ok i never got mondrian

even my hardest most prententious art history boner could not sustain a love for mondrian

but holy shit i finally get it

ladies and gentleman ; the precursor to pixel art
the one and only 1920's pixel artist

it's really not the precursor to pixel art, he doesn't even use a regular grid most of the time. it's just geometric. and pixel art has nothing to do with "getting" mondrian

pic related is a direct analog to pixel art that predates both the computer and mondrian (c.1785)
