>Get layed off from job in construction
>Having a great time studying everyday
>Dad tells me to get my sleep schedule in order because he'll need me to help him install doors soon
>Say Ok
>Decide against doing studies for 2 days because I'll only forget it since I'll have to stay up for a night and a day
>Correct sleep schedule
>No longer feel like studying fundamentals anymore due to my day 1/2 off
>Had been going 5 hours a day for 2-3 weeks
>Have lost 20 hours of studying for a week
>Was going to jump to 8 hours a day
>Today have only done 2 hours so far, and I've barely learned anything

It might just be the fact that I'm not doing it how I want to. (2 hours of relaxation in the morning, 5 hours of studying, and then take rest of day off)

This also coincides with my disheartenment since I've realized I'm not learning enough about the functionality of anatomy.

Now I have to contend with the horrible urge to shitpost on /ic/ and play video games. I hope I'll get it under control by tomorrow.

How do you guys beat the dragon called laziness? I don't think I'll continue to study for the rest of the day. I still have to correct my sleep schedule some more.

OP here
I've already seen it.
I love how he's 30, and his art isn't even close to where it should be.

It's a great mistake to learn from.

Not OP but same problem with changing sleep patterns and schedules and getting study habits fucked up.
This is my first time back to /ic/ in a month cause it had been a distraction and I had started procrastinating again.

That vid reminded me of the mindset i need to get back in.

Thanks man. I'm gonna get off /ic/ now for another month hopefully.

I'm kind of curious.
What's better

5 hours of "fuck-off" studying married with music where you're not as observant/studious, or 1-2 hours of intense, focused working?

I can only do one or the other soon. I'm headed back to work in construction, and I don't think I could stay soon without music as I do art studies. The predominant issue with this is it detracts from my memory as I write, take notes, and draw anatomical details.

Has anybody done something akin to what I'm describing?

I'm thirty two and not even at this dude's level.

Not that he's at some high level, but that pretty much seals the deal for me. I was thinking it was over, but sometimes you need it put into perspective.

>he's 30
Doesn't matter.

>his art isn't even close to where it should be
I find his work to be inspiring and creative, but also for what he's going for it's very well executed, he does sprites for his game, he's not some illustrator at Wizards, breh, get real. You want to learn how to fix your problem? Draw. Its that simple. You just decide to draw and you do it. No self talking, nothing. Just do it.

If you think that you can do better, then you should. Putting other people down won't help you improve as an artist.

I'm not putting him down; i'm just saying the truth.

I never explicitly said he's making bad art, but he should be close to a professional's caliber by now. If anything, I support his video.

Since I was probably 10. Making comics has been all I've ever wanted to do.

But I did miss out on my 20's with depression and drinking a lot. And I mean, a lot.

Not that, that is some kind of excuse. Just whatever.

Work hard if you're young if you want to do something. Like anything. There's nothing like waking up every day and having to soak in your monumental failures and how worthless living is just because you procrastinated and did not work hard enough.

Thanks for telling me this.
I don't know how I would feel if I hit 30 and never accomplished what I really want to.

I'm terrified of it. I'm 19 right now, but you're giving me a lot of insight. I've already decided that my life will be totally meaningless if I never become a professional artist. I guess I'll keep working at it.

Different anon, here's what I've learned to help you out. What will help you advance the fastest is direction, you can't just want to be a professional artist, what type do you want to be? Concept artist, illustrator or fine artist? I recommend researching about your possible routes, maybe listen to something with Shaddy Safadi in it. And dude, if you're having a hard time learning something, you should look up Steve Huston. I learned perspective by drilling boxes and cylinders from every angle imaginable it's the fastest way to learn perspective, after that Scott Robertson's basic drawing. Remember that values are the most important part of a painting. Color is secondary to values. Painting in greyscale first is easier than going in with color. Dynamic sketching is how I improved my lines. Remember, you have to learn the rules before you can break them. Gesture, construct, refine. And your mindset should be more like that of a soldier, you say life will be meaningless if you do not become a professional, then draw as if your life depended on it. You've got to make art your obsession. Since you're 19 ,dude, don't sweat about not being able to do it yet, you've got to be ready to be an adult and it's totally okay if you'd rather have fun for now, just know that whenever you're having fun, another artist is practicing and whatever opportunity you could have had is going to be his. Oh ye and look at lots of paintings and figure out who your favorite artists are, this is very important, you need to have an aesthetic that you find pleasing. Good luck, op.

P.s. it's a good idea to learn one thing at a time and only compete with yourself. Your goal for now is to become a good artist.

Tl;Dr draw with direction, work on your fundamentals.

How do you guys deal with the regret over not having started earlier?

Ironically I found an /ic/ thread I saved where I asked for drawing advice and stated how I knew I will regret it if I don't start then. It was 3 years ago...

I know that rationally there is nothing else I can do aside from practicing but these self-hating thoughts don't go away. Especially when I have problems learning something. Seeing how great people my age and younger are just makes me feel terrible.

>> No.2718313

>>2718303
Don't worry about everyone else, just focus on your own progress. There's no point in regretting time gone, you will only waste time regretting the past. All that matters is now. Then follow this advice >>2718284
Good luck, anon, it's up to you to use your time more efficiently now.

YOU START NOW AND JUST KEEP GOING THROUGH THICK AND THIN OTHERWISE YOU'RE GONNA KEEP REGRETTING "if only I started this many years earlier" "if only I didn't stop for that year" "oh if only I had kept drawing all those months" "I wish I didn't give up back then" "I wish I kept drawing during those years" "imagine all the gains I would have had" "if only if only if only" "I wish I wish I wish"

You had a routine and you broke it, motivation hitting the shitter is pretty normal in the face of a disrupted routine.

It'll take little while to get a new routine set up, but once it is it'll get easier.

The 5 hours will get you mileage, if your goal is just to internalize things you've already learned that'll probably be better. If you know the theory and know you can do it, you just need to refine. Hammering out 5 hours is worth it.

If you're learning something new, the focused studying is better. You need to pay attention and hammer it in, after that you can grind it.
