Brushes in Photoshop used for applying details and texture, which the majority are usually custom made for different purposes like the basic brushes. When used correctly and properly they can make you work look great and will reduce the time it takes to finish your work. You can find brush packs on Deviantart and other sites providing free texture brush packs for different materials (skin, mineral/rock, vegetation, tech etc.)

Very good grasp of matching the hue, value, and saturation. Even the proportions are well done. Seriously, well picked brush strokes. As crude as they are, I still can barely distinguish your thumbnail from the painting. So I say well done.

As a texture study, however, brushwork was very crude here. I think you know that already. Seriously unsightly when zoomed in, but don't worry. That's a whole other skillset to work on besides knowing color/hue/value and shapes. It's a whoole other thing. You can do it.

most of these have drawing errors that wouldn't be there if they had traced. It's not as obvious since it's an octopus and not something like a human, so look closer. Open orig image alongside paintings and click between them. You'll see it.

people can look at the same piece and chose to study it in different ways. If you want to practice stylizing or interpreting something different, go right ahead bro, but there's nothing wrong with other people choosing to study something else.

I think you're misunderstanding why 'copying' is considered bad. You realize it's ok to do xerox art in order to learn/practice painting techniques? Or to learn how to draw what you see? It's not good if it's the only thing you do, or if you're copying as an actual 'piece', but as a study, it can be useful. Done in small doses, ofc.

the colors are in the general ballpark, but the transition of values and the values, in general, are what's holding this back. drawing seems well enough, but the way you tried to indicate the texture is abyssmal. you want the effect of the pattern, and it doesn't even reach all the way up to the eyes. even when i lean back and squint the texture doesn't work, it just feels lazy.

>>2211682
your values are crunched and you put texture on everything. do it again in black and white and stay true to the photo. take a week on it if you have to.

>>2212177
values crunched, some of the drawing is off, and you didn't indicate the texture very well - though it does work from a thumbnail.

>>2212329
this is working alright, but some of the drawing and value transitions are still off. also, your colors mud up super quick. color pick from the photo and see how the transitions work, and then see what you did, then just try to paint a small segment again. you'll learn a lot.

>>2212514
near-photographic thumbnail, awesome job. zoomed in i feel like it's overall a bit too sharp, and the pattern falls apart a little, but when im leaning back or squinting it all works perfectly. im guessing you just uploaded it larger than the size you had it zoomed at in photoshop.

not anon you were replying to, but here ya go. Value crunch basically means you squished the range. Your lights aren't as light and your darks aren't as dark, and there's not as much variation as in the orig. And you don't have as 'much' as you should either. If you can't see it, color pick it. Should pop out to you, esp once you plot it down on the corresponding spot of your painting.
