shadows don't reflect that bright light source if that's the case.

The other one definitely hit more "cute" landmarks. You shrunk her cranium, big heads are more associated with cuteness. You made her eyes a drooping shape while the upward slanted almond shape from the original is also a generally more appealing shape. The extra lines and definition around the mouth aged her. You added color but overall distorted the structure and did not add much aesthetic appeal to it.

you should work on adding volume and cleaning up brush strokes - > your clouds kind of look mushy and without volume, same goes for the waves, its kind of occupying a weird space between graphic and rendered? Meaning if you added more depth (i think you should focus on depth) or made it more flat/graphic I think it would be more pleasing- my 2 cents

give us more to look at. Currently a humanoid on mars looking at an asteroid or some kind of heavenly force. Is she wearing space gear? Or is that a bandanna on her head? Is she even on Mars? And wtf's she doing with that hand?

All questions aside, lovely composition and colours, would personally like to see a bit more definition in context because just feels slightly too empty atm.

Please sort out the shadow it's so distracting from what is an excellently drawn medieval guy. No qualms with this except that the arm holding the sword seems a bit off. first off use a ref, darker values for the nostrils/irises/neck area under the face, block out the hair and ear too dont render only one area, its flat and lacking in depth (not only for the nose. the brow bone/lips/tip of nose/chin should protrude) also your brush strokes are messy and don't follow a contour: look at the forehead, why are you using directional strokes that way

DId a quick redline, hope you don't mind!

THe main thing here is that you have a 3/4 head view, but your nose is mostly front facing. This can be resolved by paying attention to the planar structure of the face.

If things are looking off, double check planes and direction!

Riffing on what the previous anon stated - it can help to make your strokes directional, following the contour and structure in order to let them inform that.

for showing depth on organic objects, you have cues like a same size object repeated, like a tree that is big in the front and small in the back, and when this tree goes back you see less detail/colors are desaturated/edges are softer. For your waves picture, it seems to be all on one plane, while there is depth you showed you can push it: the whites and blues in the front can be warmer/cooler depending on what color temperature shift you want, the small waves in the front could use more clarity/I want to see how the wave is splashing over in the middle, the form could change further, like it doesn't overlap that much-the wave coming forward doesn't really look like it's coming forward. this also applies to the painted clouds-clouds aren't flat objects in the sky they have volume, imagine the contours of the clouds and draw your strokes to follow it. Also check out ruo li paintings for how he handles waves

nah I'm done.

deleted my blog, sold my tablet, and threw away all of my sketchbooks.

Such a waste of time. And for what? It's completely unnecessary and serves no purpose.
Art is not needed, especially in today's society where the intellect, personality, and face reigns supreme.

To be honest, the "artistic lifestyle" seems almost like a childish endeavour at this point, and I don't mean any disrespect, but it seems like the most serious artists (asides from guys who are legit conceptartists/illustrators/porn artists but they represent a very low % of dedicated lifters) are also the people with nothing else going on in their lives.
I know this was true with me, I was biggest and most serious about drawing when I was still in uni, working only 15 hours a week, and pretty much just plucking around all the time, going out, with no real life.
To all you kids out there who are getting sucked into the comerical art , try to stop yourself.
So long as you have and maintain decent facial aesthetics, you'll be fine.
Art just not worth it.

cheers

>> No.2809530

>>2809526
Take a look around you.
Chances are you're in a house.

Guess what someone designed your house. Someone designed your computer. Someone designed your clothes. You know that tablet? I'm sure there was a small team who designed the look of that.

ANYTHING that you see, touch, use has literally been someone elses design.

You know those cubicles that you're going to be stuck in for 40 years? Someone designed that too. Your favorite movie? A bunch of creative teams built that.

To say that art isn't important is to be completely ignorant to the world you exist within. Anything you interact with: the chair you sit in, the desktop UI, any game you can think of, product packages, clothes, shoes, cars, houses, weapons, utility items, utensils, your bed...Everything has been created by an artist.
Art is literally everywhere, and yet you choose to leave this world where your ideas are not only valued, but consumed by the public. Artists create trends, styles, and brands. While just developing pretty illustrations is totally fine, an artist can literally be the creator of anything. UX designers literally create experiences. It may not seem like art, but you are still creating the way someone interacts with something else.

I'm sorry you have to go, and you won't be missed. Sure artists arent going to cure cancer, nor are we going to mix chemicals together. But artists create experiences, and that alone is much more powerful in the long term.

Art is worth it, but it isn't for everyone. Peace man, go into business management or head towards med school. Art can be compared to these other professions because of the amount of training and influence it has on the world. Anything else and you'll be REALLY wasting your life.

Trying out new brushes, this came out. I'm having more fun going straight to color instead of adding it to value afterwards, but my color knowledge is still weak and I think mine always have an artificial feel to them.

Btw, does anyone know of a PS brush that's similar to the Dry Brush in Corel Painter? I like how flexible it seems to be (soft or hard edges anytime you want), but I'd prefer not to change software at this point.

Also very messy atm. I usually clean it up before I go forward by making a new layer and drawing over it again and sometimes even a third time.. Then I color it by adding flat color and cell shading.

If I were to continue from that into painting it I would make a layer on top of the color and shadow layer and start blending in some soft edges and adding some values by picking values from the piece and changing it slightly with the sliders and adding that into the piece.

I personally think it has something to do with scale,-
If I try to isolate the scenery and only look at the building, I get the impression that it is very large and vast, but introducing the characters into the scene breaks this illusion and I find it slightly jarring. If you look at the people going up the stairs: they look as if they should be clearing the steps two or three at a time. Perhaps you could also try to play around with your hues a little more to create a sense of depth? Beautiful work.
