i should try to crit.

the hair on the black woman is scratchy and inconsistent. you include vague allusions to abstract art and surrealism but only surface level stuff, so it breaks the illusion that you know what you're doing.

the "tears" coming out of the cats eyes and the stitched hatching near its tail imply a "creativity" and "freedom" to your images, so it makes the viewer scrutinize parts that aren't as interesting.

It makes it so recognizable imagery ruins it, or is secondary to the surrealist/abstract stuff. i see stuff like how the neck and hair are shaded expressively, with little thought and more feel behind it, but that clashes with how sterile and recognizable a bunch of cat faces and human figures look.

this all just blends together to be incredibly boring for how adventurous you imply that you are.

If I had to pick the parts of the drawings I'd work on keeping the feel of for a whole drawing and leaned into more it would be the inconsistency and randomness of the old woman's neck, the black woman's hair, the tears coming out of the cat's eyes, and the hatching near the cat's tail.

apply that to a whole drawing. don't just make them the secondary parts of an illustration to add flavor, make them the whole drawing.

all this is assuming you want to bridge the gap from illustration into fine arts.

idk what planar structures are, and I actively avoid an understanding of anatomy. It makes my figures more lively if I just draw what I see and don't try to think too much about it. Also I'd argue I have an understanding of light, maybe just not the means to execute on it technically yet.

There are a few things you can do, and they depend on whether you're drawing from imagination, using a reference, and so on. If you're drawing from reference, you can use a rule like the length of your pen or pencil, or even a finger. Drawing a grid can also help as well, and it helps anchor your figure as well. It's important to make sure your measurements are consistent - make sure your ruler is of finite length, and that you're using the same eye to measure when you do.

Does that help at all?

perspective is pretty off, major technical issue. the foreground feels like it's from a high horizon, while the midground feels like it would be lower. in terms of projecting your focal point out (the people) i would emphasize the silhouette so that it's more apparent. also half the painting doesn't really have anything (top half). place something there to lead the eye out as it drifts from the focal point, maybe clouds, tree branches in the foreground, or maybe fireworks that were already set off

I like the trunk from on top of his head that is raised like that. Might be good to show a drawing of it when it is lowered on the head normally too.

Design on this though is pretty weak. The anatomy of the creature isn't well researched, the arrangement of bags and things are ugly and random, the armour on the creature isn't functional, the ropes are all the same thin kind no matter what they are supporting, there's no way for the guy to get up and down from the creature, etc. It just not that well thought out.

The scrawl at the bottom that is like a graffiti style writing is illegible. Just write normally, the whole point of it is for easy identification of the piece. It took like 5 minutes to se it just said "creature design".

>> No.2198582

Cool man. You need to update your tumblr more.

This one seems a bit preoccupied with swooshy abstract shapes, and the actual design is getting lost. What is the design of his helmet thing? What is the red? blood? paint? Is this sci fi or fantasy? It's all very unclear. All it needs is 15 minutes of working towards clarity.

>bottom that is like a graffiti style writing is illegible. Just write normally, the whole point of it is for easy identification of the piece. It took like 5 minutes to se it just said "creature design".>>

Yeah, I really struggled with this one. I am more used to do a hard surface stuff. Had no idea how to tackle bags etc, so I just put some stuff randomly there, for example the biggest "pouches" on the sides are just there to fill the space. I was looking through Feng's drawings and he does it really well, I guess my visual library is really weak when it comes to this stuff. I will make sure to write more clearly next time, just couldn't help myself this time since It was a pain in the ass to force myself to finish it. Thanks for critics, anon!

Yeah it's tricky. I think probably the handling of a pack beast loaded with bags and stuff is this one by Jim Murray: http://cdn.dota2.com/apps/dota2/images/comics/awhy/wallpaper/wp_02_1280.jpg

Obviously it is more stylized than what you are going for, but if you study it you will see just how brilliant his design is. Every shape is well thought out to have variation from the others but still fit in the whole, he has different materials and patterns and clasps and seams, and he has a nice amount of identifiable shapes in there rather than just boxes and rounded boxes like you have Check out that awesome halter (harness thing on the head. It's got great shapes, the hanging straps that were used in jousting design, it's got that cool braid thing over the horn, there's that ring piercing on the horn etc. Just everything is fun and playful and thought out to be visually interesting.

So even if you don't push it as far as that example which is pretty extreme, these are things you should be thinking of. Another great person to look at is Clement Sauve, also a bit cartoony and stylized, but INSANELY GOOD design. He can make something as boring as some wires or a bag, and then do variations on them to make them super interesting.

Thanks, and sorry for late answer. Yes, I am recently using a grid all the time. I start it by doing a rough sketch with perspective guide (horizon line and bottom lines for x and z) and then when going into a bit more detail I use a persp tool ( this I think https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Mtrrbz-1Co ). This way I can focus on drawing and have more or less precise perspective. I used to practice perspective a lot, so I can do without any grid at all, but too many times I found myself wasting time trying to figure some more tricky part out. Cheers!

