Coloring practice.
Still not even close to natural shade. But trying.

My question is : If I use overlay, multiply, screen... etc, to alter colors more easily, will it slow down my learning speed?
I've heard somewhere that restricting brush opacity to 100% will help understand color more faster. is it true?

your hatching is too random. you seem to just be picking the direction its going and how close together the lines are arbitrarily. girl with gun's torso hatching is a mess, her pants are a mess, the blonde lady's face is crazy looking if you take the form you are describing literally. the guy in front of the gas station his whole body is randomly hatched and the hatching around his feet goes in just about every direction it could.

hair needs to be more expressive. the planes of the face are too smoothed out it's really uncanny valley. just looks like photomanipulation, not art.

you want work that is really literal, so when complete beginners look at it they know what to emulate in order to learn how to draw. This just looks like a bunch of effects layered on top of mediocre draftsmanship. it's more ambitious to make work that informs the audience of it's creation, rather than try to aim for complete impenetrability. the latter is always a waste of time because there's always someone that will see right through what you are doing and could replicate it twice as impactful in half the time.

better to learn to draw than learn to fool your audience.

I don't think that's what he meas by pillow shading. I believe he means your shadows aren't really following the planes of the forms and treating them as three dimensional. Instead they are following the edges of your contours.

I would also say that the shadow on his right deltoid (on our left) where it meets the collarbone looks really weird. Instead of being a shadow describing an indent between two muscles, it reads to me more like a pit. Probably due to the hard line and lack of transition of values.

Your shadow placement doesn't really reflect the light source you're indicating, regardless of any additional highlights. Your shading is clinging to the edges of your drawing when it should move across forms to describe the planes. Note in this reference, the shadows are not isolated to the edges of his form. Also, the value range of the limbs vary by their relation to the lightsource.

>Do i make it more 3d?

I don't know what you're asking here. If you're referring to the comment about the deltoid shadow it's an easy fix, don't have the hard edge of the shadow to make it look like it has a sharp edge (and thus a pit) and don't use one of the darkest values to define it to make it look shallower.

I'm learning color too and I have to say trying to use effects and modes before understanding what colors I was going for made things very difficult. Once I started reading color theory and looking up tutorials and stuff, then I started understanding how to get the colors I need and when it's a good time to use layers or other effects. So personally I would recommend you practice building color and value without relying on effects for a little while first and then use the effects. However if you test them out as you go along with learning just to practice using them and getting used to them that's probably also a good idea.
And remember, don't listen to Brian.

Shadow actually flattens the drawing, if you want the color of the shadow, try dropping it behind him to really pull it forward and imply 3d space.
Shading is okay, but you could definitely get some more value in there
Anatomy is good, except the angle of his left foot doesn't match his knee (look at your foot, can you turn it away from your knee?)

>> No.2448308

It's good that you posted an example. From what I see your main problem seems to be that the value range is too low, you're not drawing any of the occlusions and your image doesn't read well because your values for the light and the shadows look the same. Maybe do some Sargent studies, in black and white first. Your proportions seem pretty good but painting asaro heads can be a good start too. And always fill your background with a midtone or your perception for the values will be altered.

>> No.2448313

>>2448292
Proportions look okay but you're still not thinking in terms of volume, the eyes and lips are very flat. The shadow is too dark to be pleasing, the eyes are not pure white, they should be much closer to the value of the skin than you may think. Drawing Asaro heads would help you a lot too.

Resize your images in the future.
Check the transition of the thumb into the wrist, the first kind of tapers into the other but you drew it too abrupt. Find some ref to fix it. It looks like you didn't construct the fingers, making them look flat. The index finger is not longer than the middle finger and although I get what you're trying to do, it's not drawn convincingly (ie foreshortening and whatnot) and as such it now seems as if the index is longer than the middle finger. The pinkie is a right mess. The nails are too obvious and as such look pasted on, also you did not draw them to follow the form of the finger hence flattening them.

