If you'd actually opened Fun with a Pencil you'd notice it basically starts with exercises trying to cram this concept down your throat by drawing contours around spheres and shit.

Did the OP ask whether Loomis lives up to the hype? No. The question was if Loomis works as a starting place to someone who doesn't understand drawing in 3D. Fun with a Pencil addresses exactly that. Cry about it if you want.

I did forget about this. But is that really an effective way to understand drawing in 3d? Unlike the other good books Loomis doesn't seem to advocate very explicitly drawing from life a lot.
