this is actually quite a bit easier since it doesent require you to be as precise with the proportions in order to make it look decent

just focus on the overall shapes and dont get overwhelmed by the amount of detail in the fins (but eveb then, the detail is mostly lines)

Beginner here, but my 2 cents. Dont get obsessive over it, I remember when learning about the loomis heads for the first time, I promised myself that I would do 100 of them. All it will do is just stagnate your progress.

Try looking up animals and random objects, and building them with construction, cubes are the most important form imo, but you can use spheres, cones, (What peter han says) and make sure to use cross contours to understand the surface. This will help you understand the point of form a lot more than just grinding a bunch of random shapes. And make sure to draw a new thing every time, its a skill to be able to look at any object, and come up with perfect construction. I recommend starting with something simple like books, then chairs, then fruit, then cars, then animals, etc. Also, everything has gesture in it, not just the figure. If gestures only applied to figures, it wouldn't be that fundamental, would it? And then, once when you understand construction, then move onto figure drawing books.

Oh, and make sure to practice drawing from imagination a lot. The whole point of construction is so you can use it UNDERSTAND reference, not directly copy or trace it. Not memorize it perse, but just develop the skill to look at reference while drawing, and being able to construct it.

I like giving random rants once in a while.

no, im just some useless fuck whoes more interested in learning how to draw, than actually drawing myself. Actually, the example does not match with what im saying because it does not show off cross contours, just the constructing.

Heres something crude I did in 5 mins. I constructed this with cubes just by looking at a picture of a tiger, then I sculpted the form using cross contours.

Im trying to learn how to draw the figure myself, and im still far from finding a suitable way yet. Im really bad at including perspective.

yep, Ive only actually seen his lone control class. I just believe the only things you need in drawing are gesture, perspective, cubes, spheres, cylinders, and cross contours, and just with these tools, you can build everything you can imagine.

I also really like burne hogarth because even though everyone critiques his anatomy, its trully amazing how he could come up with such a unique constructing system just with years of practice, same with George Bridgman. Although, people say hogarth stole his head from loomis, and I wouldn't deny it, but still.

Which is why, I think style should come from how people perceive their reference. When I look at a bicep, you and I can come up with two different ways to construct the muscle, even though we are looking at the same thing. And I think that makes the process of drawing more entertaining, and individual, while still maintaining craftsmanship, instead of just copying every book word for word.

>>2266627
I did, but I can see that it did not work.

As you can see, I love talking about the process of drawing rather drawing itself.

I started painting towards the neck and now I'm just frustrated and I've completely lost focus. I understand what I'm supposed to be doing, but I just can't make it work. I think I went too bright with the lighter areas, and it looks all flat and shitty. If anybody has any advice on how to do this properly I'll give it a shot, but otherwise I think this is as far as I'm getting with this thing. This is my third try and it's the worst so far. The end of the head is actually doing a subtle curve; you made it completely straight.

It's not the tilt itself, it's the curvature. If the ref did not curve like it does, it'd end up exactly like it does in this.

Im not sure if this is poor observation or some minor symbol drawing, I'd be inclined to say the latter because you can see the same exact kind of inconsistency on the tail.

Other than this, I'd have to say that the messy scales are a little ugly. They are very organized and defined on the ref.
As for shading, you did not highlight "strands", or bigger portions, of the fins. Much like hair or drapery, things end up being grouped a little, as they make curves that are wider than the individual texture lines. The darkened parts have better observation, it's the lighter parts that are incoherent. I think you can fix this by having a more careful base/block-in, then do the texture after.

May I ask how long it took?

Push those lines, it's muddy as fuck

Why is the cup's cast shadow so long? Do you have a lantern right in front of it?

Also the cup is completely different than what you drew. You could use the circles pattern to help define the form.

Also, if you have the cup near you, the base will look more like a circle, whereas the top will look more stretched, because of vanishing points.

It looks like you've made the base and the top in your drawing exactly the same way. That is contributing to the discrepancy.

