Thanks.

Maybe it's the shitty brand I'm using but it takes literally days to get them dry, with acrylics I could mix everything on the pallette and do very little of it in the canvas, here is a bit more unpredictable because it is always wet so things can get muddy very easy.

Pic is a Juniper bonsai tree study I just started with .5 mechanical pencil.

Value range is too low compared to your ref, maybe desaturate your ref if it helps you to see values. This probably sounds less interesting to others than it does to me, but I'm slowly building up a sort of horror themed "universe" that I would like to eventually have a story take place in. I've got a huge frothing boner for witches and in general spooky things that live in the woods and I also subscribe to the idea that the less you show the better. So this is supposed to be the second of maybe 4 pictures that will be related to eachother in that they will depict the main elements of this story I'm slowly working on. This one will be of the witch. I wanted to have a spooky image that implies there is something supernatural going on so I thought a sword piercing armour is nearly impossible for any human so a viewer might wonder about it. My initial idea was to have you see a strange reflection in the water (which I haven't put in yet) like that of a floating female figure, but I'm not sure if it's going to work so I'm shopping a couple of different ideas, I might have her hand gripping the sword or show some other part of her, like her feet as she's standing over the body... but I've already done that twice now in other pictures so I'm not sure yet.

tldr: blaah

You should move things a bit if you want this to be a great comp. You seem to be going for a steelyard, so embrace it and use the characters to balance the light zone; you should probably widen the canvas for this to work.
Else, you can remove the characters and make the canvas more vertical to put emphasis on the light.

make stronger decisions about background/midground/foreground heirarchy (and within each of those, the B/M/F heirarchy) and adjust the alternation of your values accordingly. Other than the sunlit patch, right now it all blends together. One of the two sharpest points of contrast is the (pine?) tree on the right against the almost-black trunk. what is special about this tree? how is it more special than the aliums walking in the distance?

>>2606237
Mercenary.wip. emphasize the edge of the stock nearest the viewer, right now it looks like she's holding a cutout of a photo of a gun. Find a way to get some warm colors in there so the fatigues aren't so dull.

>>2606116
More form, less rendering. Skull is squashed and his right eye socket is way out of place. Value organization is all over the place and it looks muddy/doesn't read well. Easiest way to fix: do bridgman studies and draw from life a fuckton.

>>2606083
Your initial block-in is too detailed and the values aren't arranged well enough. You're working up the image unevenly. I feel like the apple reflections in the copper could be just ever so much more distinct. Pretty solid though famalam.

>>2606061
noodle-bone on the his left leg is really awful and distracting. Much less distracting but still of note: the lines on the fabric don't communicate form, they just look like "this is fabric so it needs lines". Area of infection connection to body also is a bunch of indistinct lines, though how you handle coloring might make up for it. I like it, it's fun.

kek'd. Good point, I actually posted without any means of looking it more critically, my lines were all over with dull 2B.

I would say that your biggest issue is keeping it all together. Now forehead and darker values on chin make it somewhat patchy. I would go with either really tight contrast or the opposite, smoothed out with endless darker values.

I enjoy the challenge of painting stuff like this all from scratch, plus I think you lose something when you strive for utter realism and achieve it. I like to refer to this artist, Aron Wiesenfeld because he's clearly trying to paint things as realistic as possible but because of his own internal bias (that we all have) the leaves and brush come out looking slightly surreal, like there's something off but you don't really know what it is. Not the guy you're critting, but I wouldn't go that far. There's definitely suggestion of form on the weird head thing. It could probably be pushed further and exaggerated a bit more to make it read better, but to say there's no form or light and shadow is taking it too far.
The body is another story and I will admit that the hatching doesn't consider the form as much as the head. The image could potentially look quite interesting if the head were to be super detailed and the body much less so.

How is that infected thing even attached to him, on linework? It has no weight or balance. I'm having real trouble on finding any proper form or shape aside from hands.

i did plan it out. i did a bunch of prep paintings. with the paintings concept it's hard to make them all grounded i haven't figured that out yet. And there's probably an iteration of this kind of three figure i can do where the two men on the side are even more skewed which would make them float even more.

