And it's not encouraging to just say "don't give up!!!" It'd be encouraging to show those artists where they went wrong in their pursuit and how to make it better.

what anatomical issues do you see? I mean it's obviously heavily simplified but that would mean it's very glaring which is kind of worrying me. I'm not sure what you mean by arbitrary shadows, other than maybe that dimple under the end of the left ribcage was exaggerated too much.

The arm on our right isn't sitting in space properly. Try out the pose yourself and see where you arm goes, and then pay attention to how that space interacts with the breasts.

It's a super stylized character, you can't just "redline" a "Powerpuff girl". The only rational thing to do is to make an effort to portray a more "Stylish" approach to the problem and let him decide what to embrace and what to throw away from it.

>Do I have a chance to get good someday?
I'd say yes, based on your way of (or attempts at) simplifying forms and details like her hair and jewelry. Her eyes are seriously freaky though. I think you need to establish the proportions first instead of going right into the details. As to how to get those proportions accurately, it will take some practice, so seek out the resources (you can start with the sticky) and keep on with those videos.

Another thing is to try to work from life instead of a photo. It's that a photo can have its own way of distorting (it's already interpreting the image for you when you should be the one to do that), so you don't experience the visual information as you should. Also try to be more mindful of each stroke you put down. Although they may be small strokes, each one should serve some purpose.

If you just started, then remember you can post to the beginner thread >>2193514 as you do any basic exercises.

Top left draws attention because the sky is sucking the palm tree into it - other foreground objects like palmtree and ballcap applejack are clearly drawn above the sky - brush strokes show which layer each color was drawn on.
upper left shows sky was drawn on top of the trunk.
Same w/ base of the other palm tree - clouds sneaking on top of the trunk, making it seem like weird mist in the midground instead of in the far background.

this can be easily corrected by coloring from background to midground to foreground after your sketch is finished.

due to high contrast areas drawing eyepaths, the small of her back/meaty waist draws more attention than her ass.

Flowers on bush look like a last-minute jabbed add-on, instead of intentional stylization of flowers.

Overall I enjoyed looking at it - Good use of supersaturated colors.

Neat colors, but you should look for some balance between cold/warm tones. Try to make cast shadows a bit colder so they really pop out and provide atmosphere. Look up Karin Jurick, I think you'll like his stuff.
Really digging the drawing itself, but honestly the background screams "unplanned", because of how tighter the trees and the girl are displayed.

Pretty cool idea, and the depth is well depicted. I can't decide whether the smudges around his tail are a good thing, but the kelp pillars are sure brushy in a positive manner. Also if this is the whole composition, I guess the mermaids could be placed a bit higher on the canvas.

>>2195963
This is somewhat uncanny, the second one looks like a mannequin. I guess it's the stiffness as others have mentioned. The clothes overall are pretty good, though, specially on the first girl.
I think you just gotta stop drawing "prefab" parts, look at how Girl 2 has one feet identical to Girl 3 and the other one identical to Girl 1. And both 2 and 3's torsos are exactly the same.

Left one looks better imo, based on the left-side character:
- Left leg is more visible + gives more to work with for portraying depth
- Her head tilted downwards looks more natural, like she's gliding away from a scene and looking over the shoulder of the right-side person.
- Cape seems to match the direction it feels liek she is flying (towards the upper-left).

The second pose doesn't feel like it makes sense. Again, based on the left-side person:
- Her head is tilted upwards more, so it looks like she's focusing on flying in the direction of whatever is out of frame on the upper-right side (her stiffened arm feels like it portrays this too, but the legs not as much).
Yet, the cape of the right-side character wouldn't match this, as it obviously gives the impression that they're moving towards the upper-left (it would be against her body or blowing to the side otherwise).

Good thing about tattoo business is that you can get away with a lot of things. I've seen far worse than this tbh, and people doesn't care, they just want a tattoo.
You should keep on working on this, tattoo is a safe job field, work on your designs and you will be making money for sure.

About your angel, don't take my over piant as a "correction", but as an example of what I think a tattoo should express. You need to stylize objects to give them a solid and powerful appeareance. Like the wings on your drawing looks weak, and "dry", the feathers are too little and complex, you have to simplify everything.
Search the works of Leyendecker one of the best illustrators ever, see how simplify hair, clothes, anatomy, it's the perfect example to follow.