And then you're missing all the glass distortion/reflection. You made a shitty little approximation and didn't even sharpen your pencil, plus you're going soft as fuck.

Of course it'll look flat.

I know I post about this a lot and I promise this will be my last post if I can help it but:

I'm reading Keys To Drawing by Bert Dodson and a lot of the exercises involve having people pose for you in certain positions and then drawing them using techniques, like the current one I'm doing I have to use plumb and level for someone sitting down with their knees raised.

I'm not confident enough to ask anyone to pose for me, can any other social rejects who've read this book tell me what they did at this point? I'm currently just watching through videos on Youtube hoping to find someone pose in that kind of position so I can draw it but I'm not yielding many results.

I have two ideas for you.
Number one. Ask ten people irl and if they say yes ask if you did a good job. It'll boost your confidence in asking people and in drawing.
Number two. Go to a public place and draw people without letting them know. You'll have to draw faster which is fine and helpful, but it makes you feel a little bit like a spy or ninja.

You're giving the head no depth/volume, looks like a vertical dish.
If the head is 3/4, there needs to be a decent space to show the back of the head. You still place the facial features more or less in the middle, leaving no space for it. Same for the ears, which you always place on the contour of the head despite them not really being there.
Along with it goes the neck position, which is incoherent as well.

I'd suggest you study some anatomy and also head construction with loomis.

Also, work on big paper. You'll learn nothing by doing a stylization for ants, the second file is especially testament to how useless it is.

more than just saying lined paper makes your stuff automatically shit
the lines busy up the page
instead of having a clean canvas to work with, you're starting with something that already has lines on it, and although it doesnt seem like a big deal, they will impact your own lines on the paper and how you perceive your work.
Carry around a folder with computer paper you stole from the library/bought yourself. put it in a backpack with other pencils and shit. it'll be better for you.

I'm doing vilppu's drawing manual just now, been figure drawing for a couple of weeks.

Couple of questions though:
1. Should I be drawing the head, hands and feet in detail?
Right now I'm doing a box for the head and planes for the hands and feet, just to make sure my perspective is correct.

2. At what point should I start looking at anatomy and proportions?
These are my biggest issues after perspective, in my opinion reading about them would improve my figures and gestures but I don't want to move on if there's more to gain from drawing models with a 'fresh' view.

3. Should I be drawing the model's clothing?
On one hand clothes will broaden the types of forms I draw, on the other it's just as hard to see through the clothes and draw the body structure.

Thanks.

1. hands feet and heads can be done in their own studies. what you are practicing now appears to be body structure/proportion/anatomy etc. so its not needed in these. however thats not to say you SHOULDNT do it. feel free to practice and see how it looks with the body as well as the individual drills for hands/feet.

2. Anatomy is always important. if you dont take the time to learn it youll always have that 'this doesnt look quiite right' feeling when drawing. a lot of people make schedules for themselves. it will take longer to learn everything one step at a time, than to designate days to certain things. While you are doing figures, pick a day of the week and practice anatomy. Over time youll develop a natural way of seeing parts of the body and where they should/should not be. this will improve your figures immensely.

clothing is a whole other beast. learn human form first, then put material over it. learning folds, flow, weight, etc will take time and will need its own time set aside. after you draw a form, try drawing it again, simpler, and put clothing over than one.

What's the most effective way to study drawing?

>> No.2269722

There are no shortcuts, anon
Draw a healthy balance of all those things until you feel satisfied with the quality.
At the start, I liked to draw full body people from poses and people you see while commuting for example. Could be 30sec/sketch or 30min/drawing

>> No.2269732

>>2269705

There isn't really a "most effective way", and if there is it's controversial and people won't agree on it. A lot depends on you and your goals. You'll get a lot of different opinions on what's effective.
You'll find different methods in the various books people will inevitably point you to (IE Loomis). Take what you like, leave what doesn't work for you, and you'll come out with what's effective for you. It doesn't hurt to try everything once, though.

