not the guy you asked but the lines are wobbly, the hands are a little strange (specifically the huge nailsbeds), and the back of the head/ear. that last one is the biggest thing-- look at the back of a guys head. don't draw each individual strand of hair.

the style isn't really cohesive throughout and it's okay for a starting point but a lot of improvement can be made.

you have good ideas, keep trying, do studies etc if you're serious about this stuff

Both and neither. Brian has his own school of thought when it comes to drawing. You go to the trouble of getting live models for reference -studying other art or using photos to find out details for something you want to draw from imagination is women's work and isn't real art. Once you have your live model or still life, look at them enough to throw some shapes down but not enough to make be accurate. Then slap some hatching across everything, ignoring the fact it doesn't match the forms on the reference at all and creates a texture that doesn't give the impression of the one the model actually has but it's right because you used **live reference** so how could it be wrong? As long as you have live reference nobody can claim you filled in gaps from your imagination or that anything is wrong with your picture even if you never looked at the reference twice. With these easy steps you too can be a silver surfacer, putting a glossy finish on amorphous blobs across the galaxy!

You put work in for replicating a flat picture of someone else's work. That is what you did. Where is your soul, where is your understanding of the human form? Anybody home? Did you sell your soul? If your average /mu/tant would show off his recent mix tape, would you be impressed?

We're on this rock with the sole source of entertainment and enlightenment coming through the minds of someone else and you just refuse us and yourself what you are capable of by using a photograph with garish colours and allow yourself to be dictated what to do.
My scanner does better than you. If I put my cat on it beforehand, there would be a shimmer of personality there, even if it's just the imprint of my cat's butthole..

They look really awkward. If you were going for a graceful mermaid dancing with a diver and not a diver going "someone get that goldfish lady off of me!", you should probably try to redraw those poses.

The light is also too bright, I'd drastically dim the lumination coming from those jellyfish the further they go away from the focal point. Also, just an idea, but maybe you could try to remove the ground plane entirely which gives you room to stretch out the mermaid's body and make her look less awkward and cramped. Would also add a nice ambiguous element to it, the mermaid pulling the diver down into the depth while dancing with him. Though maybe that's not what you are going for here.

Listen, this might be the best work you have come up with up to now and if that is so, more power to you, god knows artists feel afraid of what others might think of their work..

You know loish? Right? How does anyone with half a brain set on art dig her stuff? Right? That's kind of the point, because she doesn't give a damn about impressing her peers, she impresses her audience.

Buy a mirror and draw your face. At least you can pose the hell out of yourself and get to express what you feel.
Man, you made me sad as fuck. It's there, your skill, the hours and months, this isn't a stick figure abomination, yeah, and you do this to yourself?

You remember the scanner I mentioned? This is your master, the thing you look up to, someone else's Ps Lightroom and how close you can get to it. OK The gist of this picture is that there is a kingdom on the edge of a slowly advancing forest. The forest is owned by the witch and the kingdom can't fuck around in or around the forest without her consent. She communicates with the kingdom via leaving semi ambiguous messages on this weird shaped stump. Interpreting and cataloging these messages is the job of the cleric. He and the king and a few guards venture into the woods to this stump to collect the correspondence. But this time there is something grisly atop the stump, something horrifying. The cleric sinks to his knees and the king dismounts his horse and goes to investigate while the cleric begs him not to look.

At the bottom of the picture I want to have the roots and branches and shit resemble a human figure.

TLDR: I'm wondering what you all think of this composition. Is it boring? Is it too flat? I've been staring at it for too long.

Starting black and white does help. Dealing with color is a whole different beast and can distract you from the values which are honestly more important in the hierarchy of how your brain interprets what your eyes see. So keep doing black and white for a good long while.

Are you asking if you should do black and white studies of black and white pictures or b&w studies of colored pictures? if the latter, this is actually exactly what you need. It's harder to judge values in b&w scale when your reference is in color. The challenge is good, you'll learn faster.

Ignoring color, everything you see is comprised of values in the range of black, medium, or white. Your brain is actually designed to enhance this visual information so contrast should be your first and foremost concern.

a good rule of thumb is to omit the 'inbetween' shades, or at least downplay them. What I mean by this is that if you were to look at all of the values from 1 (white) to 11 (black) you should avoid using the values of 4 and 8. Thus you'll have a clear value jump from white to grey and grey to black thus creating distinctive contrast, but still have variations of 1 to 3 values within those three value ranges. - Essentially, your lightest darks should never be lighter than your darkest lights.

