2715456 No.2715456 [Reply] [Original]

I tried this once before with a small bit of success, let's give it another go and play a game together /ic/.

Open a movie, pause it somewhere (wherever you like, but don't make it TOO obvious), and draw it. Take as long as you want, it can be a 15 minute sketch or a long ass rendered out study. Others then try and guess.

I'll start.

Thanks, though I still think it's sort of sloppy and rushed even giving the time limit. It would have been better to try to do less detail and faux finish but rather work more on understanding and capturing the most important elements with precision.

Just keep working on it! Post it when you're done. Samurai flicks are really fun and the imagery is always some of my favourite. Also don't compare yourself to me, I have been painting for longer than most people on the board and I also think my work sucks too (most artists seem to hate their own work).

Thanks, great compliment there! I won't spoil the specific movie, but it's made by Akira Kurosawa so check him out. Basically all his movies are incredible, like every single shot in them is set up so perfectly and has wonderful composition. A lot of directors consider him one of the best of all time.

His movies aren't action films so much though, like they usually have a couple scenes in them with fights or whatever but that's not really what they're about. They're more about the story and how it builds or is told. Some people might find them a bit slow compared to today's films, but I find they tend to be really interesting and draw you into them. Just wanted to mention that so you don't go in with the wrong expectations and get disappointed.

Excellent use of time, there's no area where you seem to have gotten caught up, readability is A. Does the time limit stress you out sometimes or is it all relaxed? Do you spend considerable time with the pen off the tablet, mentally planning your next moves or is does it all come along as you go?
I immediatly get the crowd of people in turmoil in the back, in shade and in sunlight. Dat brushstroke efficiency. When doing studies, I love when something suddenly reads without being overworked, it's like you managed to create a little optical illusion.
The only thing I don't get is that drone/UFO in the back, just what is it? A flying shield?

Damn, big praise. I actually do have a tumblr I just haven't posted to it in a year, so, yeah.

>readability is A
That's my number 1 priority. I want the big picture to read as a thumbnail and scene. It means though I get bored rendering and only do so when I need to for a client. My personal work is all sloppy sketches (these are clean in this thread because I am using reference).

>Does the time limit stress you out sometimes or is it all relaxed?
Mostly it's relaxed. The time limit can be a bit stressful at times but I try to slow down even more when I notice myself getting stressed. I do my best to never feel rushed or paint rushed. So if this means taking a 10 second break to slowly drink a bit of water, I will do this if I need to remember to slow down. I'm also working very zoomed out the entire time which helps.

I try to just work deliberately and efficiently and I find I can hit the time limit. I'm actually more efficient on these than my ordinary work since I'm using layers and stuff here and it's all from reference so I can just put things down without much planning. I might stop using layers and clipping masks on these though because I think I'm losing sight of my natural way to make an image.

>drone/UFO in the back, just what is it? A flying shield?
Yes, it's a shield. I contemplated leaving it out but I thought it was hilarious to have in there. Like it's just so over the top, and I was imagining like a movie extra hurling a shield like a frisbee with all his strength to get it that high...yeah totally a natural occurrence in a fight!

Okay so I followed up with this by doing one that's all on one layer with only a hard round brush. I messed up the drawing pretty bad (time limit) and the colours were really tough to get since there were some really strange (but nice) skintones. More excuses: my eyes are tired so everything looks blurry. I'm posting this at a larger size than I painted it actually too.

I have some more questions though.
When picking colors, do you try to copy those in your ref or do you like up the saturation in places to make it pop? I see you using some really vibrant colors here, but that might just be the refs. When I try to copy the colors it mostly ends up looking too dull, in anticipation of that it might be wise to go overboard with it, I thought mabe that's what you do?
And since you mentioned client work, I have to ask. Can you live off your art?
Also, do you ever watch something other than samurai flicks?

>do you try to copy those in your ref or do you like up the saturation in places to make it pop?
I do both, it depends on the ref and what I am trying to get out of it. For the ones from Hero the colours are fairly literal because they already were very intense from whatever post production they did to it (if you see the movie then different parts are in different colours, it is very beautiful). For the 13 Assassins one the ref was a bit boring/dull/flat, so I added in hue variation into the sky with those texture brushes of a cool and warm grey on top of each other to create a vibrating faux broken colour effect, and I separated the two figures with a colour and value shift.

