I only know photoshop so I wont be able to help you with anything with sai. the colors are to pale. The scarf is heading in the right direction but the hair and skin seem to blend together and both are vacuumed into the white backround. (maybe an off white backround like grey or a deep tan might help)

Also flip the drawing so that the proportion issues are more prevalent and easier to spot. .

They have a better understanding of light and form. Your light source isn't clear at all, it comes from multiple directions and seems really weak.

You can try using layer types like overlay, soft light, hard light, and colour dodge. It should bring in some more saturation and interesting colour to your work, as well as stronger value statements. If you use an airbrush you can get some nice glows like OP.

You still don't have a clear light source. According to your picture, there are lights coming from both sides of the figure. But that doesn't seem to affect her arms/head/etc. Choose one clear light source and work with that, and then you can add things like ambient light and etc.

Damn, you nailed it. These are my "getting back into things drawing" but you're right in that I've been slacking off in my life drawings and have just been drawing from imagination.

Would you suggest I take a break from that and just grind out some studies for a while?

And for the moment I can't work on digital or do anything with a computer since I don't have one of those for the time being. I'll try to mess around with contrast on my phone for future images.

Overall, great advice, and just what I was looking for, thanks anon.

Or better yet, get some watercolors and try with those. Mixing the colors manually will force you to learn the proper technique. Just beware that with watercolors, you can only do 1-3 layers max or itll look like messy shit.

This is an old one. I've reworked Thalia and Clio a bit. If you know the 9, I challenge to guess who's who. Just an fyi, I changed Calliope from the Muse of Epic Poetry, to the Muse of Heroes for simplicity's sake and story reasons.

You have to go REALLY softly and really slowly. Color pencils are s pain in the ass, but they can look real nice.

Like, barely touching the paper x10+ layers, again and again and again. Also, make sure youre using the right paper. You need grained paper for color pencils. Also, I recommend you go for soft pencils, maybe eve wc wash as they blend better.

If you're going to colour the line art at least colour it according to what it represents, the tone you have right now is suitable for skin but it could be changed for the clothing and the hair especially.

Minor nit pick as well because its clear that you rendered after you drew the lines but the lines near her crotch should also follow the wrinkles you've put there, which are v nicely done btw.

The problem lies in the eyes, especially her left one. Draw the form of the skull beneath the face, and the overlay spheres for the eyeballs where the eye sockets should be, and once you have that, draw her eyes over the sphere for the eye.

Make sure you detail the eyes more. And by eyes, I don't mean pupil, but rather all the different parts that make up the eye itself, including the eyelids, the bridge from brow to nose, the eyebrows, the area between the eyes, the lashes, etc...

Don't go overboard with it, but do add a bit more detail to those areas, again, one you've drawn the forms beneath.

Give the same level of attention to the human skull as her body. Then it won't look so uncanny.

i keep stressing it because people like you keep underestimating it.

as for the "techniques" it's not that complicated, it's all there for you to see. i mean the majority of it is just the watercolor brush.
that's also what creates 80% of this "look". gradients are easy with watercolor brushes and masks help with that.
he may even have started in grayscale and bothered with color later.

OP asked
>How do I achieve colors like this?
and what do you think "colors like this" even means?
this isn't just some "effect", you fucking shitter.
there has to be a balance in the image, and it is his entire process that leads to this result.

No anon, you're mistaken.

I recommend you watch the video I gave to the OP so you better understand what he was looking for.

It's not "the watercolor brush." I work with watercolors a lot, they're my fave coloring technique in traditional, and digital watercolors aren't very different, they're just cleaner.

The smooth effect you see in that piece was done painting with gradients, which creates a very different effect from what watercolors can do.

