Bring us your roughs, your storyboards, your pencil tests etc. Talk about industry, schools, the hopelessness of it all, how we all gonna make it etc.

If you're gonna post animation that isn't yours give source or state that it isn't yours.

Keep shitposting to a minimum. Don't feed the trolls.

Kind of a weird question. If you mean in terms of learning it like a skill them yeah, just like with art or anything, anyone can learn anything with enough time.

If you mean like if some person who doesn't know how to draw was given a bunch of stuff to inbetween would they be able to do it? Nope. You gotta know how to draw and how to animate to properly inbetween stuff. Somebody who knows how to draw might be able to get the job done but it'd be difficult for them to inbetween properly.

This meme is pushed by non-animators and has got to die, the Superman cartoons had zero rotoscoping in them. The characters move in artistic arcs that read well, rotoscoping would not give you such results. That and rotoscoping a flying man would involve a more retarded amount of work than animating it from scratch.

That's the wrong way of thinking IMO. You're going to have periods of stagnation/uncreativity. I also think it's important to stylize while practicing realism/anatomy, or else you won't learn how to exaggerate things properly.
You should also watch a lot of cartoons/animations, storyboards, penciltests, etc. Lots of doodling in spare time.

Lots of time wasted.

Yeah, though you still need to do a lot of figure drawing in between. I went 4 months without it and a lot of my skill degraded, couldn't get as loose as I could before, couldn't exaggerate as much, etc.

It's actually immensely fun and useful to stylize figures while drawing them, it really helps you understand what connects where, and why.

Not trying to shill a shill a blog, this is a collection of work ive done for a month.
http://stoicribbonportfolio.blogspot.com

I need some guidance. Ive been stagnating trying to make a good walk and run cycle and at drawing people talking. I feel like I dont draw enough a day. I dont know what I should draw or the best ways to practice. I feel like I should be drawing at least a 100 figures a day.

I have no sense of timing. Like, no idea what good timing is in animation and im trying to find out reading the survival kit.

I only work in one layer, never a sketch layer. I dont see the point, since I can just go back and clean up a layer. But I know this is bad since everyone uses sketch layers.

I never copy or study reference because it used to be a crutch for me, and I was never able to draw from imagination. And im scared that ill become one of those people that copy's loomis all day long, but never improve. But I still see that my proportions and anatomy are still wack.

Help. And Im aiming to be professional animator one day. S\\

I can't find a good reply looking trough google and resources.
I look for a program that works well with key-animating. aka it werks with fast keyframes, like flash. Just looking for alternatives. Freeware or costy don't matter. Sorry if ruining the thread. (gif related not mine, made by Yoh Yoshinari)

>> No.2782765

Just learning to draw, with an end goal of making rule 34 animation shorts, is it possible to animate traditionally and color digitally?

I want to avoid flash because I think even professionally (Horse show) it doesn't look that good, I never liked how uniform digital linework looks either, hence the desire to do pencil.

What would I need to accomplish this (aside from talent). What programs would be best for me? Equipment? Is it a lost cause and I should suck it up and go digital?

-do walk cycles on the side view not on angles for now
-figure drawings and sketches of people will help "try hard on these if you can"
-draw shapes 2d and some 3d
-learn to trace on a keyframe with pencil and paper to build finesses, if you can do that without tracing even better so 1:1
-watch animation frame by frame of anime walk cycles or character acting. You can DL these some sakugabooru and study it

-learn the walk cycle phases
-simplifiy your figures "even stick figure will do" in your walk cycle so you can draw them quicker
-muck around with easytoon for animation to build flow http://www.flat2d.com/easytoon/Downloading.aspx

The answer is yes, it's godlike. Read and animate along with the examples and really try to understand what it feels like to animate. Norman McLaren once said "animation is not the art of drawings that move but the art of movements that are drawn," and it's a very important mindset to understand.

Because that's how centripetal motion works you flimflam. Forward Force + Downward Gravity = Arc.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHGKIzCcVa0&t=2m44s

In any case, this look much better this attempt, but as that other anon said, just common practice to "compress" your drawings down to only have your "focus point" viewable to the audience. In this case, pic related is all you need to show your animation enough without too much empty space around it. It just looks more clean and professional.

tl;dr: Either draw bigger to fit your native canvas size, or shrink the canvas size to fit your drawing/animation with little white space left.

Depends really.

if what you're making is a lot of movement/action like western cartoons, i'd go with simpler style but with more movement.

if it's something dramatic and not a lot of movement you can do how anime does and more detail but rigid motion on 3's/4's.

You should just work on fundamentals and apply your fundamentals towards animation. If you aren't applying the stuff you've learned, then no shit you'll turn out bad.

It's not so much that you should draw IRL stuff. It's more about applying perspective, anatomy, form, proportion, composition, etc.

I agree and disagree with you. Application of the stuff I've learned from studies sunk in for me, not doing studies 100% of the time. So feel free to attempt stylized stuff sometimes and find out your weaknesses.