I strongly advise you to focus more on construction next time, find references and grind, grind, grind. Keep it up.

i think it's good that you're doing hand studies, however i feel as though you might be plateauing because you're not really trying anything terribly new in these it's always the same strange, contorted positions, which are cool, but not entirely practical. try drawing the hand holding an object, or in a neutral position, and draw some hands from imagination as well. i would also work on how you construct your hands as well, as right now they look purely observational which doesn't translate entirely well as to imaginative drawing as knowing the underlying construction might.

The grip isn't actually too small, the overall frame of the gun is ridiculously large. I wanted to create a kind of over the top gun that was fuck huge so only the barrel, grip, and ejection port match each other in scale. This thing is made out of a m3 grease gun receiver.

The composition being divided into three equal thirds is actually a bit repetitive and the perspective isn't accurate but I think you can do something really nice even with those flaws. I'm guessing some warmer tones in the shadows of the foreground would be the next step, try to keep it light and fresh. The brushwork is kinda sloppy, you need some structured elements to contrast with the natural elements, right now pretty much everything looks organic. The values look good.

>>2449689
Looking good anon. The face is a bit asymetrical (but who am I to talk) but doesn't look fucked up. The values are very nice. A bit too much going on in the hair, it could be more simple. I like how you handled the contrast even with a value range that isn't very wide.

When Firez uses reference for anything other than a person he can be pretty precise while this guy could get that close to accurate with anything. Find an artist to reference the shit out of. Deconstruct figures until you've found a set of shapes / style of rendering a form (sketch wise) that you can use as a crutch to temporarily draw without reference. Make that muscle memory. That's exactly what firez was doing. At least brian or w/e his name is doesn't spam with the same fucking image. He is more interesting and draws more varied stuff than firez (i cringe every time i have to type out his name). no you're not pretty good, you're average if not below average with all the years of practice you have. your art has no appeal to it, it's average in every way, every aspect of it. there's nothing that makes someone go "wow this is beautiful" to a trained eye. Lines are average, construction is horrible, and subjects are just plain boring and repetitive. I think you're trying to make a meme out of yourself to compensate for your lack of skill and fall back on that every time you get critisized.

Right now anybody can reach your level by practicing one year, nothing to be proud of and gloating about everywhere. you should stop that attitude and seriously work on your art.

It looks like to me that you drew her forehead and the rest of her skull separately, as there's a bit of a hard crease at the hairline. Hair should flow over the skull as it has volume.

uhhhhhh nope lol. i like interacting with amateur artists but it gets silly sometimes. you guys like to play "good artist" but you really have to get your priorities straight. imagination is just another word for memory. you draw from memory once, you prove you can do it, then you never do it again. its really not that important.

i hate to hammer on the fundamentals thing but you need to learn to draw most importantly. as you get older you'll realize hopefully how unimportant you're "imagination" and "creativity" is, and that the hours you put into art is more important. i'd take dedication over "imagination" in sneer quotes anyday.

that being said, if the anon i responded to is a girl i think imagination is more important. i prefer my men to work realistically and my women to work imaginatively, but thats just me. i mean really the only reason a guy should learn to draw is because it makes the woman he is with happy. drawing your life partner is an important part of any relationship it really makes women happy. but women should focus on more career oriented work like concept art, illustration, graphic design, and animation. I mean if i was in a relationship i really wouldn't care about being painted. I don't want to see my ugly mug on a canvas.

I guess that's my main problem with /ic/ is you guys are doing women's work. man up and learn to draw, bitches. pussies fuckin around drawing dragons all day like fucking what just draw your hands you have one fucking job lmao.

the abstract art just pays the bills. if i can put one line on a blank canvas and sell it for $100,000 then fuck it im gonna do that, but i need to be able to draw from life better than anybody else in order to get to that point. it's no offense to you guys i'm sure you're nice people but i had to be better than all of you. i've got a world to save. i don't really have time to fuck around anymore.