Anyways, I rendered out the background more does anyone think this grounds the figures more? I can't add shadows under the figures unfortunately it wouldn't work with the concept :(

i feel like that's something i could've fixed if i had left some of the figures unfinished. i think if i do something similar i'd do it from photos and lean harder into a scattershot, cluttered composition. a lot more figures, and a more finished background. hard to experiment with live models it can feel a little rigid cause of time restraints.

something that might help is doing master studies of renaissance artists. they could hatch loosely but be incredibly accurate. might be a good exercise to just draw a few of them as quickly and efficiently as you can cause those guys could a strand of hair halfway down the page with a wrick flist and still make it smooth and aesthetically pleasing

But as for your picture, Apart from pointing out anatomical problems (there are lots so much so that you need to stop trying to draw cool things before you can draw period) You'll have to be more specific when posting something like this, maybe ask for advice on the design, etc but be specific. people are much less inclined to respond if they know they can't be brief.

blood in the water should be a good indicator of depth ect. as it can be on the surface whilst also changing hue and value as it gets deeper down .
right now it feels like the water is not level. i dont know if the sword is propping up the knight so he is not fully submerged via the angle.

try buffing out some of the detail you have put into the rocks .

The old one is not better than the new one, trust me. You've improved on your symmetry and anatomy a lot within that span of a month, and your color blending is better too. Your old one just uses more appealing colors than the new one, I'd suggest shading with colors that aren't just a darker color of the base color, that'll make your picture stand out more. You should also try focusing a little more with just small details too, especially with D.Va's hair. Nice job overall though.

>> No.2609153

Most of the issues I'm seeing are with facial proportions.

-The face is divided into thirds, Hairline to brow line, brow line to bottom of nose, bottom of nose to bottom of chin. The mouth sits about 1/3rd down from the nose while yours is about halfway.

-The bridge of your nose is very thick and lacks definition (it's flat). While this is more typical of true asian features, it also makes her look more manly.

-Your eyes are too far apart, there should be one eye of distance between them. Eyes should also align with the corners of the mouth and the distance from ear to ear should be roughly 5 eyes worth.

-Lastly, I'd add a stronger definition under the bottom lip (your last shadow zone) because the shadow is too light and wide all over, which makes your lips look flat (and again more manly).

If you feel you might be going backwards anon, I'd ask you what you think you're doing. There's no going backwards in my experience, only dropping crutches and stepping out of comfort zones. That's actually a good thing as long as you can recognize your weaknesses and work on them.

Your rendering has improved (aside from the weird round brush highlights on the hair), it's just the proportions that are more off and likely making your previous picture more attractive to people. But if you don't know what you're doing with proportions then you haven't gotten "worse" at anything, it's simply something you haven't mastered yet.

hey dude i did some redlining for your artwork. Unfortunately i dont draw animoo so excuse my lacking stylization, but there are some things id like to point out to (You).
First of is a pose, i couldnt figure out what expression you were aiming for so i gave her that suprised , leaned forward look more than gonna-fall-off-the-rock-in-a-second one. Your piece looks like you didnt even bother to sketch the whole piece out before jumping into inking; always do that if you are not experienced enought (see Kim Jung Gi). Dont be afraid to go messy (see my red underdrawing). My inking is still pretty sloppy since i used regular photoshop brushes, but if you want to go for cleaner inking, use Adobe illustrator or sai or somethig more fit for the job (google inking tutorials for said programs). Learn about line weight and how to use it.
However i would recommend you go to the beginner thread first and get to the real basics (i mean loomis and shit) since your anatomy and sense of space is really lacking. Draw real people first since anime characters are based and influenced by them, it will help you greatly.
Also, "read the sticky", is all you have to know to get better.

nice red line (not the same guy of the draw). I had the same problem with my drawings, but the trick here is just to learn about the "weight" or strenghs that interacts in the body and how this is correlated to the position of the legs and arms. This concept is well explain in two books "dinamic figure drawing" and "force dinamic anatomy for animators". Sorry if im two vague in my explication because english is not my first languaje