If you're trying to draw people my suggestion is to learn construction. At least for me, getting the hang of construction was what really got me out of drawing flat shit/contours and thinking of forms / three dimensional shapes. Don't spend ages rendering things because adding details won't teach you much about the basics. Simplify stuff to basic shapes and draw a lot. Personally I don't advocate timed gesture drawing early on but some people do, it does have a benefit of preventing you from fixating on details, but if you don't really know basic anatomy / proportions it'll be like pulling teeth.
Keep track of stuff that gives you trouble and focus on it. Don't draw limbs solely for the sake of drawing limbs, but if you're drawing a lot of people and frequently finding you can't draw legs, study legs. Figure out their anatomy, look up tutorials, draw a lot of legs.

ALWAYS use references when learning. Even when you're just drawing whatever from imagination you should be looking for references to help you. People confuse 'drawing from imagination' with 'drawing from experience'.

What you'll want to do is get something like Bridgman's books, read through the section on hands while copying the pictures. Find pictures online and work on constructing the hands, getting the form of it. Get as many figure books as you can and go through the hand sections.

Slow, patient study. Don't worry about cranking out a hundred drawings, just do it one drawing at a time. Do it once, do it right, then do the next one.

I looked at Vilppu and Loomis again and I think I understood something today. Tried drawing a few figures with a little more attention to detail and this is the result after cleaning up.
Am I learning? Still too much outlines? Help? Crits? Pls guys

>> No.2269934

Do you guys close one eye when drawing from life? I've noticed it makes things a lot easier to "copy", but is it cheating? Would it make a life drawing seem flatter?

>> No.2269936

>but is it cheating?

If you consider anything that makes it easier for you cheating, which seems disturbingly common on this board.
Do what works for you. How you observe it won't make it seem flatter, it's how you draw it. You're already converting a 3 dimensional object into two dimensions anyway.

>> No.2269941

>>2269934
I don't, but I have limited depth perception anyways so there's almost no difference. A drawing is limited to a single perspective anyway unless you have 2 drawings with slight changes in perspective an then cross your eyes until they overlap.
I'd say it's okay, but try constructing what's in front of you instead of copying it. Then again I'm a beginner myself so idk

>> No.2269945

>>2269936
The whole "cheating" thing makes sense if you're trying to practice. Using shortcuts will only hamper your own progress.
Of course if you're trying to just draw something amazing there's no such thing as cheating.

>> No.2269965

>>2269945

If you're practicing drawing from life and closing an eye works, you're still practicing drawing from life. Intentionally making it harder for yourself doesn't magically make the practice more effective. Half of practice is finding the efficient method to get the result you want in a way you can remember and reproduce.

>> No.2270013

The difference is in whether or not you're applying your learned knowledge. Are you constructing the forms of the reference, applying value, checking perspective? Are you drawing the figure in ways that accentuate the forms, and give it depth? Are you analyzing the reference and gaining experience in depicting the forms involved in the drawing? Remember, you're not just copying the outlines in the reference, you're sculpting forms with your pencil, starting with simple shapes and building up to details, feeling around the form in the reference. You're not copying the photo, you're sculpting it's likeness.

Single limbs for very detailed studies and textures, whole people for proportion and scale, and fast studies for figure.

Okay sure, quick first impression: you're missing a lot of the subtle hues that gives the fish a a certain vibrancy. Some people might disagree with me but I think you'd learn a lot if you went over the reference with the color picker (a great tool if used responsibly). The body of the fish has the typical monochromatic look and lacks the rich blues and pale greens of the original. Look for instance at the blues at the sections between the scales (whatever it is called, the lines that separates the scales) towards the tail - in your study it looks brown, muddy and desaturated, but in the ref it contains both darker blues and some sprinkles of lighter blues. Also there is a shift from orangey tones towards cooler pale pink tones if you go from the scales towards the dorsal fin towards the tail. Lastly, I think you would do well in using some harder brushes to bring in some hard edges to get rid of that soft muddy digital painting with the hard round brush look. Keep going and hope that was helpful

As for colors, yes, I do not understand them yet unfortunately. Is the solution just using the color picker and analyzing pictures? Right now, all I do is pick one tone and change the slider from darker to lighter, I don't ever go into different colors outside of that slider, as it's hard to comprehend what a color blends into.

