Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

→ →
There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Not a bad attempt but the anatomy is pretty off in most places. The breasts are too low, even for a naturally hanging look. Shoulders are lopsided, they don't look like they're tilted yet properly aligned. No anatomy in the hips, the arms are bent at an incredibly awkward angle and I don't want to try explaining what's wrong with the legs. Everything lacks the illusion of 3D form as well. Some nice line work but much study is still needed before you'll draw a more convincing body without reference.

how should one handle having a 'fragmented' piece from imagination but its imcomplete. for example, you have a really specific detailed head for a creature design you think is really cool but you mind is completely blank and cant visualize the rest of the body. it should be okay to work on just the head right?

>> No.2785618

>>2785617
I would suggest looking at a bunch of photos of creatures for inspiration and doing some studies of them to help you get ideas. Then do a few sketches of ideas for your original character. Things always look better when developed all at once rather than pieced together as you go along.

>> No.2785619

if you have creature as a whole but can only visualise the head, i think its the case that you also can visualise the rest. simply try harder.

close your tabs

close your ears
give it a minute or two just attempting it.

alternatively you only have the head, just do what fits.

Well if it's a really out there design all the more reason you should try to flesh it out as a whole rather than piece by piece unless you want some kind of effect of looking like it's stitched together or something. If you don't do studies of real creatures to help, which I still think you should to get extra detail, maybe you could look at some more abstract creature designs like from Monsters Inc or something like that to see how they've handled balancing what would be unbalanced creatures.

I like your chunky brush style Anon. But if you want, just go over the piece with a softer low opacity brush and smooth out any unnecessary edges you see. It takes practice to figure out a good balance of soft blending and harder edges between values.

>> No.2786041

no, the right brushes can save you a shit ton of time if you know what you're doing with them. Texture brushes are the most useful imo. However if you overuse brushes that stamp trees or grass or whatever, it'll look lazy and bad if it's too obvious

Thank you, I see now that everything reads flatter than it should. The head looks like a profile when my intention was to make it look tilted back, almost as if looking up like a bird would, or off in the distance with contempt. I think it's only a matter of fixing the jawline and showing more of the inside of the mouth. When I was drawing them, I treated it as one box when I should have treated it as multiple

as for the body, I have made a similar mistake. I was aiming for it to be in 3/4rths but angled down, as if we were looking more down at the beast. I need to alter it's back, I assume, to give it that feeling

I posted this before I went to bed after a really long day and worded my questions wrong. When I said proportions, I think I was just talking about the features in general. My biggest concern with this, aside from its proper construction, is that it is interesting
>>2786033
my underdrawing has the proper perspective lines, I guess I just worded that question wrong as well, I wanted to make sure everything looks like it's grounded on the same plain. That the beast was solid.

thank you for both of your help, I'm on my way to go alter its body to add visual interest. Any feedback about anything else is deeply appreciated

Can someone recommend a good book for learning construction? I'm good at drawing still life/copying reference images, and I understand basic perspective. Also, what is your opinion on "How to Draw" by Scott Robertson?

Can't tell without the ref, but there's a pretty stark contrast between the pupils and the whites of the eyes which makes me think there's still a liiiiiittle bit of symbol drawing going on. Same goes for the very segmented ringlets of hair and beard. But again, maybe it does look that way in the ref. The basic idea is to not draw what "should" be there (ie very clearly delineated pupils/lips/hair).

I get the feeling that even if I understand that I should break down what I see to lines and curves, I just can not do it. Maybe I just suffer from symbol drawing, I don't know. I don't even know how much should I practice and how. Should I draw as the tutors draw? Then I just end up copying their image instead of paying attention to the original.

Too many middle tones. Needs more brights and darks.

You should look into head construction on the side when you're not drawing them from life.

Knowing the three dimensional shape of the face, even roughly, will help you with those angles. Definitely would help those noses from being so flat.
