I think you should keep the light much more simple if you want to practice anatomy without ref. It's not very accurate either way. Pecs attach too high, his right (from us left) arm doesn't protrude into the forground accurately and hand attached to it is just a mess. The face is alright although maybe jaw a little squished and forehead a little too elongated.

I think you are doing yourself a huge disservice by not keeping the lighting situation very simple and descriptive for this one. Cold ambient light from above, bright warm light from any side is what I'd go for. That allows you to 'calculate' how the light should affect every plane so that you can actually make conscious decisions rather than having to wing it (which imo right now makes spotting the anatomy errors in your wonky construction that much harder)

Also although there is some degree of value control it seems rather random and not descriptive of form at all.

I just started studying painting for at least 4 hours a day. I'm trying to casually build up the tolerance to paint for longer hours, but because I'm just starting this schedule, handling the small failures I'm facing now can get a little rough. I'm 4 days in and the ones prior never went anywhere(didn't save them). Would really appreciate any critiques if possible. I plan to do a painting without any ref after every 2 weeks of studying to see what I retain from them.

I'm not that guy. You are welcome to your opinion, but I think it is overstepping to call me "absolutely clueless". Why? What is wrong with my critique? How is it clueless? You have no idea who I am or what my skill level is, it's an anonymous board dude.

I fully stand by my crit there. It IS very saturated. For some reason the dude is in a very purple environment with a very yellow light hitting him from behind. He used some sort of layer mode to colour it in, and it leaves a monotonous and saturated look to it. Look at how strong the red of the hair is, how orange his skin is, how purple things are and how there are splotches of super saturated marks between things or at the edge of things. And the rimlight definitely is not hitting consistent planes. There are some that are not lit up that should be and some that are lit up that shouldn't be. He isn't thinking clearly of the direction the light is coming from.

Chill, man. I don't know how the dude colors, so my immediate thought was "Why color a sketch?" Honestly, you're not helping any, discrediting people you know little to nothing about. I'm not an expert, but I'm by no means clueless, and neither is the other guy.

hey thanks for the critique!
my general idea was to have him in a sunny day but mostly in the shadow. so the rim light is the sun, the fill is the sky and some reflected light from the ground.
color has always been the hardest of fundies for me so gotta keep practicing

>> No.2240777

>>2240772
You can't really have the rimlight from the sun AND him in shadow at the same time. Either he's in shadow or is being hit from the sun. If the sun is rimlighting him then he would be in the open but backlit and we are staring towards the very bright sun which would change the scene entirely. Or it could be evening/morning and the sun is a bit weaker as it goes through a ton of atmosphere, and this also would explain the low angle of the light hitting him. You should find some reference photos (be careful with extreme light scenarios though as they often see differently than the eye) or reference paintings and see how the colour and light look there and then use to inform your sketch.

>> No.2240779

>>2240777
Btw, for extreme light on portraits, Henry Hensche is not a bad reference. He painted a lot of backlit outdoor portraits with an emphasis on the colours and tones you get from it. While a photo would get washed out, he paints all the colours your eye would pick up on (exaggerates it a bit too so it's easier to see and captures the feeling more).

I'm not that anon, but I agree with him that things are not that great. Don't be so quick to dismiss feedback. To be honest I think the multilimb thing is making it harder for you to see the mistakes. Try isolating his legs for example in a single one of the poses, and you will see the anatomy and structure is not that great.

I also think doing those multilimb things are bad for developing a good sense of posing/gesture and weight. Hogarth did them as a way to show motion/how things can sit in space, and it was more for displaying an educational image than for his own growth. Jana and Algen took it from him and just did random poses with extra limbs, but they both abandoned that exercise after a bit--I think they came to the same conclusions I did about the ineffectiveness of it as an exercise. It's essentially a novelty thing with no real value and can actually be a bit harmful in a few ways.

