Why is Ruan Jia so idolized here? The only thing that is pleasant too look at when it comes to his work is the technique. He knows how to render but besides that his art is lacking imagination. There is no emotion, every piece of art of his is plain and boring. inb4 fuck off to modern art

I love old approach to drawing focusing on fundamentals and overall substance over style but at the same time you cant get too boring with that. Are chinese doomed to be so bland and generic forever?

It's not "Interesting/Emotional Artwork", it's "Artwork/Critique". It's only natural for a place that is dedicated to self-improvement to value people with vast technical skill.

You are free to provide us with examples of modern artists with same skill level who are also good at whatever you call "emotion" and "not being plain and boring".

If you can't find any or, god forbid, think that cartoon/comic/anime shit is worth mentioning in this context (they are perfectly fine in any other discussion) then, guess what? Ruan Jia is basically one of the best if not THE BEST digitalfag out there (mostly because of his strong tradfag fundamentals). Digitalfags basically don't have anyone else and need Ruan to not feel forever bad about digital art looking like total shit.

Calling chinese artists bland and generic seems to be a defense mechanism of unskilled, insecure western artists. If anything, I feel many chinese artists are pushing the boundaries way more than their western counterparts within the entertainment industry. They allow you to get lost in their work and explore it, find interesting things that you won't see on first glimpse. Also, they tend to be much more playful with their perspective and compositions.

Art by western artists in the industry always feels very straight forward and simple. I mean, I can appreacciate that as well, but there is no way I can ever get lost in a Jaime Jones or Craig Mullins painting.

Saying he's bad is simply wrong. But I think I wouldn't say he's super good either. He's just pretty alright, his roughness and noise in paintings looks interesting but it's nothing to make him extraordinaire or something. Filthy lies. He chopped parts of some old masterwork into a comp to show to Blizzard to give them an idea what his completed OIL painting would look like.

Mullins is not photobashing with oil paint, I promise. Though he does use photos in his concept art sometimes like literally every other concept artist.

His oil paintings are pretty bad though. Some of his watercolor work is alright, but let's not pretend Mullins is some great traditional artist who just uses digital as a means to create compositions. That digital painting with the copy-pasted masterpainting in it IS the final product he did for Blizzard. The oil painting based on it was just exibition work or for fun.

I don't know why this is hard to understand, but technique is emotion. For those who paint, and are able to look at the painting itself and not just the depicted object, every little decision contributes to the emotion of the piece. I often get a feeling of transcendence looking at his color choices and lighting, something very few other artists can provide without being cheesy. Also, a little subtlety goes a long way
