Anyone here have a collection of art books?
If you've always wanted to have own an art book, Studio Ghibli's official "Art of" series are great if you're fond of their films. Get one from the movie's aesthetic you liked the most. All of the books show concept sketches, screencaps, and background art. Tooons of background art, in fact I'd say they're the most prominent feature of all official art books by Ghibli so if you're a fan of that, I recommend it as well.
This video flips through the pages of one of them, Princess Mononoke.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybRRteYt9RA

Also storyboard books. If you've ever wanted one, look up if your favorite movie has a storyboard published and buy that, it's like you're watching the entire movie in book form. The storyboards for Wolf Children is fantastic, and also of any Ghibli movie, they've published the storyboards for pretty much all picture films they have. Pic related, storyboard books are thick and medium sized, lots of pages.

Most of these aren't rare and are pretty easy to buy online, they're not too expensive (I think). It's really worth having a physical copy of them and Christmas is in a few months, so treat yourselves. They make a great addition to collections and are perfect for those who want to buy their first art book.

Where are you getting them from? I'm interested in Ghibli storyboard books but they seem to need to be bought from Japan and seem kind of expensive, like you can only buy used and they are still like 50 or 60$ each.

I actually bought a Ghibli storyboard from a bookstore called Kinokuniya, they sell lots of artbooks. See if you live near one http://www.kinokuniya.com/us/index.php/fho003

You can also order from their store, for ex. this Marnie storyboard is $44.95, don't know about the shipping though. Search "storyboard" in their search (and also the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" section) and you'll find more options.
http://www.kinokuniya.com/us/index.php/fbs003?common_param=9784198638351

I'm also seeing results on eBay, they can range from $30 to $80. I guess it depends on what movie you want, some are more difficult to get than others. Is there a specific one you want?

Most of his brushes are textures (patterns). Thats basically it... You can make them yourself very easily by downloading/scanning watercolor textures... infact, Kyle is so much of a hack he doesn't even fix the seams in the textures he uses.

You're giving free gold to idiots who won't even make use of it, they'll just stare at it, go wow, and never actually get better at art.

It means more artists are going to just copy paste his appeal without understanding why he does what he does, they cheapen it. Anyone who buys it probably respects his work enough to actually try and understand what he's doing.

>> No.2705941

> It means more artists are going to just copy paste his appeal without understanding why he does what he does, they cheapen it.

So what if people copy his appeal? Isn't that what artists do? Steal, copy, and apply it to their own work? If there's anything here that I should be wary about it's about people trying to withhold knowledge from others.

Stop trying to generalize people: Scanned or not there will be people not able to use these materials here in its full potential, while that is true, surely there will be also some able to do so. Same goes to understanding shit that he does, some will understand, some will not, either scanned or not.

Lastly, stop trying to enforce your "its going to cheapen his art/they'll cheapen his art" shit on us, goddamned elitist capitalist. This should promote his art even more, and cement his influence even more on future artists. If anything that gives the opportunity to understand the artist more and appreciate his work more.

TL;DR: FUCK OFF.

>> No.2706018

>>2705683
>It means more artists are going to just copy paste his appeal without understanding why he does what he does,
This is not how anything works.

Studying other artists wont make you identical to him/her. There is nothing wrong about copying other artists, it's one of the best ways to improve, and to say it cheapens the quality of the original artist is just delusional.

A person "copy pasting" Yoshinari's sketches wont become a Yoshinari copy-machine. The artists brain will pick up things from him, and apply the information in varying ways. Yes, the style will be SIMILAR, but not the same.

>Anyone who buys it probably respects his work enough to actually try and understand what he's doing.
This is purely anecdotal.

its gonna get scanned sooner or later anyway so get fucked lol

this board has given out so much valueable shit in the past, stuff created by absolutely brilliant artists now available for everyone at no cost
whether or not they make use of it is their own fucking business, the gains or loss are their own

It isnt nice to generalize, some poor fuckwit on this board might be really in need of a resource that he just cant get a hold of. Maybe its too expensive, maybe its not available in his shitty 3rd world country.
If people like you keep holding back on sharing valueable stuff cuz "hurr muh misuse" then our poor little d/ic/ks are never gonna improve.

Also if you think Yoshinari is so great then why do you try to supress the distribution of his work? And dont give me the "hurr it'll cheapen his work" shit cuz that is entirely fucking false. LOOMIS doesnt get any less respect from us even though most if not all of his books are available for free.
Art reference books dont suddenly lose value if they arent stuck behind a paywall.

Spread the work of the artists you like so that they inspire more people and yes that includes giving their shit out for free.

>everyone should buy it otherwise the artist will lose money
Nope its actually the other way around. If everything has a price then most people wouldnt even bother making the purchase because they will be unsure how useful the resource might be and if its really worth the money. However if something is available for free and a lot of people get into it i can 100% gurantee you that people who genuinely like the stuff will invest in it anyway therefore supporting the artist + it'll give the artist a fanbase increasing their popularity making their future products more successful.

Sharing is caring, and knowledge shared is knowledge multiplied. What youre tryna do is supress knowledge, that will do nothing more than create more retards such as yourself.

TL;DR go fuck yourself

Hello, anons. Serious question: Is Betty Edwards' "Drawing on The Right Side of The Brain" really worth reading or should i just skip it and go read Loomis etc.?

Keep in mind that i'm no total beginner and have drawn as a hobby ever since i was a kid. I'm on the part where she starts talking about negative spaces and i'm just feeling like i'm wasting time, as most of the shit she talks about (picture planes, edges, the whole "draw as you see" thing...) i've already learned intuitively just by drawing and i do not possess the materials her exercises require. I find myself doing the things she asks less and less and realizing i already know it more and more, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Right now, i'm thinking of either reading through it faster so i can start Loomis already or just skip it entirely. What do you guys think?