Also , what is a hard brush and a hard edge?

You're welcome. A lot of people tell you to avoid using the color picker, as it is somewhat the painting equivalent of tracing. What you should do is to always use your eyes first to your best ability - then use the color picker and try to analyze where you went wrong and make some corrections. Be wary though that depending on the compression of your reference åoctire you might pick up some weird hues with the color picker. Try to click a few times in the same area and find the most average tone.

Check the picture for an explanation of edges, it's watercolour but explains the main idea. Even in a very sharp photograph there is always a a blend of soft and hard edges, or soft and hard transitions.

Looking at that picture, it looks like most of the body of the fish is soft edges, and the fins are mostly hard edges. Is that correct?

In order to know how to properly stylize, you need to understand how realism works first, so you can make the stylization appealing.

Especially anime stylization, which is mostly "remove detail". How will you ever make it good if you don't know what should be there in the first place? You'll just misplace everything and it'll look like shit.

Just like your faces there you posted. They lack not only construction, but the actual shape is completely off.

Train your eyes and do CAREFUL measurements. I mean take 20 minutes to make the head shape by that. And do several.

You are doing random lines and are trusting your brain as to what you think a face looks like. Well, your brain's fucked, so don't trust it.

As the other guy said, Loomis shall be thine savior. Also, get used to thinking of anything you draw as a 3d shape. Don't think about drawing details for now, focus on creating 3-dimensional-looking shapes.

This is especially why anime faces are the worst shit you can learn with. They all lack the proper shading and consistency to be interpreted as 3d objects. They can be understood to an extent, but they cannot be used to learn anything from, as they are misleading, as most of the time the shading is focusing on highlighting the facial features and not following the form, because of pandering weebshit reasons.

Adding to this, every single good anime artist also has a good understanding of 3d/realism.

Noone spoonfeeds in /ic/, faggot. Think you would have known that already. You're kind of getting to a point of having somewhat of a semblance of 3D.

However, I don't think you're breaking down things into the right shapes or forms. Your figures look really awkward and "lumpy". You need serious work on proportions and what human body parts are shaped like, as well as gesture. Literally everything. Practice more.

Whatever parts you're trying to convey don't look like human body parts.

This is why noone can give you specific help, because ANY extra studies in anatomy are going to help you. If Vilppu and Loomis don't work, check out Hampton, or proko,

You need to have a more critical eye before thinking you're "almost there" or "get it", because I don't see you "getting" anything.

But saying "it's shit and looks like chimps" doesn't help anyone. All I wanted was for someone to give actual advice. You know, on the artwork critique board. Something like "your figures don't have correct anatomy, for example ___, and the forms are generally bloated." would've made me happy.

Try stopping tracing and learn how to measure; you'll actually never learn how to draft.

okay, is this more like it? it's much more difficult to draw and feels more forced, to me at least

still not yet there, the gesture is the most important thing, that is why its called gesture drawing. Proportions and anatomy are less important. I know its hard to ignore it but you just got to leave your mind blank and just draw what you feel.

Watch this video as an introduction and then continure with vilppu

The entire critique for your picture was summed up in the first response, man. You need to use references when you're drawing. It's fun to do stuff off the top of your head but if you want to do a serious study to get critiqued, use references and try to get accurate anatomy. There's no point drawing from imagination if you don't know what you're drawing. I said earlier, drawing from imagination gets confused with drawing from experience. You don't have the experience to draw from. Get figure books and references, grind out studies, post your work with the references.

Like I said, there is no point in giving targeted crit when the majority of the picture is off.

Trying to learn proportions. Is this the right way to go about it? I still don't get where the thighs and the waist connect at.

this is rlly good, but i don't think you properly understood the shape of the eyes, which goofs the whole thing

this is the best fish so far.

BUT i think you focussed on getting the shape down so much (which you succeeded in) that the form and the lighting got a little perfunctory