4chan has rules
each 4chan board has his own rules and culture and you have to adapt to these, no exceptions
first thing to do in this board is to read the sticky, so you know what the heck all this is about
with that attitude you're not likely to diggest any kind of critique, keep showing the nickname so we can recognice the idiot you are being

if you want critic, there you go:
tutankamon is shit, you did not construct anything underneath your lineart, therefore it lacks form (volume), it's completly shape, you're only thinking about 2D shapes and even on that you're failing hard because of not even properly knowing head and facial proportions, your brainless scratches to fullfill some shapes tell a lot about how vague and novice you're, you did not represent any kind of local values or light.
Even if the proportions are less fucked up, the same principles apply to your second attempt, you did symbol drawing rather than really suggesting forms. You did not even tried shading, you just pillow shaded random parts without any kind of value or edge control. You didn't trought about light position or intensity, shadow and light zones, casts shadows, you totally lack basic principles, fundamental understanding that allows us to represent beilable things on 2D.

Welcome to /ic/, now read the begginer thread so you can start grinding properly your art.

>> No.2241453

>>2241409
overall the drawing is flat and boring. Generic advice Id give is general anatomy stuff. Those lines on the cheek arent really describing any forms at all, the ear is too high and looks really weird because of how dark those lines are compared to the rest of the drawing. The area where the nose connects to the brow should dip in more and make a more extreme angle. That whole back section of his head is just really weird, I have no idea what's going on there, lots of weird tangents that make no sense. And some general advice, use long confident strokes, it doesn't matter if the line goes where you don't want it to, erase and try again, you'll eventually get really good line work which makes drawings more interesting in-itself

>> No.2241458

Right.

>It's essentially a novelty thing with no real value and can actually be a bit harmful in a few ways.

It's your opinion, I respect it but I don't agree with it. For anatomy in general it would probably be better to do different poses for every movement? Maybe, but I can see improvement in every new one I do and they're just a warmup anyway.

When I do those, in my mind the member is isolated. Anyway the first limbs are isolated because there is nothing there yet and I do construct then muscle by muscle most of the time. I tried my best to structure the legs in this kinda of foreshortening and it's far from perfect, I'm no master, so it's ok if it's not that great. The anatomy is half assed maybe, but I don't think the muscles are in the wrong positions.

Yeah, hands are a bitch. Even when I try to use mines as reference it ends up kinda wonky sometimes. Sometimes I just give up and go for the next one also. D:

idk what inktober is, but I did an ink drawing.
I didn't really have the right materials to pull this off but I think I managed. I had a .1 Micron pen, a brush pen, and a marker. So kind of limited in what I could do with the amount of time I had. I didn't capture his likeness particularly well but I'm okay with that. I'm used to erasing pencil until it looks right. Pen is kind of a different thing. You really gotta just go for it.

pretty much correct. I just had a layer for line art, base color, shadows, and highlights. Line art and highlights were done with the pencil tool (pressure opacity and brush size). tbh I'm not sure why anyone would want to color like this though

>> No.2242136

>>2242112
Proportions definitely, also just the shapes of things, a eye at side view does not look like that. Use reference.
Your lighting is confusing, I'm not sure where exactly it's coming from since theres a ring of sharp light towards the back, and strong light towards the front. And the nose suggests lighting from above? It's just all over the place fam.
I like your color choices, but your rendering needs work, especially the hair. With this, the edges of his face are rendered too sharply (his jaw mostly). Did you even try with the ear?
With rendering, you're not grasping the surface quality of objects, your skin is okay, probably the best understood. But the metal doesn't feel right, especially with those squiggles . The blue cloth feels too shiny to me and not properly textured. The headband thing looks awful, there's no way that a cloth headband would have a bright white highlight on it. I'm assuming his hand is in a leather glove, but it does not read at all like a leather glove (leather is a very hard material to render).
Your edge control is lacking, especially around the sword guard, glove, and headband. You added that white highlight as a cheater move, and you know that. Use masks, use transparency lock, use the tools you have to create defined edges instead of just painting a white ring around your guy.
Overall, You should do more studies of the things you want to paint. You're getting too far ahead of yourself, and that's fine if you want to waste your time-- but this would not be worth your time to fix and finish.

The bend on her left leg makes it appear as if the leg is positioned towards the viewer, but her foot and it's profile come off as a sideways view.
