Well the time thing comes down to: is it worth your time to work for that amount of money? I would still quote people a flat rate, but I would calculate that in part by how long things take you to paint.

If you are slow and only making 5$ an hour on these commissions on average, then you are ripping yourself off. If you can knock out a 30$ commission in an hour then it's reasonable. But you should think about how much you are making and how much energy and time you are sinking into it.

Also realize that you are only going to get so many commissions. To make a living off of 30$ commissions would require you to take on an insane amount of them, and would also be a major headache when dealing with that many emails and clients.

Keep in mind consistency of planes. Where are we seeing him from? We can see the top of his skull so we are obviously looking down at him. If he was above everything why have you painted us looking down at him but up at the buildings?

Look at your buildings in the back and look at him they belong to two different perspectives. His wings look too frail to fly

>>2205745
this feels sincere. Keep going after things you like in your environment! Next time try looking at your chosen subject a bit longer and figure out what is the main appeal to you. Then try starting from that and work your way out. Once you've captured the main appeal you wont need to draw or paint anything else, the picture will be done and it will be a fine thing.

i see what you're saying but why can't he be tilting his head? obviously I fucked up if you're mentioning it but the statement seems weird

> If he was above everything why have you painted us looking down at him but up at the buildings?
I'm having a hard time seeing this. I just painted the flat in relation to the horizon. if you could do a quick little redline or anything showing what I'm doing wrong because I know the figure/enviro relation is totally fucked in my head but I literally can't see it

yea I was thinking about the wings as I did it I figured how they were positioned it showed that they were more aesthetic/gliding sorta thing rather than functionality, but I'll try to push more of a supernatural vibe to show what I'm getting at. I feel if he had huge wings it would make him look to bestial instead of intelligent or maybe I'm just making excuses?

this is sprias right? cool to see you posting again. digging the vibe and space you captured but how the tree, dog and whatever that thing in front is composed is bugging me

I agree with what >>2205919 said, but I agree with you that it's heavyhanded critique. I think the main issue is that the torso is drawn in correct perspective (the main masses support this, good job) but the head is drawn as if we were the same height as him (like, we're looking at him eye to eye). No, it doesn't look like the head is drawn from above, but it's still not correct.

And yeah that's definitely not sprias, though hes posting here every so often now. his compositions are way different, simpler. That's acidenema.

Art is whatever you make of it. Some people do it for fun as a hobby and there is nothing wrong with that. People who take it super serious and slave over it as a career are no more right or wrong either.

All that being said, if it isn't fun in some way, then maybe it isn't for you.

Every brush stroke on this canvas feels the same. Same size, same shape and motion, same feel.

What makes a brushstroke? Have some placed with a fast power. Some a gentle delicate placement. Some careful, some loose. Some large, some soft. Some interwoven, some separate. Vary it up, use them to tell a story, and to bring a strength to your image.

Excellent questions and critique, Thanks !
I wasn't paying enough attention to those points.
This is part of a study on Velazquez paintings, the idea is to use the painting Las Meninas as inspiration to make an entirely original oil painting using his techniques. So my starting point was the use of different planes of perspective in the composition, including things like light coming from a window/door placed in the back of the painting and a mirror/painting in the wall. Starting there i intend to include things i wanted to represent which is a sad facial expression, and a certain frailty in the closer figure ( I intend to use this photo for reference of her face). And the farthest figure is going to be looking through the door.

God I hate fags like you. Enough with the whole feigning humble bs. I don't know what your motive is because there are several reasons people do it. But just stop. No matter if you like or dislike your work talk with confidence, be straight up, be assertive, be honest.

People like you in art school just get their asses ripped in critique whether their work is good or not. It's because they are constantly afraid they're going to look egocentric and in the process make their work seem like shit just from their statements about it. If you have legitimate concerns about your piece definitely voice them so you can get feedback. But don't ever say some vague self deprecating thing like "I'm a horrible artist, please disregard". All we hear is "I'm a little pussy with no confidence and so you shouldn't pay attention because I'm not going anywhere". Get some balls son, fuck it in the pussy. Know what I'm saying?

Hi - I'm looking for input concerning the background of this portrait.

On the left is my original version that uses a hatching technique I've been really into lately. On the left is a just as detailed but simpler half-toned pattern.

The half-toned pattern is roughed in (especially evident around the hair), but hopefully it gives you a complete idea of how it looks. A friend of mine really liked the energy of the left portrait, but thought the right one added a nice contrast to make the face 'pop' more.

