>What should you be practicing?
Whatever you're weak at. Don't just draw aimlessly, draw with a purpose. Think and analyze what it is your doing. look at your favorite artist's works and try to understand their work flow, their thought process (or better yet, some of them will talk about it via blogs, podcasts, or videos); Why did they place that line there, why did they draw it the way they did, is it effective? Why or why not?

>Are the meals and exercise necessary?
Yes, if you want to be an Energizer bunny. Getting good is the main goal, but it shouldn't come at the cost of your heath. Don't neglect your body!

If you look forward to Fridays to go out and hang out with friends, it's time to cut it. If you play excessive amounts of video games, its time to cut it. If there are people in your life that would badger you into doing anything other than drawing, its time to cut them too. Mitigate any activity that isn't drawing.

If you're employed than that means its only going to be even tougher. If you cut the exercise you're going to feel exhausted, both physically and emotionally. If you cut the practice it'll take you longer to reach your goal. If you're working it just means less "pleasures" in your life; You'll need to find your own balance.

It all depends on what art means to you and what you're willing to do for it. Practice, practice, practice and draw from life.

Good luck, Anon.

He seems to have been a slow learner. I looked him up on Gelbooru, and his pictures go as far back as 2008. Back then, his art was awkward and stiff, but still quite a bit above average. Even at that level, it seems to have taken him years to achieve the more natural looking style he has now.

Same here. Another thing I feel MUST be said is a PROPER SLEEPING SCHEDULE. Compared to when I go to sleep at 10 at night, my productivity for when I sleep in the AM is shite. The day is shorter to me, I wake up later, I have much less energy and will and desire to draw. Waking up in the AM however nets me with a resolve and a really, really long day. Wake up, exercise, breakfast, draw, break, draw, lunch, and by then it's only like 1PM.

Sleeping well is important.

Krenz has a zip full of studies he has done here http://cushart.deviantart.com/art/study-by-Krenz-417688926?q=in%3Ascraps%20sort%3Atime%20gallery%3ACushart&qo=0 so look through that and you can get an idea of what he practices
Drill the fuck out of turning boxes in space like this https://youtu.be/mk84EpHmZKQ Krenz has a great sense of intuitive perspective, similar to Kiim Jung Gi. Focus on getting a very fish eye look.
Read Scott Robertson how to draw, this will show you how to put objects inside the boxes that you got good at rotating through space. Krenz doesn't do as much measuring and making things perfect as Robertson but he uses the same principals. Read the dynamic bible by Peter Han, it will show you how to do looser more organic forms.
Do anatomy studies, these rely on the previous two things I mentioned. The study pack has a bunch of studies by Krenz so make sure to study it all. Hampton would be good to study to get nearer Krenz's style.
Do photostudies and master studies, Krenz studies impressionist stuff for colour, Alphonse Mucha studies for shape design and Frazzetta studies for chiaroscuro (breaking the picture down down to two values). To paint like krenz keep you values high key and low contrast, saturation low and get tons of hue variation, heres a tutorial on Krenz's process( he probably doesn't use it exactly the same way all the time)
Also do lot's of hair/ drapery studies, I'll post some of Krenz's tutorials on the subject.

Krenz(along with other asian artistd like Kim Jung Gi) focuses on proportion and perspective a LOT in his figure drawing, something Vilppu or Huston would tell you is too technical and complicated. And thats why chinks are such masters at these things, they can get the boring and technical shit down instead of just "feeling it" all day and needing reference 24/7

There's a stream with Krenz's entire class on some chink website, ill post it later.

So don't do still life. You can do life drawing, master copies, even photo studies. Or set up a still life that is actually interesting, maybe with some different materials or cool objects or with interesting lighting.

Vilppu has probably drawn enough figures to populate an entire country by now. Im sure at his level he can draw anything under the sun from his imagination.

But he was also with Disney with all the refs and resources you could possibly get, im just saying youll improve a lot faster if you used more technical and perspective heavy methods

>> No.2645309

>no need for perspective and proportion

So basically just draw in 2d... wtf

I think what they mean by that is measuring isnt as necessary as it is with solid objects and its much more intuitive to just feel it out. rather than measure every single bone and arm... I think a mix of both is good. gesture out your figure feeling through it like vilpu then when you are getting to adding form just adjust anything that looks wrong by measuring it.

