Holy crap that rim light is god awful. Rim light should be subtle and sticking to the planes of her face only slightly, not covering her entirety. Why is the light in the interior of her hair? It should be on the outside hairs. Tone it down. If there is such a ridiculous amount of rim light then it should be hitting her cheek on the left as well and her brow bone. Tsk.

Increase the brightness and contrast a lot, it's hard to even see what's going on.

After turning up the brightness in photoshop: there's no clear horizon line, or your character and background are using completely different vanishing points, or something. Basically your perspective is funky.

There's nothing wrong with starting over.

It's hard to tell whether or not your foreground character's legs would be clipping through the ground or floating above them. At first glance it looks like she and the viewer would potentially be standing in a hole in the ground, but it's impossible to tell, because you don't really have a perspective to clarify that.

>> No.2578600

>>2578412
Like someone already said, your background is fucked. The door looks like it's built for midgets, the colours are too dark to see anything, and the girl is too big to fit with the scenery.

For the girl I'd make her forehead shorter, keeping in mind that the eyes are at the midway point of the head. Clean up the lines of her hair, and make the colour match the lighting of your background. Make the neck longer, fix the shoulders of the cloak/coat she's wearing since they're too stiff and wide, they should drape to fit hers. Her tits need to be more even, and farther away from the collar bone, and the shirt she's wearing is too form fitting, it shouldn't show her exact stomach muscles, just the shadows of it. And lastly, the arm hanging down is too short.

I posted this in the beginner thread but didn't get any responses. Just wondering if this is an effective way to study.

I'm trying a new method of figure drawing, though I don't know if it will be effective or not. Basically, I copy the model to the best of my ability, and then afterwards I lay my copy over the master and using a lightbox I go over the master copy's lines and make notes of where my drawing was wrong and how I can fix them. Later in the day I will try to redraw those poses from memory, trying to incorporate the corrections I made for myself.

I have no idea how much this will help me learn, though. I'm pretty decent at drawing single body parts, like arms and legs, but full bodies usually end up too long or too wide and have proportional issues.

Posting cute art from pixiv.

>> No.2580808

>>2580785
Don't know, probably will to a certain extend, be sure to not copy but understand the subject, big difference, always a good idea to see what you did wrong, and the lightbox pretty much tells you what you want to know

I think if you're decent at drawing single body parts, you should be focusing on slowly putting them together and do gesture drawings as well

Gel pen is fine, it gets the job done.

I don't recommend going neet (been there done that). It's good to have something to do besides drawing, have some balance in your life. Just because you have 8 more free hours for the day doesn't mean you'll actually use that to draw more. But that's just me. I've always focused better on drawing when I had a job or something else to do. I've also seen the same happen with other artists. They think they'll focus better because they're not tied down by a job, but then they just end up playing more videogames or slacking off. If you hate your job, either cut the hours or find something else that you can tolerate, then just manage your time better.

Eyes are too wide apart looking at different directions. The irises are misaligned, also too wide apart. She's staring into nothing, no particular direction it seems.

That mouth is too wide, stretching way past the lips. Lips are too thin, makes her look old. The jaw/space under her cheeks is too narrow. Her chin looks elongated as a result.

Her lips are too far down from her nose, that or her nose is not low enough. The bridge of her nose looks flat, it needs more shadow. Not sure where your primary light source is coming from.

To add to this, >>2581979 , do what I (>>2582001) do when painting delicate things such as faces: Get your line art down to perfection, and keep your lineart separate from everything and overtop of your other layers. Finely fill in color blocks on a layer beneath the lines, then LOCK that layer so you don't have to worry about ruining your edge and go crazy with big brushes further refining the colors. Then lower the opacity of the line art layer so that its just barely visible, then go about rendering on the color layer. Eventually you will be able to turn off the line layer all together and it will look good.

It's not quitting to start a piece over.

You're on the right track, but in one point perspective, all of the lines should be pointing toward the focal point (including the minor details).

Any scene like this, you should extend out past your intended canvas to properly position your character. Even if you aren't going to include it the entire area in your final image just doodle in the rest of her body. This way you can be sure the character is actually where you want her (and the right size).

You should start over with better construction.

I just realized I didn't explicitly point this out, and it's definitely worth explicating: the horizon line is your eye level.

The horizon line is the VIEWER'S eye level.

It seems like we're supposed to be looking slightly down at the figure, but her eyes are above the viewer's eyes, which mean she's taller than the viewer.