Which one do you guys prefer, and why? This is geared toward landing more editorial portrait work, so which one can you imagine appearing in a magazine more? I'm really, really torn between the two.

Also - this is from a study thread from many months ago. Does anyone have the original photograph by chance? I saved over it.

Thanks in advance for any help!

your color palette is poor compared to the focus that klimt has. In general your aping of his work feels derivative, you've gotta start from the beginning, working on your hand (that is, how you physically to draw and paint) as well as drawing from life, in order to build up a vocabulary for understanding visual media at all, including figure and composition, which it shows here that you need to brush up on.

To summarize:
-color
-figure
-composition
-ability to apply paint/paint cleanly

I am all for painting after different famous artists of history, a lot can be gained from studying what they do, but this right here is not a successful avenue for improvement.

The right one might work better for an editorial. Assuming it isn't a full page spread, it might be helpful to consider the white of the page and having non-rectangular images. Pic related.

I know next to nothing about editorial work though, so grain of salt and all that.

Thanks a lot for the input. I've shown this to many people in the past few hours and most people say to go with the left image. I understand that the half-tone background can be a bit of an eyesore, but I figured it might be a better alternative to the hatching pattern in the left one.

Use the biggest brush you can for any given thing. If it helps to get the edges right when using something so large give it is own layer at first. Don't go for smaller brushes or texturing until your values and depth and big shapes are down.

When you do it this way you see the issues in the painting easier, too - for instance, the forest lacks the variation in hues the figure has. Bring some of that brown you have there into the trees. Take the blue light from the background and light him with it.

The depth just isn't there. Find two or three photos that have the same perspective and a couple of other artist's work that has the kind of illusion of space you're going for. Look at how they broke up the space. You're breaking up the ground with a lot of little vertical grass and tree shapes, whereas really, space in a landscape is going to show up most from horizontal and overlapping forms. Watch light/atmospheric perspective in refs - how do other artists make it work on forms? Right now your back trees are floating - they didn't fade the same as your grass.

Just kind of generally watch edges and values. Thinking with bigger shapes and forms will help define the way light generally curves over the figure. Once you have that, the little specular highlights and the ambient occlusion shadows are a finishing touch, not your only way of distinguishing light hitting it.

You are correct, Im struggling a lot with depth. I think the biggest problem im having now is like you said - that I dont start with the bigger shapes. I do to a point but then im all about just drawing straight up, the robot for example is just drawn without any rough shapes.

Heres a speedpaint of how i drew it.
Next time ill skip the lineart completely, i felt that hindered me too, I just wanted to work on the next thing so i either worked very big or very very small on details as you can see on the grass.

I just feel like I'm in a vacuum and that no matter how much I draw or what I'm going to draw, it's not going to make an impact. It's not enough to draw for myself, I need an audience to fight to win over, I need pressure. I don't have that right now, so I have this big vibe of "whatever" coursing through me in regard to my own work.

so as is the only things that are complimentary are the sky and the orange light on certain things.

I could probably go in now and add alizarin crimson mixed with orange and brown to some areas on the flowers, and that will really stand out and look interesting with how much green and blue is on the painting already.

Nothing is that wrong with it, it just isn't at that high of a level. The left contour of the girls face on the upper left lacks form especially on that eye brow. It makes it look cartoonish. The shading under her chin is over simplified, the way it goes straight to the edge of her neck makes it look flat. The anatomy on the guy is off, the shoulder doesn't go into the bicep like that. That like between his forearm and upper arm is wrong. The way the tendon in his neck connects from his sternum isn't right and its in complete side profile which makes it look flat. The hands work. His face doesn't look 3d, but it's not bad. The way your laying your line in like chicken scratch is bad, do long flowing lines, not little scribbly bits. The shading on the dressed girl is oversimplified, looks amateurish. Her proportions are good though, nice job. On the two people making out or having sex, the arm of the guy is awkward, it looks like a peanut. If you got rid of the line at the shoulder it might help. The anatomy of his leg is off. The girl on the lower left is well done. It looks very photographic and it's so standard and without character that it's boring. Keep practicing, your definitely on the right track but still have quite a ways to go.

The first one is helped me to realize the natural value of each color compared with the grayscale. As you can see, purples and blues tend to be darker pigments. This combined with the cold and hot variation of each color gives you different gray tones.
A magenta will not be the same when blended with a medium yellow as that blended with a lemon yellow.