It's not that learning realism or form will make you bad. Realism makes fundamentals easier to learn because all of the information is displayed. With it, you can easily shade or draw three dimensional object with ease. It's just that it won't be useful if you only sight-size with it and don't apply the stuff that you've learned from it into your art. You can apply subject matter easier if you use construction.

Sight-sizing is a useful technique, but it's ideal to use it to find mistakes or plan construction. I need to practice it more.

Like the general framing and intention for the facial animation. But yeah needs more frames for the movement and better constructed poses.

So practice more walk cycles and draw more life drawings to sharpen those proportions.

Keep it up the work.

It was obscure even when the site was up, and I doubt the few people who had it before the site went down bothered to bypass the trial expiry thing.

I did a 2:30 short in one file but I think it's better as a tool for doing individual shots/cuts of animation, not a complete suite. That's what stuff like toonboom is for. That said, here are some tips for any macfags who want to use it.

1. You can export an image sequence and import into krita to colour, or export an mp4/mov and import as a video layer into photoshop, or as a gif and drop into flash.

2. For audio, you just need mark out the times once which actually doesn't take very long, you don't really need to have the audio play every single time you want to scrub thru. You can open a file with quicktime and hit cmd-t to see a waveform which will help a lot, I went a step further and set up a script that plays them both from the start when I hit shift-return when I want to check how they play together. Check pic related.

3. You can group different files together with tabs and the quickest way to see them in sequence is to export them as video files then open one in quicktime and drag the rest into the quicktime window, you can also drag audio in while your at it.

Not going to get into the colouring/auto-inbetweening stuff cause there's no easy way to explain over text but it's probably easier to figure out yourself honestly.

Yes, i understand that i shouldn't put the cart in front of the horse, but there's surely something more important that i'm doing wrong here.

I think the most annoying thing is maintaining the right leg proportion. Not to mention while juggling between shifting the torso, and swinging the arms at the same time too. Question, how do keyframe animators handle loops in general? Ive always thought it would be 4 keyframes, two for standing and two for the lunge. And the rest is animated by the in between animators. But if a keyframe animator wants to express someone moving from one side of the screen to the other (not a loop) do they skip the keyframes for the cycle like its a loop and just have keyframes for the position of the body and leave the walk cycle to the in between animators?

This probably reads more complicated than it is.

In-betweens mode is for clean-up/coloring/tweening, you can basically ignore it (i would suggest you do) or click the frames on the timeline to make them squares which will let you colour without tweening, but you're almost certainly better off colouring in something else.

Your WEBM actually triggered one of my flashbacks.

Back in the 2000's I was meddling with Pivot stickfigure animator (the concept of autism made visual). There were those niggers that made these super smooth animations and I always wondered how they did it.

They simply said: Start the action super slowly, then move faster and faster, then finish the action slowly and smoothly.

I can see that the first 3 frames are really close, but they're crucial to convey a smooth and evenly timed pendulum movement, while the 7th frame is really separated from the rest, but that's when the action "speeds up" the most.

You just use the stationary walk cycle loop and scroll it across the screen (be aware that you have to move the character across at the same rate as the walk, otherwise their feet will look like they are sliding). That's only for a basic walking to the side animation, anything else like a front walk would require key frames for each step.

Sorry for the lewdness

But how does a keyframe animator handle this scene? Im assuming the guy and girl are each their own separate layer (A1, B1). But does the animator:

1) Animate the girls boobs and mouth expression as its its own layer on multiple pieces of paper, then go back to each frame and insert the guy's tit sucking?

OR

2) Draw the girl and the guy at the same time, and not fuck up the timing on one go.

if 2) i think im going to be btfo'd for how hard the timing is.

In action films, there's a lot of "off-model" material like stunt doubles, cameramen, and multiple vehicles used. You wouldn't be able to tell unless if you've looked at a single frame and compared it with the other ones.

Except I WAS able to tell, because that mistake (specially in an empty white background) was really noticeable because it lasted more than a second, but even if it had lasted only 1 second (24 frames) I would have noticed it.

Of all the things you can let slide in animation basic form and proportion aren't one of them specially in that case where breaking the form served no purpose and hurts what would have been an interesting and fluid action. your example doesn't even compare as the object (actor) is on model (accurate) when up close, while in the animation the model is inaccurate at close to mid range to the camera, and is the sole object on frame with no tricky camera movement involved, hence why it is so glaring a mistake.

You guys should add Don Bluth to the tutorials list. He's got a few videos on YouTube and he does workshops and he has an animation course on his website.

Didn't he kikestarter a new movie that produced nothing?

First off. What does that have to do with anything? Don Bluth is an ex Disney animator so he has valuable information to share.

Second. The kickstarter was to produce a short film that he could then send to a larger film company so that he can get his funding that way. He's working on the short right now, it's just taking a long time 'cause he's doing everything by him self.

Maybe use a bit more exaggeration. Right now it looks a little boring. Be more extreme with it.