This is why it seems like your character and the viewer must be standing in a hole, it doesn't make any sense for the viewer and foreground character to be about half as tall as a dumpster.

You really should start over, you'll be happier you did. There's really too much to fix such as the character's height, the values, the perspective lines etc. And you'll run into more problems if say, you raise your character up a few feet so she's proper height, then you would essentially be looking up at her from waist height but you've drawn her from eye level so you'd have to re draw huge portions of her anyway. If you lower the background you'll have to go in and literally re paint everything to match the new perspective.

Just restart. Think about lighting and how you can silhouette your character because everything was dark in your original except for this blisteringly white hair which doesn't look natural, it looks like it's illuminated, and what the hell is going on with the purple stuff? I can't rationalize it.

I say this to a lot of people on here, you're biting off more than you can chew, you'd be much happier with a simple background (like a brick wall or something, and simple lighting so that you can better focus your attention on learning things in bite sized chunks. Right now you're spreading yourself too thin into territory you have no place being in. It'll lead to a bad image and you won't learn much from it.

That's because you don't understand the underlying structure. Study that (bones first then muscles) and it will imensely help your figure study and drawing from memory.

Being able to draw something from memory isn't so much memorizing every single curve and dimple of a figure, it's understanding what is making those curves and dimples.

>I was only ever good at drawing cartoony
I don't mean this in a derogatory way, but you're not good yet.

Work toward a better understanding of all aspects of art and you'll produce better work. If you're only working on your "cartoony style" what you're really doing is building a symbol library in your mind that's only going to hinder your progress later on.

If you actually understand perspective, proportions, and color theory to a reasonable extent, you can mix things up and make cartoony shit that's actually decent looking.

Do studies of simple shapes and human figures. Read and do the practice work in Loomis' books.

>Some minor critique:
After getting past how distracting the faces are, the hands and feet are the most glaring mistake. The hands actually look decent for for a cartoon, but both the hands and feet in both your images aren't symmetrical (they're different sizes and shapes - the thumbs attach at different points on each hand), you could improve this by doing studies of 3d shapes.

For the love of Loomis, don't put eyes on top of hair. If you want eyes that big, make the hair fit properly around that, at least let the hair overlap the eyes, goddamn.

I like the concept in your second image. If she's supposed to be a robot/android thing disguised as a human chick, you may want to make that exceedingly visually obvious to the viewer. In general, the concept you're trying to convey should read from a distance (or in a thumbnail), especially in more cartoony content where you usually have greater leeway where suspension of disbelief is concerned. If it's supposed to be a secret that she's an android, then there's no point in showing the android aspects at all. Right now, the image on the right could go either way.

Try picking very light shades of blue to accent eyes and cape, and try forcing forms more.

My two cents. Although I really like it as it is now.

I usually just start with a story or an idea of what I want to make, sketch it out and make a greyscale (Usually already have colors in mind), I wanted something toxic, so I played around a bit with the filters in photoshop and got something like this and worked from there to try and make it work, once I've got a base to play with I do some composition and such and pretty much give it a real story

main reason why I'm doing this piece is because I never do illustrations, so I am making up a workflow as I go

Actually I trace the digital sketch in pencil on paper then do the lines with a bic crystal ballpoint. To get a crisp scan I open "levels", push the right marker a little bit towards the middle till the texture of the paper is gone, then push the middle marker towards the right till the lines are as dark as I'd want them. I then clean up any mistakes with the brush tool and might move things about a little bit.

It's a bit of work, but I feel like the final result is better than if I had done it digitally, and with the whole hand to eye issue eliminated I think it takes me pretty much the same amount of time.

See, this levels/curves thing is exactly what I've been doing. And I agree, I really just enjoy drawing lines traditionally. It's faster and more convenient, I just need to get a good scanning and digital editing system going.

I think >>2583589 is probably right, I just need to be working with thicker lines. I'm not using a ballpoint, I'm using a nice little pentel stylo I picked up. I used to use uniball signo ballpoints when I sketched, just because I always had them handy, but their lines were too thick for my liking. This stylo gives me much more lineweight variation, but then I guess that, yeah, I'm just drawing too thin. I'll try another sketch or too with thicker lines and if it doesn't work, I'll pick up some new pens to investigate.

What kind of paper do you use? I'm on strathmore mixed media right now.

I'm gonna try to succeed in explaining this where others have failed.

