Don't worry everything looks bad

Draw what you see not what you think you see. Eyes aren't ovals with circles inside

Hair is the ultimate test against the so called symbol drawing. If you don't think in shapes of value/hue you'll never get it

There's a beginner thread too

First time I tried portrait I copied an already completed sketch.
It gave me an idea about shadows and shading.

copying drawings is absolutely pointless unless you're looking to learn another artist's style

When it comes to hair, less is more.

Try to successfully communicate what the hair is in the least amount of lines possible.

Learning shadows and shading from another artist isn't copying their style.
Most portraits sketches have the same principles

you'll learn a lot more from making your own observations from real life or from photographs rather than from studying bottom of the barrel celeb portraits from deviantart

Work general to specific, get the general shape of how it fits around the planes of the head with value, dont draw every strand, you don't need much for it to be understood as hair but going too far is easy.

Get better photos. with a single light source meant to draw from, not like this but it shows planes, simply i think.