Krenz just understands the science behind constructing things when he draws. If you don't learn how to do that, then you will never reach his level. If he wants to draw something, he constructs it with techniques that are fundamental in creating his pieces, he doesn't have a "routine" in drawing a specific thing if hes never tried it before. Honestly its a lot of bullshit that I'd like to know about. A process video or something would be great to see. I'm fucking garbage at color and I can't find any good books about painting techniques and so and so. It's not that I don't understand the fundamentals. Coloring is just confusing to me, even if I get how colors relate to each other and react to light and reflections.

Some colors "just work together" depending on color wheel spots. some colors are "just good looking", sometimes IT JUST WERKS. and that's pretty much why I'm going to never ever make it to ovopack ever

Anon I know you mean well. I know you really do.
But this idea that you have to practice all day everyday to get good is just wrong and needs to be stopped spreading around here to people.
You eventually burn out and get diminishing returns on your practice and your brain has a limit on how much work it can do to get better in a day.

Practice for a few hours a day tops. Don't exceed this.

I would not recommend cutting out your actual life to get good at this or anything else to anybody. It's not worth it in the end if you do that. Nothing is worth it in the end if you do that. You need to have a life to be happy and not having a life while also being good at this won't make you happy

I think it's mostly because the values are fucked, it's about the same tone for most of the pic but there are these big white areas that grab your eye but aren't anything important, like the background and a reflection on the characters knee. The artist needs to understand what a focal point is because the characters where you should be looking have the least detail and contrast in the image.

using measured perspective for a figure is impractical, all of the shapes in a human body are tilted in various ways, working out exactly how they are tilted and how they should foreshorten would take ages and cover your page in guide lines. Loomis shows something like it in figure drawing for all it's worth but no one uses this in practice, I think he was just illustrating a point. The most you use this kind of perspective for in figure drawing is to work out characters heights at different distances.

>> No.2661771 [DELETED]

>>2661765
>but no one uses this in practice
Yeah you're a no one a nobody. Every artist worth their salt knows perspective is used in drawing the figure. Krenz draws to a grid but he is still formally measuring scale so everything is placed right in the correct distance.
>would take ages and cover your page in guide lines
it would take ages to keep erasing your errors and wonder why everything still looks like shit because you avoided perspective in the very beginning which would have saved you time and frustration.

Technically speaking, he is correct. Several studies have proved that you can only learn so much in one session and the best way to recover so that you can have another study session is to take a break for a couple hours.

i know he isnt doing figures but a lot of what he says carries over

also what sort of helped me was that i only view the torso as a box, rest are cylinders and egg shape for head.
you apply the knowledge of anatomy and perspective and you get the image going

Dont be a slave to the box tho, its only there as a guideline, a sort of a perspective tool. For drawing figures you still need to learn your way around anatomy.
Learn to see simple shapes in things.
Also useful: constructing boxes around already existing figures. Just take a photograph and try putting a box around it so that it makes sense in your mind, then redraw that using those same guidelines. I hope that helps.

Now please share

From what I can see, the wrapping lines are always dark or light, never part of the local midtones. They also tend to be more saturated than the local color. They're mostly used for highlights or extending shadow areas. He seems to be very carefully applying them to add subtle highlights, but only where it fits the form - you'll notice that there's always a direction to them (which should be counter to the form, as with regular shading, to not flatten things), and when highlights (and especially rim light) follows the form he doesn't hatch them, just paints them in normally.

They can also be used to hint at bounce light.

For how they're done, they seem to be painted over soft shaded forms (really obvious in the collar of the middle character in >>2680351 ), though this isn't a consistent rule as they're also used along with hard edges to emulate "soft" shadows (like in the curves of the gas mask). But he'll generally stick to soft, much more careful transitions when handling delicate areas such as the forms of the face.

Lastly, this one might be kinda self-evident but there isn't a lot of thickness variance between the thickest and thinnest hatches. Hatching on the face is thinner and denser, but in a subtle way.

I'm not sure what you want. His shapes all make sense based on the existing anatomy of the body. Maybe study some anatomy textbooks for a while until you know the structure of all the muscles and bones, then return to Krenz to see how stylize and use perspective.
