I very much recommend going out into nature once a week to do a plain-air. It sounds old fashioned, but the difference is drastic, it really helps you understand landscape in it's layers and forms instead of just memorizing diagrams 'n shit.

sure, doing plein air paintings is great, but I don't see how this is an either or situation, especially if you do plein air paintings once a week. If this happens do be your plein air day and you are just getting ready to go outside, feel free to come back and do these studies at any other time during the week.

I'm extremely new at this, but it seemed like good practice so I gave it a shot.

I couldn't really find a good place, so I just picked one from the "photo of the day".

I tried to keep it all within 30 mins.
Greyscale because I don't want to get too complicated right now.

I don't really know what the fuck I'm doing with the brushes. I just have a hard round brush at like 30% opacity (I'd love to have some advice about this).

I'm going to do this activity every day, hopefully there will be some progress.

Here's the original.

Like I said, I'm extremely new at this.
Figured it'd be fun in between studying the other basics.

Sorry man, it's hard to slow down after hours of drawing shitty OC sonic characters.

I'll try harder for you next time.

maybe try using a larger brush to set up he shapes rather than drawing it in with a small brush?

No problem, glad to pass on /ic/ wisdom. Another thing you have to train is your eye for judging values.... which is hard as fuck for anyone starting out. Good luck. Don't get stuck in the details if you're just doing a value study. Call it what it is and do no more - you have plenty of time to make fully rendered & detailed pieces.

I think you are still in a "draw" phase and you have to understand the difference beetween actually "draw" and "paint"

These are really nice. Maybe try pushing the colours and lighting a bit more. They seem kind of "dead" colour-wise I think because you are just copying a photo. In real life there would be a lot more richness and variety in there. Also the stylized way you are painting the shapes tends to be paired with stronger colours in most cases, so they look extra drab here.

>> No.2683940

>>2683884
Thanks. Yeah, you're right. I tend to pick too desaturated colors when studying photos.
