Not the fella who suggested the squinting, but:

It's basically squinting your eyes and blurring your vision so you can see shapes and shades better. It makes it a little easier to pinpoint contrasts too -- darks look darker, lights look lighter. Google "squinting painting" or something to that effect. [spoiler]I've heard it suggested multiple times in classes and literally didn't appreciate its value until now... doing it now with paintings and it helps a bunch

My poor ass answer is going to be a regular tablet. I think in the sticky there's a rec list. If money isn't a problem, read up about the cintq and see if it's what you want and something you'd genuinely get use out of for the money. You squint to lose superficial detail and simplify value forms.

Bright values go closer together and get relatively righter, dark values clump together and get darker. This allows you to see past details and smaller values and go straight for big shapes of light and shadow.

Do not squint for color though, only for value.

I know that feel bruh. I'm still a beginner but sometimes I look at the stylized stuff people with no fundies do and it's better than my stuff. I think the main reason is just cause I hadn't studied stylized stuff, so if you wanna improve on it you gotta do studies of a styles you like. For example, I recently started studying cartoony stuff and a little bit of anime and realized that it's extremely shape based, so some people would just draw circles for the head, eyes and pupils and then just use elongated cylinders for all the limbs and they'd get an appealing character out of that. Whereas I'd try to indicate things like bone structure or I'd try to follow traditional proportions and my stuff would look like ass.

Learn hwo to construct stuff properly. Learn the basics, i.e. how to draw spheres, pyramids, cones, cubes, etc and then apply that to ref. So try to construct everything from a photo (instead of just sight sizing with the angles) and the more you do it, the easier it should get when you do it from imagination.

>> No.2780926

>>2780903
Oh, if you want to draw from imagination you're going to have to just build up your visual library over time and learn to draw from memory. A visual library is a mental collection of subjects (like animals, architecture, vehicles, plants etc) that you have drawn and studied in depth enough to just recall the information at the snap of a finger (and if your skills are up to par you should be able to do so accurately). This is just built up over time with lots of memory drawing (look up the shrimp method for how to train for that). Eventually you can easily put together different parts of animals and plants youve studied to make aliens, or anatomy and machinery to make characters with artificial body parts, for example. So figure out what things you want to be able to use when you draw from imagination and study the shit out of them.

I frankly don't know what everyone else is talking about: that picture from 2016 is really good, and I would hang it in my house if it were free. Certainly, however, it is not original: but with just a couple more tweaks to your sensibility and style (which you seem to be striving to achieve), I think you could make some really good things. Do you do anything other than still lifes? I realize the 2015 could be considered a landscape, but frankly it still strikes me as rather stiff for all of its affected flashy motion, and indeed I think it's the worst of that set.

I also think that there is pretty significant improvement between those four pictures (with a lapse in 2015), with the last being dramatically more engaging than any of the previous three. But what do I know? I am not myself an artist, and only come here to see what art the 4chan mentality has produced, with the fantasy of finding some hidden gem. That hasn't happened yet, but frankly I am pleasantly surprised even if the overall quality tends to be pretty poor.

Part two: https://a.pomf.cat/lbpbgr.jpg

In the last 2 months I've mostly been doing studies around flow and weight of my lines, force, better arm and leg anatomy without the crutch of a reference photo, and faces (biggest weak point), and in the next few months I'm aiming to work more on shading/painting with colour instead of values while focusing on lighting and more faces.

Man how do you just "get it"? Like I have been drawing for a year, doing studies all that and I still don't know how to better understand studies/books. got any thoughts on that?

>> No.2784298

>>2784229
I dunno man, I just try to think as analytically and 3D as I can while I learn so I understand my subject wholly. Also you gotta take a break from studies and do fun stuff from imagination so you can apply what you learn

>> No.2784530

>>2782923

Anon, speed as a product of comfort and understanding of a subject is one thing. If you know a subject well, you'll get quicker.
Speed as a substitute for patience is another entirely. The gesture drawing meme has got too many beginners rushing out half-assed drawings thinking it's going to make them intuitively understand something they don't understand. There's a place for quantity over quality, but it's a waste of fucking time to work on a philosophy where you're TRYING not to think about what you're doing. I guarantee you any gesture drawing worth a shit the artist has made decisions on, the ones who 'make it look easy' have just internalized a process. That means practicing more than just gesture drawing. It requires an extensive knowledge of form and anatomy so embedded in your brain (from THINKING ABOUT IT and PRACTICING IT DELIBERATELY) that it comes naturally. The only thing you make intuitive by deliberately doing sloppy rush jobs is how to make a sloppy rush job.

2016 was the worst year so far. I started getting lazier, to the point where I barely drew once a week and now I haven't drawn anything in months and I no longer find passion in drawing
Anyone else experiencing the same?

>> No.2784851

>>2784845

Not to that extent but I've had a few rut months where I regularly went several days without drawing.

The best I can suggest is rebuild a routine. In my experience a lot of the 'no longer find passion in drawing' is the standard 'I don't really feel like it right now' that comes out of a lack of a routine, and once you have a routine going again it's a lot easier to find the motivation. It's just the effort to get back in the habit.

I'm pretty disappointed. So much animeshit back then and I was pretty young so I was a dumbass but I've moved on from my weeaboo ways.
Now it's too much video games that I barely draw (digitally at least).

I think I draw better on paper though and drawing from my pen tablet feels pretty awful. I should replace it with a much better one.

Next year I'll self-study how to draw more realistic, how colors work, how to paint etc.

a better example:
the left (a commission) took me the better part of 4 hours because i got stuck on the anatomy for the longest time. constantly tweaked and re-sketched pieces of it for 2 goddamn hours.

the right was done for fun. took about 3 hours to sketch, color AND shade it. and it was overrall less painful. i even enjoyed myself. speed is nice

nice progress, you seem to have patience.
could define the contrast between the detailed and less detailed areas a bit more, but that's more or less a subjective matter

so here's mine:
might be an extreme example since these two are fundamentally different,
but it think it gets to the point..
the right one is still very rough, but it shows how I tried to use other ways of drawing than simply (turd)polished lines which already start with the details.

I have not forsaken this simple way of drawing, but only doing it this one way feels sluggish.

started very late with changing this somehow, but since I'm not in a hurry to gonna make it, I'm okay.. but could definately need some more self-discipline. feels like wasted time this way. I try to draw specific storys for like, years, and hardly get some shit done