I meant just hand made lines here. I do it so I don't end up drawing a shot from exactly the same angle as it would happen with premade grids. It keeps things a little bit more random IMHO.

i like the colors. but the comp feels cramped/ has perspective problems. like that lampost close to the tree needs to be shorter to be in proportion with the ones in the background, and drawing bigger because it's closer to the picture frame. and there's the tiny, tiny bridge.

lighting also seems confused. why is the direction of light opposite from where the sun is? why does the tree have edge lighting from both sides? (it's possible for that to happen but the source would have to be right behind it) why are there no shadows?

i know it's a sketch but i think you should start looking at references if you're no already.

About the drawing in general, his legs are too far apart. His whole hips seem to be far behind the torso, and the pants you chose make it look like he has a huge ass. I would also recommend for you to study faces. His eyes are to close, and look cartoony as fuck, his eyebrows are inexpressive, his nostril doesn't look tridimentional. His teeth are all wrong, even for a cartoon, as his lower teeth should be thiner than the upper ones.

His pose, face and clothings are pretty unintimidating. First I would recommend you look for the badass nazi uniforms for reference. I believe russian uniforms are pretty cool as well. If you are going for Castro he has to look less oficial and more like a guerrilla combatant. This halfway look isn't cutting it. Also, he may need a beard, a hat, hair? Something needs to be a simbol, you know, like most of these guys had mustaches.

For details, as you look for reference, try to integrate medals, an armband, simbols in the cap, some other colors to break this awful wall of green. Also don't forget your evil red.

Something about the eyes piss me off, fix them.

Thing about charcoal is that you have a unique asset other outlets don't have, you can redo it over and over. Trust me, rub it all off (with your hand) and it'll leave a faint linework, then draw it again. You WILL see improvement in the overall quality.

It's shit regardless. The inking is ok, it's what makes this look kinda good, but then, the anatomy is all wrong, and I expect you to tell me it's exaggerated on purpose, but even if it is, the results aren't pleasant to look at.
Her huge bulbous head, long neck, the skinny arm and her hand which is positioned in an impossible angle where it only shows two fingers are the most jarring mistakes.
Then, more subtly, the shadows are terribly placed, they don't seem to have a clear light source, and the way they give her body no volume at all.
That shadow under the arm specially, which makes the arm feel like it's detached from the body as the shadow goes all the way up to the side of the shoulder.
Also, it's made with a pencil, and clashes with the inking.

Go back and revisit the fundamentals, anatomy, light and shadow and shit.

Your image already has a strong silhouette, and the subtle value shifts you've got going now are actually nice. You wouldn't want to break that up by adding lots of lights. However, I would agree that you should push your blacks all the way. Think 90% dark, 10% light. You don't want 50/50.

I don't think so, they make different points, he's not pointing to change shapes, he just paint over it to make real contrast to read forms well, and also improved the mask, as it's flat and boring on his drawing, it has so many lines around, but no huge planes constructing forms, imagine a car design like that, it would be non sense, if it seems to respond no utilitie, then it's not designed, therefore ugly

arm design is so thin at the end while chest is huge (but not buffed)

None of those things follow logically from the other, necessarily.

I think the first design is more original, >>2199894 just looks like typical batman with a sword. It's true, that by bringing in some lights you can see the forms more clearly, but he'd be sacrificing the strength of silhouette and unique qualities of the overall image. Also, by enhancing it with some well chosen specular highlights, you're creating the right metallic feel, like blackened iron, the other one could be plastic.

The head is nice, but you need to work on anatomy for body. I think it would help to get a nice ref for the body.

The dick could be a tad bigger, and more in shadow. Also, it looks really out of place right now (haha) because it's more rendered than the body, but I think it would look nice if the whole figure, including the dick, was low contrast, and roughly rendered (you just need to refine shapes a bit more, again, get some ref.)

I wanted to use daggers at the beginning, but at the same time I really wanted to design some kind of armor, and that makes him to heavy to use agility based weapons. gaunlets were actually my second choice, but I dropped it for the same reason I didn't go for daggers. Then I kept sketching this big badass two handed sword in his hand and this is what I ended up with. The design of the bat chest plate combined with the spiky gauntlets really screams 'batman', maybe redesign those. Perhaps the bat plate could be more like a coat of arms, a kind of naive old timey drawing of a bat, like how lions and dragons were drawn on coats of arms.

I like the helm then, if you were going for 'bat inspired' instead of batman.

it's called color dodge because you need colorzz!!
stick with left or middle one, values are so dark on middle one, cut down the light spots on the left (seems to bright righ now) and add more brighter values, it has too many planes, make them tell how perpendicular they're to the lightspot and also mind using a light to cut the part in shadows, the most darker place is always when bright and darkness forms meet
play with opacity and work lights in new layers, in few of them as you light almost nothing

I think it will add a lot to the page for 5 minutes of your time. Another fun thing to do is to do a military pass of your creature. Not like a ready for war military, but more of a military parade sort of look. You need to highlight (or better yet un highlight) the darker places from which the light source(s) cannot reach; doing so will really pop out the building and bring a realistic vibe to it. In other words shade the darker areas.