Pic related is watercolors, as you can see, very different from what OP posted. I understand you're trying to be helpful man, and perhaps I got a little hot-headed and was a bit rude. So I apologize for that. But do try to understand that given the wording, OP was focused more on the technique used rather than learning values. Different techniques yield different results, no matter how well you know your values.

their bodies are very stiff (linework is nice and delicate but the underlying poses are to unbalanced and unappealing to make the lineart worthwhile.
Draw cylinders understand the space they are in, possibly use thicker lines and try to push a more dynamic angle or expression, the left hand of the bigger one isn't proportionate to the right even if the shape is close.
they figures are floating but to balance the bodies the shoulders and hips aren't clear in expressing anything since when people have skewed hips and shoulders they are generally inversed to balance the pose and when they both slant the same direction it looks odd and contrived.

Yeah.... I know. The more I work on her, the more I deviate from certain clichés.

The character is here, >>2202790 I'm playing around a bit with her outfit to sorta better fit the Greek/Roman theme of the story. It's based on classical myth but taken to the future.

The guns are casters, people use them to cast magic using sethyr, which is essentially etheric coal, if that makes sense. In other words, it's to mana what coal is to energy. People use magitech to manipulate mana, but she can also cast magic normally cause she's a homunculus, so it comes naturally for her. Other people can do it too, but most just rely on the tech rather than invest the years into learning the art.

I'm having a hard time coming up with a notable pose for casting magic that hasn't already been done before. I really like what FMA did, since the concept of circles ties really strongly to Hermetic tradition and I'm drawing very strongly from that. So I wanna dwell with circles too, not necessarily drawing them, but creating circular getures with the hands is a must I feel. It's just hard to be original here, so I'm playing around with different things till I'm struck by brilliance.

In the meantime I used her a a model for different acrobatic gun poses bith ripped off from Air Gear for practice, but also doing what >>2203964 suggested.

So just rip from FMA? There's already plenty of similarities since FMA also takes from Hermetic tradition... I dunno.

It just funny how putting your hands together can be such an effective gesture to signal an attack or a spell.

Well the easiest method would be to scan the image at a high resolution and then print it out again. But if that's not an option you could try your luck with a photocopy machine, they usually have a function that allows you to make enlarged copies. Not sure if the result would be decent looking since I've never tried this myself, but if you just want it to trace the drawing onto different paper it might be enough.

Alternatively you could try to analyze why the small version looks better than the large one you attempted (seems like you've already done that to a degree) and try to fix the large one accordingly. Maybe show it here as well so we can give you some pointers?

I don't often say this, but read the sticky.

Focus on form first and foremost. Work on making more complex figures out of cubes and spheres.

Forget lighting for now.

Also, but down the tablet, and pick up a pencil and paper. Most amateurs make the mistake of jumping into digital before mastering the fundamentals.

Traditional is your best friend, it's much faster to learn that way, and everything you learn transfers over to digital easily. If you don't do this, you'll find yourself overrelying on all the special photoshop features like layers and undo. They'll bevome your crutch.

Finally, work on you lines. Get some decent pens and practice drawing clean, smooth, fluid lines. Once you got that, get to working on that line weight.

Everything I just told you should take you a few months to get down properly. If you it right though, your work will increase tenfold. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

> special photoshop features like layers and undo. They'll bevome your crutch.

I never understood this mentality. This idea suggests that there's only one way to learn how to draw, or at least one "true" way: traditionally. /ic/ has been parroting this for years now.

I call bullshit.

Digital allows you to improve your workflow by not forcing you to work around the many limitations of traditional art. The way I see it, having useful features such as undo, layers, free transform and such allows you to express yourself much better, faster and with less frustration. First and foremost, art should be about presentation, not execution. No one cares if a medium is perceivable "easier" than other, or at least no one should.

In the end, it comes down to practice. How many hours and how much focus you place on your craft. The tools are irrelevant.

I speak from experience after becoming increasingly frustrated with traditional tools. If anything, I'd recommend that any aspiring artist tries as many mediums as possible until they find the ones they like the most. You should value your own experience above all else, you could grind on paper or computer for years only to find out later in life that you're really into oils or watercolors. Experiment a lot and find out what works best for you.

Peace~

ironically, doing things in traditional makes you think much more about the process. it's also more convenient, less distracting, and all around better for beginners.