If your colours are dull and the ref isn't, then it's a painting problem. If the ref is dull, you might need to change it but that can be hard to do well without experience. Just cranking saturation might work, but might be a bad idea.

Colour has four components: hue, value, saturation, and temperature. If the colour is muddy or looks off it is probably either value or temperature that is wrong. When I approach a painting I think of each object's local colour then shift the colour/temperature slightly depending on each light source.

I do live off my art, but I am very poor and barely managing.

Of course I watch other movies, but I am picking ones that I like the aesthetics of, which happens to be samurai flicks a lot of the time. Plus it helps me learn for both client work and personal work, as opposed to like painting a scene of a woman getting into a taxi or something which I will never use. If you name a director (not a movie so that way people can still guess) I can do a study of it for you and it will give an idea on the colour stuff.

> I remember hearing that apparently Kurosawa's samurai flicks were pretty influential on a lot of westerns stylistically.
Yes I believe that the genre/character of the sort of lone wanderer (Clint's characters) can from Kurosawa originally. I don't know enough on filmmaking to know specifics of what influence was there in terms of shots, but I know Kurosawa did impact the Western genre. I quite like some spaghetti western type things, but I prefer Kurosawa...I once made the mistake of seeing Seven Samurai followed by The Magnificent Seven (the original) and the latter movie was literally like an identical shot by shot same thing but 100x worse somehow.

Wow it figures that when I decide to do a "demo" image it turns out really bad. I think I was more self conscious while painting this one because of it and that affected the outcome. As you can see the proportions are massively off and I only noticed when I put the ref and my painting together like this since while I was paintin I had them sort of diagonal which prevented me from comparing verticals and horizontals (dumb on my part if accuracy is the goal). The 30 minute time limit of this one started to feel a bit tight too which is not what I want to happen...it means i am focusing on a faux finish instead of accuracy and getting as far as I get, if that makes sense. Anyways, sorry for the excuses which I just said I would cut back on ahha.

Anyways, I the colours on this one were fairly simple since it's a desert scene which means most colour is washed out except for some warm bounce light.

Actually it occurred to me that I could just find the ref again on the older images to show how I changed the colours to that one anon. You can see when I put them side by side (remember I didn't paint with them together like this) the drawing errors are obvious and the colour differences too. Assume that about 50% of the colour differences are intentional, and 50% are me fucking up. In this one I wanted to not get the exact skintones but rather get that interplay of greys and purples in her skin, and also I wanted to emphasize that eye way more obviously and make it look nice and shiny and wet. I also wanted to do a more planar approach to the face instead of just blending things.

>>2720856
Nope! Very close though. I specifically didn't choose that one since I suspected it would be people's first guess hehe. The one I wanted to paint the most actually was a totally different western movie but the screenshots I found online were really complex or nothing at all like Kurosawa which defeats the purpose of doing this like that anon requested.

I am guessing that taking liberties like that comes with a certain experience. It sometimes bothers me how caught up I get in the details and trying to copy them exactly.
And it's especially hard when the ref looks really good. You can only make it worse.
It reminds me of something Alberto Mielgo wrote on his site about learning to paint by trying to capture his muses and he would try so many times to capture their beauty but always failed. I mean it's not as romantic but yeah, that's how I feel about good photo refs.

I'd be happy to do so if you will specify what you mean by "something different". Like subject matter? Lighting? You want something more contemporary? Or do you mean like maybe something less character focused? Something more complex?

>I am guessing that taking liberties like that comes with a certain experience
Yes basically. The more experience I get the more comfortable I am taking liberties.

> It sometimes bothers me how caught up I get in the details and trying to copy them exactly.
Stay zoomed out and use a big brush, and always think of the main forms and shapes. Detail is just icing, and sometimes cakes are better without too much icing ;) Maybe take note of which detail is important and what shapes need to be very accurate, then which are less important. On >>2720865 notice how I tried to get the shape of her eyebrow and eyeball in accurately, I included the shape for the tear duct, I got the ellipse of the iris in there, I paid attention to various edges, I put in the (emphasized) highlight on the eyeball. This is important detail in my opinion so I spent more time there, and detail like the little embossed designed on the sword handles I left out entirely or did some lazy indications. The pattern on the collar I deemed middle importance so I put one in there with a small brush but I just got the general impression of the pattern rather than copy every shape exactly.