So when you're looking at a colored image look for contrast. If you see it, try to figure out which category the color fits into (white grey or black). For example, look at this picture I linked. To simplify it as much as possible, the girl and gun are black as well as the far right of the picture, the rest of the room is grey and that triangle of light is white. From there you can add variation so long as it doesn't extend outside of the set value ranges.

Now you can add bits of other values into your whites greys and blacks, like in the image, but keep them minimal, don't break up the overall shapes of the value blocks by muddying them up too much.

I've been doing pages like this almost daily and I feel like I'm not improving nearly as well as I could be. I'm trying to put in a reasonable amount of effort / focus but I still suck ass at female faces, for example. Am I too deep within my comfort zone? What should I do different to improve?

>>2478514
I like it! It's appealing whenever I see lines made with a constant size hard round brush, I should try to use that more. I could argue that you might want to make your lines smaller so you can put in more detail and have more control.

>>2478472
Maybe try drawing bigger next time? Whenever I see charcoal/related drawings they're always a lot bigger than you'd expect. Making bigger drawings gives you more control, I think. Your values are a little extreme. When doing faces in that kind of light - especially feminine ones - you should try to make your value changes and transitions as subtle and smooth as possible. If you don't they end up looking "dirty" per se.

>>2478152
There are tons of good breast / knees / other anatomy tutorials on youtube. The program you're using shouldn't really matter that much imo.

>>2477185
Your lines are sweet af but the values kinda ruin it t b h. I think instead of using some soft round brush, it would really be great if you considered more where the light was coming from and how the shadows are cast. Especially in the finer details. Seeing more patterns and detailed shadow shapes might help it. Other than that I really like the design and it looks borderline pro.

Thanks. I feel like I already know a decent amount about the geometry of the face, but I'd agree w/ you that I should do more things featuring facets / contours. Gotta say I'm pretty sick of seeing this 6.5/10 (at best) chick and her damn mole all over the damn board every damn day because of one obsessive-compulsive virgin. Any critique for this line sketch before I start adding values?

>>2475218

I don't think it's as bad as the person grading it says, but s/he is right on most points. You put a lot of effort into hatching that is admirable, but ultimately not necessary. In terms of lineweight yes, increase weight/thickness in places where edges intersect or come together, and omit the lines altogether where there is a lot of light. (like you do on the left shoulder. try that for the nose.) Your proportions seem good, but you should try to use more 'soft edges' in lieu of the hard and unrealistic ones you have on the face.

>>2476049

Nice Darkseid. Before anything else, don't forget to lower the size of your images to ~1000px x (height) before posting - makes it easier on all of us. Now, you have some problems with foreshortening(DS's leg just looks larger instead of closer). To fix this, add some more line variation to objects that are closer, more shadowed, or bunched up.

>>2476189

Looks awesome - can never draw mechs/suits that well, myself. Nice sketchy style, are you planning on taking this any farther?

>>2476658

Cool. Looks a bit over-polished/way too much makeup, but I haven't seen the reference picture. You've clearly learned how to draw eyes, but the highlights in the bottom lid seem overly bright in comparison to the eye itself. Even if the reference picture is that way, generally you want to add the areas of highest contrast in the places you want the most attention from viewers. Just a thought. It's looking quite plain without any values/texture/etc on it right now.

>>2478509

Looking nice, from the thumbnail it's coming along well. However, you can probably make the alien look like it has more depth by playing around with colors. In the shadow casted by his jaw, his skin wouldn't just get a darker shade of green; for example, try adding complimentary colors and mixing in a touch of red with the overall goal of making that area more purple. See what happens.

She has no torso and the far leg is bent at an impossible angle. You need to study anatomy more in general but if you want to complete this picture I'd recommend you get some reference for the pose. I agree it looks like she doesn't have a torso, and the legs look disconnected. I get the feeling that you're not confident in how the torso and pelvis connects. Also, while I know that Chun Li is supposed to have humongous thighs the knees look too thick. If you give the thighs more taper at the knee it will also make her more feminine, while keeping that powerlifter look to her legs. Use more reference.

On the upside you made my dick feel a bit funny, so you're definitely on to something here. Don't redraw it, try to fix it.

The perspective issue is that you didn't foreshorten her body correctly. The leg isn't necessarily a problem with perspective but it definitely looks to be at the wrong angle. The reason I recommend you redraw it entirely unlike the other anon is so you have the opportunity to construct her entire body and learn how to place everything in perspective so it looks foreshortened, and then you will know where to attach that leg to her hip and how to point it in the right direction so it won't look broken. Redrawing something isn't admitting defeat it's an opportunity to learn.

You're welcome man. One more thing, I think you could improve the way the fabric is hugging her ass.
