i like it, i think. I think the sheets (i assume they're sheets) are a bit too stiff-looking, they feel very stone like. maybe that's just my mind playing tricks on me since there are actual stones as well, but the two substances should be very distinct.

i'm a sucker for space stuff though so i like the nebula lookin deal, could be a bit more transparent though imo. also the largest star seems to have something bizarre hanging off its flare, not sure if that's intentional or not.

is there a certain way youre supposed to do oils? ive been doing light layers over the past like 3 days and i dont think its right because its turning out like a watercolor. i dont have any training in oils btw spare a 'graphed' assignment in highschool.

I think the only set rule for oils is the fat over lean rule, meaning each new layer needs to have a higher oil content to ensure proper drying/hardening and prevent cracking. This rule can be bent somewhat by using an alkyd medium such as liquin.

>> No.2448305

if you like the look then what's the issue? if you don't then use less thinner and do fewer, thicker, layers. oils are great because you can get so many kinds of looks from them

a.) i like painting, so using a tiny dallop of black paint and a lot of water doesn't seem like a waste to me, and b.) if i want to paint in perspective it seems like i should learn to PAINT, no?

>> No.2448602

the material is pretty irrelevant, so you pick the most efficient one, just picking a sketchbook and drawing a few hundred boxes or lamps in correct perspective is a much more efficient use of your time, and it WILL transfer to painting but whatever man

>> No.2448604

>>2448533
Well, if you want less transparency use more paint and less thinner, you can always do thin washes on top of that if you want. Also pigments vary from opaque to semi-opaque to transparent, so pay attention to that. They also have different drying times. Just experiment, I'm new to oils myself and I'm having a blast.

If you want the paint to mix well, you'll have to add a bit of linseed or stand oil to your turpentine (in a glass dropper or something).

Are you using sable brushes? Looks like it's got more turpentine than paint.

theyre like the 64 combo pack synthetic brand i really dont have a preference or know enough to have one. but yeah its turning out like a watercolor because i keep puting too much turpentine in it because i want too thin of layers and they take forever to dry. im kind of having a hard time just using a ton of paint in thick layers because paint costs a lot. heres a current pic

I like the airbrush textures and abstract framing of the face, especially where the linework of the hair becomes transparent at the top.

the rendering of the nose and lips could have usttle more attention, and I get that you're going for an expressionistic mix of realism and abstraction, but the areas you chose just make the piece seem unfinished.

I think that if you used color over the eye and added more separations of the face, it might go further to create a consistent effect.

>> No.2450678

Hey, I like the complete separation you did in the eye!

The only idea I had when I painted this was made it with a notorious brushing, I wasn't looking for a perfect smoothing effect. And the palette of colours was already decided too before start, but I thinked on use magenta for the only eye you know.

Thanks!

Thank you anon.

I will admit that the painting came out muddy and dark, which is why I am changing it. But I don't appreciate how some anons are trying to depict me as a beginner who makes beginner's mistakes like mixing too many times with oil and making colors like poop.

As you can clearly see in the previous revision, the painting was not all poop color as the anon is trying to depict it as. It was actually golden until I changed the background. Now I am changing it to cobalt green. Hope that will improve the painting.

Again, thank you anon.

You're right, the background is somewhat cramped. It looks quite a lot like an exotic mall photograph. I'll have to darken most of the details in the background when I get a decent #0 brush.

The planes in the face are flat because I was using almost pure turpentine at the time... so they wouldn't mix and they would dry too fast. Don't make that mistake, kids!

It is a lot of fun to do and I'm just trying to say that anyone can do it, even if you're somewhat tacky or conventional. Try painting in the sunlight sometime!

i like it but i feel like the stars are a bit too blobby. try to get better definition - most should be small points, only a few should have a lens flare effect or a big corona. you have the skills to do it clearly, but if it's a stylistic choice i have to disagree with it. also making the stars pure white doesn't really comport with reality (i mean, it sort of does but depending on the light wavelength stars tend to appear yellow or bluish in photos, and imo that makes a better painting too).

keep it up though, i'm also a sucker for space painting and would love to see more of your work.

if you can afford like 20 bucks you can buy a good sized sketchbook or paper pad for the water colors. water colors are nice because you do a bunch of quick sketches with them, or you can spend a lot of time and get something really detailed, or do something ultra stylized with just a few colors. working not on a canvas might help relieve some of the pressure as well, since you can tear the page out and toss it if you really hate it (at least, i feel a lot more relaxed painting studies/sketches on paper).

painting is a journey though, it can be stressful but just remember that every mistake is a step on the road of improving and getting better.

you should really try to be more delicate with the paint i just get the feeling you are ruining brushes by the minute.

if you are going to do impasto, do it in smaller strokes, and really try to lay and sculpt the paint on top of the underpainting. study van gogh's work.

for as vibrant and violent van gogh's stuff seems there is a really delicate touch to his work.

of course that means you'll have to get smaller brushes and palette knives and not do these giant brushstrokes but the end result will be much nicer. as it is you seem to be pushing all the paint into the paint below it and it all blends into a muddy mess

inb4 that's on purpose

i think you would have a better finished product if you gave your layers more time to dry in between painting. the bars look like garbage since they've mixed and while the main figure has definition there are certainly areas (some of the dots, the outline of her blouse) where the colors are mixing on canvas in a way that looks neither intentional nor pleasing to the eye.

i won't say i particularly like your style or direction, but if you insist on doing these sorts of paintings i think you could improve some technical aspects at least.

there's your problem

oil isn't like acrylics where you can make as many paintings

you have to be more patient and lol...what the fuck.

a decent painter also spends time reviewing their art as much as they paint

why do so many newcomers to painting always wanna rush shit. you're not gonna improve doing that

sorry im posting a drawing in a painting thread but i havent done a new self portrait yet and also its fun talking to chunbum cause he's like two days away from giving up

>> No.2481969

>>2481743
you know i hope chunbum doesn't give up. I don't like his paintings and I hate his style, but he also contributes and is, at the very least, true to what he believes. every time i see a chunbum painting I'm happy, even if only for a moment before i get triggered or panic about the thread going into a nosedive, because he is on his own path and refuses to let people knock him from it.

at the end of the day we all have to walk our own paths in life, no matter how much anyone else tells us otherwise. I appreciate chunbum sharing his journey with us, even if I wish every time i see his paintings that he'd go a different direction. and if he stays on his path, maybe he will or maybe he won't.