That Mielgo quote has been said in many different iterations by many artists, it seems to be a common frustration. My goal is always though to have my painting be more interesting than the reference--otherwise what is the point? Photos miss out on a lot, so put in more edge variety, colour variety, remove excess detail etc.

Yes, that was my initial thought actually.
>something less character focused?
I don't mind characters.
>Something more complex?
Not necessarily, but I am not opposed.

I only saw two movies of her, but I was thinking of one in particular with great colors, since you said you were basically going to demonstrate how you handle color.
It's not exactly contemporary though, but her other stuff seems to be. So that's why I chose her.
So yeah, I don't even care if it's from Sofia Coppola, but something with nice, light colors or something more contemporary.

>lazy indications
Those sometimes look most interesting.
>My goal is always though to have my painting be more interesting than the reference--otherwise what is the point?
Maybe one can say there are studies in which you put in more than you take and some you take more than you put in.
If it's a master study, even of a photographer, I'd try to get down what appeals to me and hopefully internalize some of it.
When the ref is more dull and boring, there's more of an incentive to bring your own flavor into it and push it beyond what's there.
>Photos miss out on a lot, so put in more edge variety, colour variety, remove excess detail etc.

Cool, I will try to do it later tonight after I finish some edits on a painting for a client, or I might have to do it tomorrow. I've actually only seen one of Sofia's movies and it's one of my favourites so I might need to watch the others, though their summaries didn't appeal all that much to me. I was looking up screencaps of her movies though and I saw some interesting things in one (which I think you are talking about too). I'll try to do a more colourful scene maybe then, but as I said if the colours look good in the ref I probably won't need to change much at all so maybe it won't help you much.

>lazy indications sometimes look most interesting
I guess so, in the sense that they are more abstracted. But they also are somewhat of a shorthand unique to that artist, so probably will be the same or similar in a lot of paintings and almost formulaic. When I have to do filigree stuff I notice I always do similar curves and swirls when I know the actual detail won't be seen and it just needs some visual noise. I think they are most interesting when they're not lazily done but rather have design and thought put into them.

>Maybe one can say there are studies in which you put in more than you take and some you take more than you put in.
Yeah that's true, I definitely oversimplified when I said it should be more interesting.

>reminds me of the need to do more still lives/ painting from life.
Absolutely! Don't forget to study the masters too. Basically everything I am talking about and doing and trying to do has been done by others better before. Mullins has perhaps taught me the most through his Sijun notes and lots of time spent looking at his paintings.

Okay so I did one with a little more colour I guess. It's moderately complex since there are so many characters and local colours and there are some fancy marble things and different materials with lots of little shapes. It could be much worse though, I actually chose an "easy" one from the movie since the characters are kind of far away and the perspective is very simple. I went to 31 minutes on this ;)

On this one I just used a square brush and avoided any texture brushes or a ton of layers. I kept the characters and the background separate but that was it. This way I could paint fairly opaquely in colour blocks to show you how to think of the masses of the forms and when and how to change colours.
You can see I just was able to lay in some base colours for the shapes and didn't have time to render it out. My main goal is to get the basic setup there--I have each local colour that then I shift based on the various light sources. There is light from the right which is sort of diffuse but also directional, there is ambient light from behind us, then there is the big set of windows behind them (which has surprisingly little influence on the characters, like there are no rimlights but rather it seems to affect the floor mostly I guess because it is very ambient and also kind of far away).

To me the important thing is getting the colour temperatures right on each object as they change from each light source. Temperature is made up of hue and saturation, and remember that it is relative. So for thinking of colour, in a quick block in like this I try to get it maybe 80% accurate and then move on the other areas this way I don't get caught up in anything and can treat the image as a whole which helps too when everything needs to relate to everything else. If the entire thing is blocked in at 80% accuracy then you have a great base to then spend time on and glaze in more colours, fix anything that is too off, get subtleties etc.

Hope that helps a bit.

I tried it out after rereading your post. It was very fun and different, but the colour on this one were very unusual. I'm not even sure where the pink light is in the scene exactly haha. I love the mood of the picture though

Also I never have seen this movie but I plan on it soon. I watched on by the same director last night and enjoyed it.

