Many non-artists don't really understand how important constructive criticism is. They might like what you draw and go "that looks good!" and think you're being overly negative when you try to find flaws in your own stuff.

I've literally watched a handful of some of my favorite artist stagnate when they got into tumblr. and some even changed their really good art into this strange simplified version of their art just to make it more "tumblr comfortable".

That site fucking ruined a lot of good artists because it's not good for criticism, even deviantart was almost good for it, it's because EVERYTHING you do on tumblr is published, so unless you can somehow pull an artist to the side and tell them they're fucking up, most people are just gonna stand back because they don't wanna be in the limelight and people watching that they're not praising the artists.

I've seen one dude criticize and artist and the artist's fans attacked the dude, went through his blog trying to find anything that made him look like an asshole. insulted the shit out of him.

There really needs to be a new art platform, since everything else is pretty much dead and tumblr isn't good at it.

The issue isn't better friends. People who've most likely never opened a book on drawing or painting obviously wouldn't know how to critique these kinds of works. They can t just up and say "the anatomy of this is blah blah." or "the perspective is a little off."

What he could do is find local artists who do similar work and group up with them for help. Most likely around art schools or skills centers.

While this may be because these artists started on deviantart young and willing to learn, it doesn't mean that they didn't learn and got better during the time they were on DA. I WATCHED them get better.

I've discussed this with so many people and we provided sources with each other of the same experiences where we watched other artists , who we enjoyed during their deviantart days, stagnating the moment they got into tumblr.

I browsed through deviantshit yesterday the first time since 2 years and it almost maked me vomit.
It was like a circlejerk of who draws the prettiest girls with the fanciest settings/accessoires/technique whatever.
The blatant placativity of those displaying their 'art' really made me sad.
It's like those people don't even consider drawing something else than pretty humans, cheered on by the blind approval of countless noobs who dream from drawing pictures as pretty as those 'artists' they admire.

girls. boys. stereotypically beautiful humans in different shapes and colours. some watercolor-looking technique here, digitally rendered style there, polishing turds everyday.
really I can't stand that shit anymore, I even think about it whilst drawing comfort zone girls.