This is probably a question better saved for the stylization thread (which I'm assuming is the animu thread, I'll crosspost) but is there a better way to shade intermediate values with only hard black/white without crosshatching? What about patterns of different densities?

Key points from this:
-Drawing from life enough to be able to draw something that looks drawn from life without reference is bad
-Also it's something only women should try to do because concept art and illustration is women's work
-Drawing from life and trying to abstract it before you can make it look real in the first place is good
-The only reason a man should learn to draw is to please women because women expect to be drawn
-He plans on marrying an e-celeb cam girl

Calm down Brian.
What world are you saving?
How are you saving it.

You do know that the people capable of selling art for those prices are already high society before they started painting anything, as in they are from family's that have been partaking in history's biggest artistic circle jerk for generations. Riding the backs of actual progressive artists from the dates between 1940-1960 (post modernism basically) "all expression is insincere and has a goal in hand" is a good way of looking at what the final cries of actual expression had to say.
The need for abstract art died then and there.
Its done.
The voice was made and heard, all those trying to emulate that voice are parroting and or have not done enough art history study yet.

The abstract art you do is fine, but just understand that its for you.
Just you.
No one else.

The world you are saving, is your own.
No one else's.

If you really want to save the world for others, drop the brush and pick up a hammer/calculator/microscope.

I would still very much like you to answer the first 2 questions i asked you at the beginning of this message.

The perspective relationships are quite a bit off, but the way the neck and shoulders interact with the head and torso are pretty tricky - try taking this as an opportunity to nail it down.

For now, the lines indicating the clavicles and the pit of the neck are way too high - they'd be at home if we were looking up at the figure, which we're not. From this angle we'd actually see some of the top of the shoulders and the muscles leading up to the neck.

Think about it by a few landmark points, if that'd help - how far up would the pit of the neck be from the nipple line? It's about a handswidth on me, so I'd put it there. Then draw the clavicles out to the tops of the shoulders, then round out the back and insert the neck.

Been working on pic related recently. I'm pretty much decided on the head design but I'm torn between whether it would fit better on a more hulking, bull-like body or a more bony, spindly one like that of a bat. Trying the former out first.

>>2451371
Shaded boxes can give a nice contrast if you're too lazy to draw backgrounds I guess. Keep it in that pic anon, I think it works really well.
Also you totally didn't need to point out the head kek

How do I light this thing, /ic/? I've already asked for some crits elsewhere but it isn't enough.

I'm working with a solid gold character and my light sources are that magic comet thing, the scroll around its neck and the magic emblem on its head. All soft glowing pinks. I'll have to add gemstones on it later too and I'm pretty fucking lost.

Superposition.

Assuming there's no ambient light, do the shadows and light from one, then do the next, overlaying the shadows on top of the previous one to make certain areas even darker, and overlay the light source to lighten up some shadows, then so on and so forth.

This is my one of my recent goes at ink, I'm slightly colorblind so color isn't my strong suit, so I'm trying to get into cross hatching and this type of shading.

Making a short comicbook story about a joker victim, i don't know exactly where to take it yet, but i have an idea. Just trying to experiment with the style and look of it for now though.

Pointers and general advice about what you'd want from a story like this would be fantastic, and would you read it based on this one panel?

oh, The joker im going with is supposed to be a tribute to Mckeans joker, who will be listed as an inspiration and influence when it's done.

are you drawing from a photo reference or life? my suggestion is to copy drawings from masters like vilppu (hands, etc) before going in to life drawing / photo references. Also dont do artists that are obsessed with muscle mass (michaelangelo) if you're just a beginner.

You should consider not outlining things so harshly before you shade them in. It's only really noticeable at the bottom part of the picture.

Love the shading work, love the symmetry, love the surreal feel of it all.

Gorgeous coloring, but I feel the face is a tiny tad wonky... Perhaps it's just me, but have you flipped your canvas and had a good look at it?
