Was that done in full engraving style or a filter applied in post, do you think?

>> No.2218209

Given it's Android who did it, there almost certainly was a trick used to quickly do the effect (he's got a history of coming up with novel ways of using digital tools, it's practically his schtick). That being said, I'm not sure how you would easily do it.

Looks like he made a brush with an engraving texture and drew over the top.

>> No.2218254

>>2218234
I'm not sure how that would work really. I don't think it would look that clean and have that flow and variety within it. Wouldn't it look more like a standard rake brush?

If you look at the face, you can see the lines are broken up into a warped grid pattern, and it's not moire or anything. I think what's happening is that he's got a 3d map warping a texture of parallel lines. Possibly combined with a filter that responds to the values of the painting underneath and darkens/lightens the lines above it accordingly.

Watching his process is the most mind-boggling thing ever. It looks like total chaos. It also looks like it takes forever, but it's hard to tell.

>> No.2218740

>>2218698
If you have a layer of those etching lines that are all parallel then you can easily warp it with liquify or other methods to bend them around forms and make some bulge or thicker or smaller. You can lock the transparency or use clipping masks to change the value of the lines.

>> No.2218758

>>2218740
Yeah, but you can easily see the polygons that make up the structure, and he uses 3d forms in most of his pieces anyways.

Seen this one in person. It's quite large (took up a wall), and if I remember correctly then it's got a cooler cast to it overall but the red are stronger as well. The thing that struck me most about it was the ice. It doesn't come across in the reproduction, but the ice blocks seem to glow and emanate light, and they really feel like ice in a weird way (not like actual ice, but they still feel like ice). They draw quite a lot of attention to themselves because of this, and they have some very carefully handled hard edges in them and small detail.

I'm sure that one is breathtaking in person. I've seen a ton of paintings in person that absolutely blew me away, so I wrote down the title and artists and hunted down high res reproductions for my folder, and upon seeing them on my monitor they had none of the impact. Despite the reproduction quality seeming quite good.

>>2218885
Yup same. I usually look for multiple versions of a painting online. Often the highest resolution one is closest to that of real life, but not always. Eventually you can sort of make nice guesstimates for paintings on how accurate they are to the actual one, and if I can only find versions that aren't reflective of what it is like to stand in front of, then I do a bit of photoshopping to try to get it closer. A lot of paintings look much better with just a bit of colour correction.

there's nothing quite like the artistic blue balls of having your favorite pieces of all time languishing in a private collection.

Really? It's a nice painting, but I wouldn't even call it Repin's best, let alone out of all paintings. Not trying to insult, just curious why you like it so much. Personally I prefer the Dunn posted right above it.

When you're looking at works from a consumate master Repin, I'd say it really does come down to personal taste. They're all top quality, so to rate them is less an issue of the best one and more an issue of which subject matter you like the most.

That said, Ivan the Terrible & his Son will always be #1 Repin for me.

Well he does have better works and worse ones (as any artist does). But out of his top ones it would come down to personal taste yeah.