The style you're going for does not require much criticism as it's not going for realism.

Also I'm in love with the texture you chose for the buildings

I'm looking at the promotional art for Prime Hunters, and the box art for Prime Hunters: First Hunt and Prime 2.

It looks like they generally plant the palm of the hand on the medial side of the gun then have the fingers wrap on top. You have the palm on top then the fingers wrapping to the lateral side.

For the promotional art, pay attention to the posture of the spine, whether one side of the rib cage tilts forward, the angle of the shoulders, the bend of the elbows, and the comparative height of the elbows. It all works as one, so what you feel is the main problem might actually have some underlying issues that need addressing first.

It's really "popular" and I see it everywhere. It's just like the illustrator's red nose syndrome, and chromatic aberration.

If you're doing some sort of schoolgirl loli, or any other weak insecure character it might be appropriate. This looks like an action hero or something so the way the lower body is posed contradicts the upper body and the gravitas it tries to project.

That is how I started out. Part of learning your fundamentals is doing away with this and learning to draw a clear line.

When you go get a signature from an artist or they make a little drawing in the art book you bought, they make clear strokes, they NEVER chicken scratch then erase. That's what you should aim for.

This whole image has some weird scale. Visually everything takes roughly the same 2d space, even though some things are super far or super close. I would vary your shapes more. Get some ref. Colours are also weird, overly warm foreground, overly cool bg. Would hte rocks be that red? Probably they'd be more neutral. And probably they would have some cooler upper planes. The balance/construction of the rocks is odd too. Did you actually look at old ruins to see how they were formed? They don't really look like that.

Imagine that your image is a 2d graphic shape, there is no depth. Look at it in an abstract sense.

Now see how the foreground rocks, the midground ruins, and the bg pillars are all almost identical in visual size even though they are different distances from us? You are flattening your image and making it feel more boring than it needs to be because of this. Right now your scale is really hard to tell. Those clouds for example look pretty close to us and like they are almost touching hte ground. How can you give appropriate depth and scale? Don't rely on just a value shift, use other cues like size, detail, and shape to help as well.

Dude your work looks good, ok. The kind of advice you need is much more refined and educated that the kind you will find here.
At first glance, there's something off with her expression, but that's fixable with a couple of pencil lines. If you do it again from zero it will come good for sure.
Then you have the anatomy on her upper body, knowing basic body figure you can create cool shadows and cloth folding around her muscles and bone structure. But any drawing teacher can show you that on the spot easily. Find some drawing art class nearby, it doesn't have to be "famous" or anything, just a normal drawing teacher will do. You have talent so you just need some basic pointers, and then is all about daily practice and repetition.

Very nice for a first attempt. The blue background though isn't in harmony with the skintone you used. There is a bit of a disparity where it isn't getting the right feeling across of either a sunny bright saturated image or a more subtle one.

I desaturated the background and simplified some things to try to harmonize it more.

Also a bit of a personal taste thing, but I am not a fan of the dry brush look that zedig's brushes give. It fills the image with a subtle texture that is fill of hard edges in a very repetitive nature. You can use the same brushes but with the mixer brush to get a more wet oil feel and some softer edges. I took it over the entire painting which may have been a bit extreme, but try it out in combination with what you are already doing.

I only had a few minutes before the nurse shut the door

Dude just stop. Those heads look all terrible. Study skulls and construction from memory. Yours is a chickenscratch shit fest with perspective errors left and right, stupid expressions and unlikely facial features

What a shit thread, beginner drawings left and right

Values are too bright, shit blending on nose and cheek, shitty color choices, shitty visible brush strokes, shitty textured brush stacking, cliche and uninspired design

I'd recommend ctrl+paint unplugged

I don't think I improved in the way you wanted it except the design perhaps, I added some cool nails to the forhead. Eitherway thanks for the crit, even though i didn't understand everthing.

It looks correct, albeit extreme.
not a helpful critique, but I really like it.
you can really feel the cheekiness of the the character. what tools did you use\what inspired you?

Design is pretty good. Maybe some small tweaks like how the feathers come out of the helmet, or what the pattern on his tunic is.

Biggest problem is the pose, it is super awkward. Try standing with a broom or something and getting into the pose in front of a mirror. How do you naturally hold yourself? What feels comfortable? Try to get into the pose you drew--does it feel weird and forced?

What do you want us to say to this?
Do you really expect anything other than: "Flip your shit, but it's still shit" or "Definitely the worst tho".

Okay. This is supposed to be Tom Brady. I'm a 16 year old amateur (obviously) I just got a sketchbook and I'm using a extra smooth Prismacolor pencil. I already know that I have a tendency to draw unrealistic, large eyes that are a bit too far apart. Anything else I should work on? Thank you so much. Critique as much as you can.
