There you go.

I can't remember specifically, but way back there was some thread that talked about the "ruan jia" way of painting. Like someone translated an interview with another jia-esque artist and made a thread on it.
Probably in the bowels of the /ic/ archives.

It was tehmeh who primarily broke down Ruanjia's choices in his paintings iirc. But it's important to note it was done years ago so only applies now to Ruanjia's old artwork. Ruanjia's new work has taken a different path.

Well I wouldn't call tehmeh a shit artist, he's been painting and drawing for like a decade and is a working professional. It's not like he was making any big claims either, he simply was analyzing things like how Ruanjia uses edges and color in his work.

As for the workflow, there are many videos of Ruanjia painting so you don't even need to bother with guesswork.

It's hilarious when you post a picture thinking you are above everyone else, when really the picture shows nothing special.

Seriously, get off your high horse. I would LOVE to see your recreations of Ruan Jia's style. Oh wait...

Regardless, it would be more beneficial to attack Jia's painting in little pieces at a time. Like how he rendered an eye, or how he rendered a hand, or armor, etc and solely focus on that.. Over time you can pull everything together.

This is what I've gotten from the video,
1) He maps out most of the values first.
2) He adds colour on top of it (What layer setting is he using?)
3) Adjusts the darkest and lightest values to define the forms.

>>2767929
His base colors are added in a very broken color style, he leaves a lot of smaller patches of color to add visual complexity. The hues look different but the colors seem to be of the same value. He then goes in and breaks it up with linear contours.

Here's my WIP so far. Not done yet but I need advice on how to continue. Comments and discussion?

He sketches first and thinks about composition

Then he puts down solid blocks of value and uses a white or black brush (whichever is the opposite of the color he put down) to sketch out what he wants, and then colorpicks from the BG around it to refine the block-in. This guy has been drawing for so long (or has planned with thumbnails before the video) that he already knows exactly what he wants byt he time he's sketching. Either go do some thumbnails first or try to sketch out where everything is before you start your values. You need to make sure everything is in proportion.

When he puts color down he glazes it over. I'll see if I can find you something about that stuff but it comes down to having good values and then doing a color overlay, then painting on top of that.

Paintings should always progress all at one time like pic related. Big ideas first and foremost then you go down to the little ones.