And as a final note, I don't know what kinda person is your friend, he shouldn't get a tattoo of a hot demon, if he still wants an angel/demon and he is a stright guy, your original design would be a mistake. It looks gay, and there's nothing wrong with that, but you have to be very aware of that sort of things. Because maybe some guys won't like your designs and you will not understand why. That's why you have to fill your head and visual library with all sort of styles, if you're going fot the tattoo business you should chec Frazetta and Luis Royo for starters. Good luck m8.

Also you can have this example I did from your drawing, is your design tbh. Use it and make some bucks. You can add something to make it better, the spear tribal needs some polish too.

I think opening up the composition was a good call, but the sea part looks incomplete. Mostly because the clouds are uniform in size and shape and there is little to draw the eye back into the painting after looking at the right side.
I can't give comprehensive crit but one other thing is that because you were revising your piece and aiming to "correct" certain areas, they became stiff. The back of her purple top had a rich expression and texture which is mostly gone now. I personally liked the chalky texture a lot and it seems too smooth now.

I see some supports fading into the back but no hint of any structure beyond that. I think the sky is a strong point so to preserve it, maybe a crane of some kind would work, with the screens suspended from it. There are some screens like this if you google. There're lots of references to find solutions to your super hero designs. The american comics are very rich in typical "superhero stance" examples.
I sketched a couple of those superhero common treats, like the flat and straight hand when flying.
And the feet, the feet are VERY important. I added more space in the bottom to make the feet stretched pointing downwards.
Doing feet, and footwear designs is fun and very important too.
Have fun and don´t give up.

Man I always admired people doing actual paintings.
I think there's two main issues easy to fix with your dragon. The first one is the chest area where the neck starts. There's nothing there, you need to give him some pecs and thick and powerful neck coming from there, like horses have.
Second issue the tail, tha start of the tail have to be thick like in a crocodrile.
And third I made some tweaks on ther "arms" and legs, the arms are too thick and rounded, it's a waste of an oportunity to draw some nice muscles and cool silhouettes.
I hope it helps, keep at it and don't give up.

That's kind of my point. most of the criticism on the show seems to be attributed to the fanbase that watches it. As far as actual content the show really hasn't done anything to warrant the negative stigma that it gets on chans. At least it hasn't done anything that I haven't seen done on other (less popular) shows at least.

To be honest I don't really consider myself an sjw and am really trying to look at it from a neutral perspective.

I've only watched a few episodes and looked through the character designs but Steven is annoying as fuck and acts exactly like the people who watch the show. He's devoid of any worthwhile personality. I'll admit the world building seems to be interesting and well thought, but my friend told me it was just piling shit to more shit ala Homestuck style. Also it's not funny, the humor is even worse (and randumbb XDXDDdxD) than Adventure Time, except AT gets away with funny scenarios due to how ridiculous it was to begin with, kind of like Gumball except more grounded in reality. The only reason why it's so popular is because it's "breaking the mold" and being xdXDD randumb with both the narrative and character designs. I say all this but honestly it's not that bad. But it's not good either.

Yeah true, I think a part of why I was struggling is I was losing sight of where I wanted it to go. I was getting too caught up in the design and shapes, and forgetting about the image.

It started out though as wanting to paint a very high key image, one that captures the feeling of air. I wanted a bright crisp sun where the air is fresh and cool with a subtle breeze. And of course to paint an angel, so it must have a somewhat beyond reality feel to it, even if only a small amount.

I've been looking at lots of golden age illustrators lately, so wanted to treat it in a designy simply manner, very controlled and illustrative.

Does that help?

>> No.2197054

hey, I'm not sure how these threads works, but I'd like to see if there is an artist available to do a thing for me...?
I have this OC that has been bothering my head around...
Background: Her name is Akanksha Pritha Vishala and she is the third generation of this Indian family that moved to the US.
Akanksha is a married woman that always was more sensitive and spiritually mature than the average girl, she was aware of this but never occurred to her to use her skills
in anyway that could benefit herself. The thing is that she isn't really tailored to work in today's world and she keeps failing in her swings to keep a job. Besides,
she doesn't seem to be able to give his family a child, and this is rising the tense mood between the couple. After the last forced resignation, she decides to explore
the Occult and to try to make some money of it and to find a way to get pregnant. Eventually, she attracts attention from people of the black market,
they send her magical items for analysis and stuff. She ends up with an magical stone named the Red Stone from Asia, an item described as being of
enormous power in many legends and myths across the East, but that nobody was able to use it's power in the present days. She becomes kinda obsessed with the stone and spends
months studying it and trying to decipher how it works. This mad dedication takes a tool on her financial gains, family and friends, her husband asks for the divorce
and all that jazz. This dedication however makes the stone able to peek her fears, struggles and wounds of the past. One night, Akanksha dreams that the stone turned itself
into a shadow and that they made love. She later discovers that she is pregnant and that the stone is gone.