Basically... the hand is MUCH closer to the camera than the head, the hand is generally big enough to cover the face from the chin to above the eyes. So the hand should be about 2x bigger than it is right now.

pic related: probably still isn't big enough, but it's closer to what it should be

Vary the sizes of the crystals; everything is very uniform. A is the closest, but still not there. Also use the arms from C, but not quite that detailed.

Can I get some feedback on this babe while they're still a sketch?

Anime, obviously, though I'm going for that "learned to draw realism first then did anime" look. They're supposed to be15-ish tho i'm making their age a little ambiguous since... the requester asked for them to wear a skin tight shiny suit.

What parts need to be tightened up? Any general positioning to fix via Lasso tool or redraw? How's perspective? Any advice is welcome.

i should mention i'm going for an anti-gravity "floating" look, tho this could be a good example of "how NOW to draw somebody leaning on a wall"

maybe the floaty effect would be clearer if I rotated it right slightly and smoothed out their back bone to make it more gently curved?

>NOW
I guess you mean't NOT? Anyways, my two cents is that if you're drawing someone floating, maybe it'd help if you pose the feet in a way that they don't look like they're in the same plane. They'd probably be hanging, or even a bit up, that's your choice. Like when you're sitting on something too high and your feet are in the air.

Yes I did mean NOT.

Thank you. That's great advice.

A few figure sketches I did some hours ago. Most of these were referenced from posemaniacs.

These are nice.

Also lined paper is good for practice. Better, possibly, actually, since tracing over the 1cm proportions between one line and the other might instill a better sense of distance and a more consistent imagination of the canvas size. Also it means you're drawing on the go with whatever you have which is a major plus.

I'd appreciate some general feedback/response/impressions on this.

Crabs usually have one claw bigger than the other. This could be further emphasized by varying sizes of crystals as mentioned here. >>2584156 Maybe instead of emphasizing it you could try some big crystals on the small claw and small ones on the big claw. That'd be somethin alright.

Also I want to see these guys with their claws up, ready to snibbety-snab. They look a bit tired as is.

>>2583958
Not too cluttered at all. You could get away with much more honestly. I love the detail of the armor, yet the over all simplicity in her outfit (at least compared to many other depictions of fantasy angels, with the giant fancy armor and all that). It gives it a sense of honesty.

>>2584152
Is this a zoom in of a larger painting? I'm interested in seeing what's going on with the plane-shift in at the bottom.

Definitely has some emotion going on. But I'd take another look at the nose -- the bottom/left edge seems a bit unnaturally outlined compared to the rest of the face.

>>2583886
I really do like the overall style, but the arm needs work, mainly in terms of foreshortening.

That's only fiddler crabs you weirdo.

Thanks, I honestly can't see how to improve the arm though. It's like I'm at my limit or something, it's not a fresh eyes issue because I left it more than 12 hours ago and I still can't see it right now, for sure I "feel" something wrong and you've noticed but I can't put my finger on what is wrong or how to fix it. Rotated the shit out of it too after a while, and it didn't work. I think this is as far as my critical eye gets for now, that's frustrating. What would you suggest? I really want to know what you guys can see

>> No.2584398

It looks generally too short. From the shoulder to the elbow should reach to the about bottom of the ribcage when arms are at the side for example. Even if you're going for a certain kind of style, short arms usually are seen as "undesirable". You should definitely look up a reference if you're feeling stuck.

>>2584381
>And I don't think you're at the level that should be critiquing anyone.
I posted my work along with my feedback so you could get a sense of my own artistic sensibilities. It's a little technique used to start a back and forth discussion. I also see that you didn't bother to post any of your own work, nor give anybody feedback.

I'm using some generic mixed media paper from a local art supply store, it's pretty close to Fabriano sketching paper, which I've used in the past.

Would be nice if you could see the role of the monsters in the picture. For example If they are her slaves make it clear that they are chained down, if they are her tamed guardians show that they are aware of her and protecting her and if they are her mount you could show the saddle that she descended from. Right now it looks like shes oblivious to the monsters that are walking towards her without us knowing why and does not really tell a cool story.

Very unique and brave composition, I like it.
One thing I notice though is a slight imbalance by facing the rightmost head the opposite way of the character, while the character and head on the left are facing the same way. The left side of the image in general feels way more natural than the right.
Also maybe try to separate them enough so that there is some space in between, at least enough so that the space is bigger than that on the left side of the biker.
