Last thread: >>2589666

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, drawing should be fun!

What exactly is it you think is a meme about Loomis? Vilppu is great and all, but what you drew shows absolutely zero understanding of what Vilppu teaches, so it's fair to assume that he is too advanced for you to learn anything from him yet.

Loomis happens to be more beginner friendly, especially his head construction.

I have been putting anime on hold and returning to studying real life

but I'm wondering how anime mixes 2D and 3D elements together, or how its forms work.
I modeled in 3D once and tried to make an animu gurl, I had to flatten the face to make it more appealing.

Does it have to do with using hard shadows?

What's the thumbnail for? Are you doing a full illustration or concept designs?

First things first. Do you know what you are drawing? Are you stuck? Go ahead and gather as much inspiration images as you can before you do anything. Also, a great way to get the creative juices flowing is word association. Like, if you're going to paint a pinup, make a list of words that come to your mind when you hear "pinup". Write them down and use it to help you find insp.

Stick to only medium size lines and super rough drawings for your thumbnails. Make a dozen or so but you really won't need anymore than that. After you choose your fav thumbnail go ahead and do a full rough drawing.

Use this rough to do a 4 value studies. if you did it tradish, scan in your rough and put 4 of it on a single print. In these value studies figure out how your lighting and values will affect composition and all that jazz.

Once you pick your favorite value thumb, print out another piece with 4 of your rough sketch to do a few color studies of it.

So, once you have your rough sketch, fav value studies, and fav color study, either go take reference photos yourself or try to find some online that's kinda close to your rough sketch. It's always better to take your own reference but sometimes that's impossible (like tigers, elephants, your mom). The closer your reference is to your sketch, value studies and color studies, the better. It just means you have less to figure out as you work.

Get your ref go ahead and make a tight drawing. Lay in your values and colors according to your studies and start rendering away. Remember, it's better to work in larger shapes with larger brushes in the beginning and use smaller and smaller brushes as you render in details.

(pic related is 1 of 4 value studies I did using my rough sketch. The thumbs were even rougher and of course without values.)

Firez?
There are some issues I want to point out.
-You removed the lower part of her cranium.
-The proportions are not correct.
-Very flat, even with hatching.
-Every line is a curve/ no structure. Look into straights vs. curves.
-The neck doesn't connect properly.
-You're confusing bone with soft tissue in the jaw area.
-Noses can be concave but they don't curve that far inwards.
-Her torso isn't exactly in profile, but it's not 3/4ths view either. Same problem for the eye.
I'm thinking you should research/study skeletal landmarks to help you with structure
and proportions.
Features of the face can usually be broken into thirds.
The girl's face in the reference is a bit convex, but your drawing seems to ignore that. It's like
you just extruded the lower part of her face without considering the relationship to the forehead. Might help to draw a curve and then draw in the negative shapes.
You should probably get a solid reference for that bird and look at how they're built, too.
Hope this helps

There's alot of basics being ignored here. Lighting is confused, and the overall image is flat beyond belief. Also the background she's casting a shadow on doesn't consist with the other girls perspective.

The worst thing that's screwing with me however is the fact you just used a shape tool to make perfectly round glasses that at that tilt would be more akin to an oval.

My suggestion is don't go coloring and rendering this. Go a bit back to shapes and basic form and try applying values and see if you understand how exactly these shapes and the body/lighting work.

you should obviously be done at that point, and I don't want to sound harash

But your approach to drawing is only going to push you to fail, because if those scratches are everything you did, you lack ground

think of drawing as a doing a building, you need to do foundations first. You're trying to convey his face features/expresion on the go.

Nobody can do that, people might be telling you to go read loomis because you actually need it, but it seems you've not catched it, it doesn't matter

the circle thing to place a head is used as starting point when you convey a sphere from it, and then puting a plane where you place a line that would be around the plane of the face.

You need to understand where that line connects to the sphere, or it's just like a magic spell

You shout few things you don't understand and expect a miracle to happen, that's not how drawing works, so try something different

btw, what's the point of extreme scratching? your handwritting isn't like that

Loomis you shitter, or study some dimension and structure. You're not even past the basics. You drew a circle, the line of the chin, and a line down the middle of the face in an angle, then ignored that angle. It doesn't matter if you're not done with the picture or it's just a sketch, but you didn't even follow your own structure. It's why people are ignoring you/spouting loomis, because at the level you're at you simply don't understand fundamentals that you should either be learning from a book, videos, looking at other artist, or life. No ones going to teach at the level you're at as there's already thousands of different ways to learn.

i've seen your art on here a lot, and i just gotta say- every single one of your figures looks deformed in some way or another. in that "one pixel off" kinda way.

your gestures always gimme that bad feel, because it seems like you know about PARTS of the anatomy, but not how to put it all together into a cohesive form. it makes me feel bad, because i want to like your art but i just can't.

comics? see point 1

you have to slog through so much shit to make a name for yourself and at that point the 5 years it took you to get a fanbase on deviantart or whatever you could have learned a fucking trade and make 80K a year

>> No.2604370

>>2604294

Being most useful STEM fields requires some difficult as brick classes to get through and investment in your studies unless you're just incredibly smart and pick stuff up on the first read, which you probably aren't, so with either you're going to invest time and money. The fact you're ignoring this makes me think you're underaged or just know nothing. It's not easy to put at least 4 years of your life into college, and it's not easy to become a super successful artist. Both take effort.

Despite all this anon you should just do what you enjoy doing and not what makes you the most money. Doing a job for anything below 40~60k and not being happy is honestly not worth it.

>>2604360

>the 5 years it took you to get a fanbase on DA or whatever you could make 80k a year

Again, that's implying you go through and do college classes, and that you have job opportunities coming out, and not riddled with student debt and a degree you either hate or can't find a job for. That amount of time spent getting your art up and out there is going to probably cost you less, and you'll more than likely be happier in the end, even if you're not making STEM money.

Also coding is easy to learn. C++, Java, C, C#, Python, and that's in about just a year of studying. I wouldn't want to have to deal with making a game from scratch because runtime is a bitch, but tools like gamemaker are retard easy. You don't even need coding knowledge desu.

What is merchandise?

There is nothing wrong with dedicating yourself to a trade, but having more than 1 is always beneficial. The ability to draw is a trade and you can market it. It's just a lot of artists don't bother becoming business savy so they don't make anything of it. What you're literally saying is-
>who cares about ownership?
>get a degree and dedicate your life to being a wagecuck for a company that will make billions off your back.

the key thing that makes the "manga style" and in turn the "anime style" is how the original was printed... often manga use stipples and lines rather than actual darker values so thats one thing to keep in mind. they did this because its easier for cheap ass printers to print dotted line to imply value than it is to actually print light and dark tones.

Looks cool anon. I especially like the pilot, they're really well done.
Pretty much what the other anon said though, it feels like some of it isn't following the same perspective (the mech's left leg, for example, the ellipse feels like it should be following the same direction as the rest of the leg instead of mostly vertical). That and it feels like some of your line weight is too thick, mostly on the legs of the mech, I think the pilot's fine as far as line weight. It might just be an illusion of the underlying sketch, but it feels like you could thin out the weighting on areas that your light source would hit, or areas that won't suffer from ambient occlusion.

Keep it up anon, I'd love to see more progress!
