What are you after? If you want more realism in your work (I think in general /ic/ strives for that), then by all means you can and should make an effort to do better.

In either case, you have a lineage of artists who came before you, some of which might inspire you to move in a particular direction, whether it be realism or some other style. Their work (and anything they've written) can help you. You can always piece together a path of their work and who inspired them.

HKU isn't bad, it's good for people who want to be indie game designers(at least the game art program). Just wasn't really for me.
SARA, the atelier was one of my best decisions in life. It's a great school and the first year taught me insanely much!
I can't wait till I can continue in August! If you still want to try, the school is trying to make the DUO loan available. It's worth it!

I was planning on going to SARA, had visited and met Hans-Peter and Sanna, spoke to a bunch of students (this was during the time Miles was a student, doing some large oil painting of some girl with weird space stuff all around her) but after visiting the Florence Academy of Art studio and meeting Andreas and Stephen I decided it fit me better.

So I'll just add that anyone looking at these schools should make sure they look at and visit as many as you can to make sure you find the one that fits you.

okay you know what, sure why not.
its not the damn style. its just sloppily drawn.
the lineweight is all over the place, the clothing folds are just wobbly and incorrect (and that has nothing to do with style)
the worst offense is how bad the ellipses look. it looks like () rather than an actual ellipse. its just sloppy and lazy.
it looks like it wants to be something like omocat or something but just fails and feels like an off brand product of something you usally enjoy.
a style like this would greatly benefit from more details in some places (like the bones and clothing folds) and simple, round shapes rather than the sharp, messy lines here.
it looks like the artist just has no patience. i appreciate a good stylization and weebshit, but this is just so off and textbook tumblr art that it pisses me off, especially when the artist asks for fucking money.

lets go anyways though.
the frustrating thing is that it looks like you actually have technical skill but you cover it in droopy, unappealing crap. your linework is really solid, good consistency etc. but the face just looks awful. the red eyeshadow with the droopy red nose makes her look really ill. it just doesnt fit in with the rest of the picture, which looks a bit more realistic. its like putting a mickey mouse face (with a red droopy nose) on the body of a normally drawn mouse.
also there is something really weird about the hips and the wrists, thats mostly just anatomical stuff. it just has a really unappealing feel to it, i think the texture on the skin has something to do with it.
i feel like its supposed to be attractive, but it just turns kinda nasty looking because of the half hearted realistic stuff.

Line weight seems fine to me, if a bit sharp. And Im sorry but I have to disagree and say that the clothing choice to be wobbly as you put it, appears to be stylistic choice.
I do see where you're, coming from with the ellipses, but I really can say it breaks it.
And with using rounder shapes, I see where you're coming from, however, it looks like they're going for a more comic book style.

In my /honest/ opinion (which is something that my classmates probably agree with) the courses and teachers here are very hit or miss. Some of the classes have offered really insightful lectures and critique which have definitely affected how i think about art, while others feel like complete wastes of time/money (the school offers a decent amount of financial aid and I'm living off campus so the expenses aren't completely terrible though)

If anything I'd say that alot of the student improvement I see is pretty self-driven. There are only a handful of classes are instrumental to technical improvement and style development, with the rest devoted to either theory or industry-oriented subject matter.

Of course it is an art school, so just like any other school being surrounded by artists 24/7 + being forced to draw 24/7 + having a shit ton of resources at hand definitely helps improvement by a ton.

I feel like animation part could be because most TV studios are outsourcing the animation work to other countries now, and most feature studios have moved on to CG (we have more CG classes than animation-oriented ones), so the passion for 2D has somewhat subsided. There are still a handful of students whar are passionate about 2D and are pretty kickass at it though. (imo 2D animation is still a really important skill for everyone to try and hone though, because it definitely improves your understanding of design and form)

As for the courses that have helped me further my technical skills and "style", I'd say-
- Life Drawing. Our classes are 7 hours every week. Definitely helps a shit ton with observation and form.
- Character design. We've been really lucky to have a really good group of industry designers come and give weekly lectures about design principles.
- Layout. Just a class about drawing bacgrounds / perspective / composing scenes. Really useful.

Alot of people brand the school as a "story school", which is pretty understandable as alot of the courses we have are geared towards storyboarding / strong storytelling through art, and alot of people leave and become storyboard artists.

You can really get a comprable education by seeking out a mentor, or signing up for classes somewhere (theres a place called the Concept Design Academy in Pasadena for all you socal bros. It's kinda pricey but they have tons of great classes. All of the people I know there are learning a lot).

anyways we don't have an illustration class/illustration department at all actually. people here usually just natrually know illustration fundamentals because it shares alot of similarities with the things we're taught about design/rendering/composition.

as far as learning purely design/illustration, this school really isn't the best choice i'd say. This school is really good if your endgame is to work in animation (though a handful of alum have gone down other paths), but if you want to be a concept artist, or do entertainment design, or be an illustrator, go check out Pasadena Art Center and SVA. They make amazing concept artists and illustrators, respectively.

i completely agree regarding animation. if you can animate well 2d you can work so many different jobs. animation, design, and story mainly.

Why don't any of my posts show up on the search results when searching the tags I assigned them? I know the 5 first tags rule, but apparently none of these first tags appear on the results, also I noticed some of my posts where flagged as NSFW despite having no nudity in them. Same thing happened to me. Then stopped happening at random. After reading around on the internet and trying things out, I decided it's because I was a new account and tumblr has retarded rules for new accounts that make you basically unsearchable until you've liked/followed/posted enough. I've had to spam about 100 likes before I even showed up in search. Then I spent a couple posts under the NSFW filter despite being SFW and I never figured out why that was happening. I also assumed what you assumed, that I was randomly blacklisted or flagged or some shit. Then suddenly, after doing nothing in particular, I've went the last few weeks with my posts showing up as normal, as they should in searches. Tumblr's fucking weird. If you're a new account you're likely not flagged or anything, you just have to be active with posting/liking/following, and it should iron itself out.
