As was Frazetta's. Mostly cheap fantasy/sci-fi and comic books in the 50s-70s. Nearly all of his work is commercial illustration.

This thread is godamn hilarious.
All you assholes are sitting around trying to talk about art like you have some deep intellectual understanding when most of you haven't even so much as taken an art history class, or even an art class. you just get all this secondhand "knowledge" from youtube videos and gumroads. You seriously think your criticisms of the work of these accomplished artists means something, like anyone should listen to you when you're a literal nobody, an anon in every sense of the word, as if you seriously know better than these renowned artists, but anyone who actually did know better'd be the one being trash talked here instead of participating. You're missing the point, just like all the d/ic/ks here always do. It's not about how good I am, it's about the reason I got where I am. That reason being humility. Instead of pretending to objectively know everything about art and thinking I was too good to listen to criticism I learned from people who were better than me and took critiques whenever I could get them, from professional artists and art directors. That's why I got my first professional illustration job when I was only 19 and continued from there. I don't fit with the rest of you because I strive to actually learn whereas all your heads are too full of ego to take in any actual knowledge. You all talk about the dangers of a hug box but the echo chamber of arrogance when hardly any of you are successful in any capacity is just as bad. I could do more to try and convince you, but over the years I've realized most of you will never get it, so I just come here to laugh at you.

Whether I tried to quietly suggest you all learn from those before you and try to do better, or shout it from the rooftops chock full of swearing, none of you will get the message, but you'll only hear it if I do the latter. For the record I got a perfect score on the art history exam at college, but it's completely irrelevant to why Frazetta > Boris so I didn't see a reason to bring it up. I've had this argument 1000 times with an art buddy who's really into Boris. One doesn't have to be on your godly level of philosophical knowledge of art, humility and life to realize Frazetta's brush strokes are looser and more energetic and that Boris overrenders and makes cheesy lighting/color decisions.

>Frazetta is the master of feet hiding.

The very painting you posted shows he's perfectly capable of drawing and painting them. What Frazetta is a master of is grouping shadows together and Feet and legs tend to often bleed into the shadow or detail cluster of the ground plane in his paintings as a compositional tool. There are tons of paintings and drawings of his where feet are showing though.

This noob statement that whenever a great artist doesn't draw 100% of the human body visible at all time, he's "hiding" something is utterly ridiculous.

So is the anon you're responding to. Being a working pro makes it very easy to stagnate--clients demand the same things over and over, you are discouraged from experimentation or changing work flows, you are pushed in certain directions artistically, you are forced to rely on the same solutions in order to meet deadlines, and you don't have the same free time or energy to devote to self growth.

As much as I love art, I've really become pretty bitter towards commercial work since I've started living off it (around 2 years now). Nothing like being a wrist for a design-by-committee type thing that isn't interested in your input and needs it to be done in a specific way that you know is shit but will sell because it impresses plebs.

Essentially. I think they are Japanese, but they do hire a ton of Chinese digital painters. It basically is a pay-to-play type thing (or paying helps you out a lot somehow? I've never played but know people who have). So it is easy to spend lots of money so they ended up making a fortune almost instantly and then hired any artist they wanted. A ton of big name artists have worked on it, both Asian and Western. Now though I believe they have switched to primarily an in-house model where they just have a few dedicated illustrators in a studio in Japan.

I call it the Mignola approach. Seems a lot of artists have just up an said FUCK FEET.

Also side note, but all these guys in this thread praising Boris (lel), Frazetta (yeah), but no Jeff Jones???? (S)He's clearly the superior one of the three.

Volkan Baga or Donato Giancola, for instance. Cool digital fantasy art is just the tip of the iceberg, anon.

I wonder what drives those guys so insanely hard and I'm asking myself if there would ever be a way to adapt the same sort of mindset and discipline. I hate being this spoiled western manbaby that I am fuckkkkkkk

It's partly in the culture where hard work is highly valued, and partly just up to the individual. You only see the successful asians here, but if you actually dig through asian art sites you will see there are tons of lazy artists and really shitty ones there too. There's nothing stopping you from working that hard except yourself.

I'm reminded of an anecdote from Rockwell's autobiography where a classmate came up to him and said "if I worked as hard as you I could be as good as Velazquez", to which Rockwell responds "so why don't you?".

Anyways, hard work and discipline is a skill like anything else. You can't flick a switch and suddenly have it, you need to slowly build it up over time. Start with an hour a day, then after a while go to two hours, then three, and so on until you are doing it as much as your schedule allows. This may mean giving up certain things to make more time for yourself, whether it be social outings or video games or browsing /ic/. Rigney claims he was impatient when he began, but over time he built up patience as a skill to the point where he could easily spend 200 hours on a single painting.

Also from personal experience, the easiest way to "work hard" is to have it not feel like work. If you can find a way to enjoy the process then the time will fly and you will be like "wow, I spent all day working and didn't even realize". Stop viewing art as a "grind", and see it is a path. If studies bore you, then find a way to learn that same information some other way. Maybe do an original illustration and have references on the side for things. So instead of doing spheres and cylinders of materials like you see people do (dumb exercise imo) then you will work on a painting and when it comes time to paint the materials in your image you pull up some reference and really observe it and try to implement it. It won't be as tedious as doing some boring materials exercise, but you will learn as much if not more.

Easy answer. Public education and a better economy.
I've been researching the western market for a while, and I've found two main issues/walls aspiring artist have to face: the educational wall, and the technological wall.
The educational bottle neck burst a little while ago, the "Noah Bradley rant" it's a good example of the symptoms of the actual situation. Just now, there's a new thread about Marc Brunet, one of many guys making money with the hords of art students left behind by the educational corporate system.

The other wall the technological one, is about tablets. While here in /ic people ask which Wacom tablet they can afford, asians just go to the point and get a big sized chink brand and sweep the floor out of westerners with a 50buck tablet.

TL TR. They don't make it "alone", there's an economical/social/political environment helping them to conquer the global market.
