Show me your gestures! Study, draw from refs, give critiques etc.
Try to draw the energy itself rather than the forms. This is a bit like your signature, 'cause there are no rules, just recommendations.

>Bonus points if it's martial arts!
>More bonus points if it's drawn from video observation instead of a pic

2 minutes is far too long for a gesture. Those are figure drawings.

A figure can have a nice gesture, but a figure is not in itself
a gesture. It's about quickly getting the movement and idea down. The term is simply widely misused by many artists.

Read this. And Vilppu, when you get the chance.

You're right, anon. I was thinking of the very basic gesture. It was wrong of me to say that you can't go over 2 minutes.

I was focusing too much on the wrong things, such as how spending too much time can make you lose track of the initial movements and start constructing or adding too much detail.

If it takes someone that long then it takes them that long.

Depends. If you're a beginner, you should do them fast to avoid overthinking. Vilppu doesn't have that problem, so he can do gestures almost like a meditation.

Not that anon but vilppu still emphasis that gesture isn't about speed. Regardless of what other sources say I'd rather trust vilppu.

>in practice

Take a moment and ponder what that means. In practice means In the God damn classroom. When you are drawing for yourself nobody is looking over your shoulder.

The Gesture gestapo isn't going to bust down your door for going over 30 seconds. You aren't competing for the gesture Olympics. In >>practice<< means in the classroom, with a live model, exercise, warm-up; to draw without fumbling about accuracy or line placement, to let go about mistakes.

Take my advice for your sake: learn to think critically about things.

After you learn to hold your pencil, control it and draw long lines with confidence. Call me a faggot but I found Hampton's explanation of gesture to be more helpful than Vilppu's, especially if you're starting out. He seems.. more systematic.

>>2652101
What do you mean by other sources? That picture is taken straight out of Vilppu's drawing manual.

>>2652109
I don't know about your experience, but from what I've seen and tried so far, beginners almost always struggle with simplifying. If you give them enough time, they'll start drawing short strokes, contours and details.
After you learn to simplify the form, too much/not enough time doesn't play a role in the quality of your drawing.

>>2652119
I honestly don't know what your advice is, the 30 secs is just a recommendation for beginners to learn efficiently.
Besides, there isn't much difference between a classroom and learning on your own. If the teacher knew the students need more time, he'd give them more time.

>> No.2652545

>>2652305
>from what I've seen and tried so far, beginners almost always struggle with simplifying. If you give them enough time, they'll start drawing short strokes, contours and details.

To properly simplify requires you to analyze what it is you are trying to simplify, otherwise you are just scribbling in a hurry. If you never take your time to think about the simplification process and the rhythm of the body you are trying to find, then you will never understand how to do it and all those 20 second gestures are doing is reinforce your mistakes and bad habits over and over again.

>> No.2652589

>>2652545
I think I see your point of view, but can't agree with what you're saying. When analyzing,
>your brain notices the big shapes first
>moves on to analyzing the smaller ones
You shouldn't allow your brain to get to the second step - by not giving it enough time to manage both steps. That way you only capture the essense, the big story.

Obviously you don't need the time limit if you can stop before the second step on your own, but you can't do that until you train your brain at simplifying form.

About reinforcing your mistakes and bad habits - you should always, always analyze your drawings afterwards for any mistakes, no matter how good you are. That's a general rule.

Not bad, but it's more a figure drawing than a gesture drawing, you might find it very difficult to invent a pose from your imagination using this technique.

When doing a gesture, try to work more abstractly, draw the relationships of the forms instead of the forms themselves. Muscles of the leg don't work separately, they work in a single motion with a purpose of hitting that motherfucker as hard as possible. Think about where did that leg start moving from and don't break that motion and continuity.

Sure, if all you ever do is quick warm up scribbles where you only define the spine and the limbs. But I doubt there's much to be learnt from that after a certain point Proper gestures are far more than 6 lines and require a lot more thinking. I feel like a lot of people love to oversimplify what they deem counts as gesture because then they don't have to think critically about what they are drawing and just fall back to this "It's just a gesture" excuse.