>> No.2197056

>>2197054
After nine months, she gives birth to a crystallized stillborn. The deliver almost kills her, and, in her poor conditions, she is certain that she is going to die.
While she hugs her dead baby, they fuse. After waking up, she finds out that now she has four arms with red stones in the palm of each hand. After some dedication to
uncover the stones properties, she figures out that she can fuse living beings if they are in touch with one of her four arms. Now that she doesn't have the object of
that flourished her mad obsession anymore, she is able to recover from the madness that she caught herself into, and decides to take the control of her life back.

Appearance: being Indian, she has brown skin. I like the stereotyped features: big nose, black eyes and big hair (braided?). The way I picture her, she doesn't really has any curves and is more likely to wear long skirts, or a mix of Indian's tradicional clothing and the modern american style (hipster-like). A piercing in the nose wouldn't be bad. The red stone should be circular in the palm of her hands, of in a drop-aspect if it's still a jewel.
In my head, it could work in a Mignola or Kevin O'Neill style.
...so, can any artist be a good boy and bring Akhanksha to live?

Well that's a valid gripe I suppose. I personally find the designs good and we'll streamlined for animation but I understand if you can't get past it.
>>2197040
Hmm well I do agree that one of the shows strong points is also one of my major gripes with the show. With only 11 minutes to wrap things up the characters tend to resolve plots realistically which is nice whereas other shows that run for the full 22 min will pad the filler time with the same tired "I can't believe/won't forgive you" bullshit.

At first I liked the idea that a character like Steven could fuck up, explain himself, and then be forgiven by his peers. But after a while I realise that he just keeps fucking up and that is anoying. But to be honest it is still in keeping with the overall plot (creators younger sibling) becuase my own relationship with my younger sister is just like that.

But despite that I feel that the show still does much more right than it does wrong and is not nearly as random as adventure time was. It actually reminds me of hey Arnold in a lot of ways.

First time painting/doing a study. I've played around with my tablet but this is the first time I tried to make a final piece. I'm having hard time continuing mainly because the nose is so fucked and I'm realizing that I don't how to render much further on a lot of the stuff. I was gonna post on the beginner thread but I don't think I could get a good critique there. Also I'm not painting this low res, I purposefully did it for the sake of this thread.

Read first chapters of fun with a pencil by Andrew loomis. Your painting lacks a clear understanding of the references form and proportions. Your values are also way too bright and poorly blended.

This pretty sad but I actually have already read and practiced loomis, vilppu, hampton, etc. I can draw three dimensionally but when it comes to painting, all that goes out the window. All I focus on is getting values right and I can't even do that. I don't really think about my reference's form so I guess this is my main problem?

I'm doing this for the packaging of a role playing game, and I have no idea how to apply shadows on the character ( and my anatomy sucks in this one...)

The space between the eyes and the nose is too wide. Also the the dust/grease on her face reads kinda funny, almost like shadows.

The way you drew her face made her look too manly. Her face should be rounder, the details cleaner, at least until you learn how to control the features.
Her nose is too far down and her nostrils are too detailed and huge. Her left nostril is too low, by the way.
The shape of the mouth is ok, but it's also too low on the face because of the nose.
Her jaw is too squared, as is her cheekbone. The contour of the face is too wobbly, which would be fine for a man, but should be cleaner for a girl.

So, because her face is already kinda manly, and the dust on her face heightens this impression. At first glance it looks like an out of control 5 o' clock shadow, then some kind of camouflage, then you realise it's grease, and, well, few things are manlier than a square jawed lowbrow mechanic with grease on his face.

For the last part, the grease on top of her eyebrows, the line is too hard, and it looks like she was suposed to have some Michelangelo ass muscly forehead. It's that combined with the shape of the right eyebrow that give her some mean dude look that, unlike the other features, I can't unsee. Even after I am past the first impression and understand what it's supposed to be.