I never said "draw digitally", I said you should experiment and find out for yourself. Know the value of knowledge instead of perceived knowledge. There's some truth to most things that can be said, information is powerful, you should learn to both embrace it and mistrust it at the same time. I know that very well, but thanks!

I'm just sharing some of my experiences in hopes of helping whoever choses to read them. /ic/ has some good people in it, which is why I keep coming back, but I definitely think someone should take a stand against these old fashioned ways of thinking some anons here have learned to love and spread, sometimes without even realizing it themselves, I'd imagine. The "anonymous" hivemind phenomenon should not be present in a board dedicated to artists.

Repeat something enough times and it becomes true(LOOMIS xInfinity). An art board should be open to everyone that has an interest in art, regardless of skill, medium, genre or content. /ic/ wants everyone to follow strict guidelines and forgets that for most people, art is a hobby. Most of us are not art students, we're just regular people who enjoy drawing.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't practice and actively try to get better. I do study from time to time, believe it or not. Honing your skill is essential and i'm not going to deny that, it's just that we should know by now that different people learn through different means and at their own pace.

I've always believed you should give advice tailored to the artist's goals and not your own.

I think the same, but how would something like this be done on a place like 4chan?

One of the biggest influences all over /ic/ is the sticky, so there is some potential for change if something is made prominent enough. I think the only practical thing is to modify or add to the sticky to cover more topics so that the same old useless bickering (about trad vs digi, anime, shitting on artists, constructive crit) would not happen. Whenever yet another retarded debate starts, one can point to the sticky , the retards can be shown the error of their ways, and everyone can be done with it. Or we need modifications to the rules.

But for that to happen we would need the support of mods.

>To me it's more than obvious that traditional art failed me where digital did not.
it's natural, since traditional is much less forgiving.
i must admit that now i also mainly practice digitally for convenience, but i still understand that filling up those sketchbooks did me good.

like i said, this is for BEGINNERS. traditional just allows you to draw so much more, for various reasons.
>in digital you can turd polish until you die of old age, traditional will force you to move on to the next sketch/drawing much earlier.
>you have a clearer sense of space and size.
>your hand and pen has a direct connection with the paper whereas with digital you don't
>no distractions
yes, it is a hassle in comparison, but in my opinion you gain much more experience through it.

Workflow is not something a beginner should even.be worrying about. A beginner needs to grind out like a motherfucker.

You can work much faster with a pencil than with a tablet when starting out, and you have much more control too.

Also, learning to manually MIX colors works wonders for learning tones and values later on.

Point in case, there's a lot of little things that add up over time if you learn traditional. If you can master traditional, passing all those skills over to digital will be s cinch. Whereas digital only artist will have gained less from their experience and will always be limited by their tools, etc...

If you don't comprehend this, then I recommend you too take a break from the tablet, and work on traditional for a while.

Traditional to digital is fundamentally the same thing, digital to traditional isn't. Capiche?

Lefty, I wanna see your work. Both digital and traditional. I wanna see if you're as good as you're acting to back up those statements.

An artist can only improve if they're constantly perfecting what they do best, and challenging themselves to work beyond their comfort zones.

Are there many ways to learn art? Ofc. But there's always the best way that will teach you the most as you go. Digital is merely a tool. No different from watercolors, oils, or any other medium. Skill is skill, period. However. Digital is also a very comfortable and convenient tool that can cause someone too pick.up a lot of bad habits along the way.

The simplest method is always the best. This is always true. If you wanna draw? Draw on paper. If you wanna get strong, lift heavy weights. If you wanna learn pick up, approach girls. There are no magic pills in life man, and no one is a special snowflake. The process is the process, and no one is above it. Mo matter what you do, it's akways blood, sweat, and tears, and many many hours.

You wanna talk experience? I did art school fr a year to learn the fundamentals. We worked strictly traditional. During that time, my skills in digital improved dramatically without me ever working on a tablet. Meanwhile, the times I focused on working digital, my skills in general would improve much more slowly.

As for my testament, here's some of my work:

>>2202706
>>2202814

Now I still have much to learn mind you, but I went from disproportionate anime drawings to that in a year focusing solely on traditional.