>Don't forget to study the masters too
My backlog on paintings I want to study is huge enough that multiple people would have trouble working it off in their lifetime. It's terrible.
Do you do plein air painting?

I get the distinct feeling we had a convo in a recently deceased Mullins thread.

>>2721252
That's the movie I've been thinking of.

So rather than copying the abstract shapes, you copy the idea. Say, "a purple tailcoat with soft light from the right." and you'd also leave out everything that doesn't support this idea. It seems articulating your actions could help with doing a study like this.
Do you ever start with a drawing?
>Hope that helps a bit.
Yeah, thanks, always nice to hear/read someone's thoughts behind their painting choices.

>>2721281
Ah, I'm liking this one, I love unusual color/ lighting. Different indeed, that's what I wanted to see, and I appreciate you chosing smooth brushes for this, they seem to work well with the subject matter, has a slick look to it.
No idea what the movie is though.

No, I don't do plein air...I am bad at traditional paints and never spent the time to learn them properly. I've done plein air maybe a dozen times total, but not within the last couple years. It's a great exercise though.

And yeah I was the one who made that Mullins thread and I was posting in it a fair bit, so we probably did talk in there.

>So rather than copying the abstract shapes, you copy the idea. Say, "a purple tailcoat with soft light from the right." and you'd also leave out everything that doesn't support this idea
YES! This is it exactly. This way you get a more thorough understanding of what you are painting, and you can replicate it in your own work as well as have more control over the references you use. Of course looking at the abstract shapes too is important, but you don;t want to mindlessly look at 2d things, you want to be able to look at the 2d and then think of both the abstract shape and the form it represents at the same time. Maybe a bit hard to explain and a bit hard to do, but I think it is the best approach.

>Do you ever start with a drawing?
Yes, but not a detailed one. Typically it is just to get the proportions in there, so if I were doing that same scene from my imagination I would probably lay in a horizon line, do a few simple lines showing the pillars, then maybe do some gesture lines trying out some poses and getting the general proportions of the figures and their placement, and maybe a few lines indicating the major drapery. But it would be quite loose and have no detail really, just major things. I'm not good with digital lines, so I don't like to spend time on tight drawings, plus I find it boring to paint on top of tight lines since I feel like I'm just filling them in instead of actually painting. With reference it is easy to paint without lines, but then the problem becomes you might start copying 2d shapes and forgetting the forms if you're not paying attention.

Yeah Kar-Wai is cool, I had a friend who recommended him to me a lot, so I just watched Chungking Express a couple days ago and loved the look of it (was a bit thrown by the lack of plot but it grew on me), and I have to admit I still haven't seen In the Mood for Love yet but I plan on it in the next week when I have some time. The screenshots of it online are absolutely brilliant.

Yeah Chungking... first time I saw that I was gushing over it for weeks after. Similar feels I got from shit like Lost in Translation, Eternal Sunshine, and Her. Romantic dramas fill a void.

Speaking of which, if you haven't yet seen it, I think you'd really like The Double Life of Veronique.

The more I think over it the more I realize how much I liked it. I'm definitely gonna rewatch it in the future.

>Lost in Translation, Eternal Sunshine, and Her
I love all three of those! Lost in Translation hits the perfect feeling for me and I have seen it probably 4 or 5 times. Eternal Sunshine hit me really hard, and I want to rewatch it but need to make sure I'm emotionally solid first. Her I liked quite a bit, though the ending was kind of weird.

>The Double Life of Veronique

Wew so I was busy all day at my mom's place and couldn't do any art until I got home late tonight, but first I wanted to watch In the Mood for Love. It really blew me away, and so even though it's been guessed already I had to do another one from it. I'm a sucker for super saturated reds, so I couldn't help but paint one of the scenes with this brilliant red colour. This one was tricky, mostly the angle on the face (my draftsmanship is not up to par it seems), so I needed to take a bit longer and it took around 45 minutes. For anyone that wants to watch the movie, it's available in full on youtube, just click the cc at the bottom for the subtitles:

For this, mostly hard round, some soft round.
Block in with pen pressure set only to flow, further rendering with pen pressue set to flow & opacity, so it's not as opaque, handy for blending.
A little bit of round with wet edges, which is nice for sharp edges. It was a default that also had some dual brush settings, so a bit of texture going on, but nothing you could see at the size I used it, so it may as well have just been round.

tl;dr good old hard round