Working digital only is the art equivalent of only using machines when working out and totally forgoing free weights.

There are lots of little things that you.pick up along the way with traditional that digital will never teach you.

Well, I just went back and read his posts more carefully, and realized that he's a hobbyist. Which is fine really.

Personally, I'm in this to make a career out of it, so I pour a lot of time and money into learning and improving as much as I can. So, perhaps the sort of advice I give might not always be ideal for those who don't wanna delve too deeply into the subject. But on the other hand, thr knowledge and expertise of someone whose dedicating their life into being an artist will always provide useful insight.

So I guess people should learn to adopt the advise that best suits them on their own. So I agree with him on that. On the other hand, not much of a point in openly disagreeing with my original statement, all things considered.

He can offer an alternate view and that's fine, but calling what I stated as "bullshit" when he has such a narrow view on things is pretty ironic.

The only thing he definitely called bullshit was that there was only one way to learn.

Even though I advocate starting traditionally always, even if it's just to instill good practice habits, I have to admit that there are many ways to learn and thinking that a one case fits all is a generally bad mentality to have.

for your current skill level, this isn't too bad!! the pose is pretty tricky, so it's good that you're trying to do some hard shit and not just sticking in your comfort zone. it feels very stiff and floaty, but those things will come as you become more confident in manipulating the figure.

you seem to know a bit about anatomy, judging by how you've got the bump of the deltoid and the styloid process of the ulna, so i assume you're already doing some figure drawing from life/photos. which is good!! when you're practicing drawing from reference, really try exaggerating the line of action and push the pose to its limits. don't feel like you have to copy the reference 1:1, if something doesn't feel convincing then change it up a bit. straighten straights and round out curves, really make an effort to ground the figure and give it a sense of weight. the griz and norm tumblr has a lot of good life drawing tips, and walt stanchfield's 'drawn to life vol. 1' is very good at explaining this sort of stuff.

once you become more confident in working with the figure and exaggerating the action, exaggerating the proportions comes naturally. in and attempt to push the action of a pose you'll often find yourself stretching or squashing proportions to sell the pose better, so i suggest you work on that first! also, check out other artists you enjoy and see how they exaggerate their drawings. where are they placing their straights? where are they rounding things out? where and how do they simplify their anatomy? and why?

in your drawing, the figures feel stiff because there's no variation in the pose-- it's all very straight. the line of action for both would be a straight line from the head to the feet! the floaty-ness also stems from that, the figure in front looks unaffected by the figure in the back (although this might have been intentional if the guy in the back is like a ghost or whatever). i'm out of characters now, but i hope this kinda helps!

also!! i want to just point out how ridiculous this comment is.

>how are we supposed to crit something that's not finished?

that kind of mindset is crazy!! why would you not want critique for a work in progress? instead of using a car analogy, let's talk about art, because this has to do with art. if you're working for a client, are you going to finish and entire piece before showing it to them and asking for revisions? probably not, you're going to show them several works in progress for tips and advice on things that need to be changed. this dude is asking for advice on the poses and proportions, and he gave use exactly what we need to work with, empty templates. this way, after receiving some critique, he can easily make changes to his work. if he brought in two fully coloured and clothed figures and then got critique in regards to the stiffness of the poses, he'd have to scrap literally everything in order to change them.

please don't post such aggressive statements if you don't know what you're talking about! you're the reason /ic/ is more well known for being an elitist shitheap than a place to go for advice on art.

I really like your style, looking forward to seeing this finished.

Here are some things I noticed:
Either the nose isn't properly centered or one eye is closer to the nose than the other. There's generally not a lot of space between the eyes, but that might be intentional and part of the stylization.

I'm not entirely sure what's going on with her feet, I'm guessing we see the soles of her shoes? If so try to make that a bit clearer and make sure that the shoes actually have the same shape, right now they look pretty different.

Her face seems lumpy, the toes look weird and the shading makes no sense.

Other than that I'd say the hips and thighs are too thick for the body type, but that's just preference.
